Ever wonder why you still have nagging low back pain even though you stretch your muscles regularly? You likely aren’t targeting the correct muscles. A hidden culprit of low back pain is tight psoas muscles. The psoas is the principal muscle associated with physical stability. It stretches from the legs to the spine and is the only muscle connecting the legs to the spinal column. The muscle flares out from the T12 vertebrae, follows down the five lumbar vertebrae, before attaching to the top of the thigh bone.
Trapped in a constant “flight or fight” state, psoas muscles are stressed and constricted, almost from the time of birth. As Dr. Gavin outlines, this situation is worsen by many things in our modern lifestyle, from sitting at a desk all day, being involved in sports or conducting various movements in the gym, further constrict our psoas. This lifelong chronic stress put on the psoas can lead to many problems like back, hip, or knee pain, and even digestive issues and dysfunctional breathing. It could also be a major cause why people suffer from chronic physical pain.
In this video we will discuss where it is located, what it does, and how we can help you to relieve your low back pain stemming from this muscle.
Thanks for watching, and make sure to contact us at Strength-N-U Therapy if you are experiencing similar low back pain!

I can attest to that, Ive been going to the doctor to find out where all my stomach pain, sore back and indigestion was coming from and it was all from anxiety and a tight psoas, because I was not breathing from my stomach over time my psoas became so tight that I started to suffer from indigestion. I've stretched it out and I am breathing properly again and all my problems have went away.

There are so many reasons for low back pain. It's not just hip flexor immobility, or hip extensor weakness. For the case of the woman in the video, it could also be hip flexor weakness or core stability. Or generally speaking sometimes it might not be muscular skeletal issue at all, but improper motor pattern (posterior/anterior tilts that are not related to hip flexor/hamstring problems).

I hurt mine while lifting my right leg to climb the window base, to be able to reach the top of the wardrobe. I felt a snap on the minor trochanter, where it was really painfull for a couple of months. Now, the pain is only on between the femur head and the right pelvis bones, where the iliacus appears to be attached.

I have spent time doing the hip flexor and psoas stretching, I've given it a whole month of doing these daily, and at about a month my back starts hurting so bad that I end up spending 3-4 days pretty much immobilized in bed. I followed the guide from artofmanilness on undoing the damage of sitting. Any thoughts on what might have happened? I have had this happen 3 different times when I continued stretching those muscles for a month so I know this is the cause. Thank you!

Does this cause pain in front thighs? Like the muscles feel like they are being tore apart? And cramp so a person can't walk?

I’ve recently noticed same for days after lose back pain started. I’m guessing that the front leg muscles are doing most of the work like walking, instead of the hamstrings. Maybe lack of hamstring strength

Stretching will NOT help a psoas in spasm. It has to be released by pressure. Find a PT that knows how to safely release the psoas muscle. I was treated for a year for a supposed tight psoas muscle and did all these stretches that did absolutely nothing (except agitate it). It wasn't until my PT was sick one day and a 2nd PT suspected i had a psoas in spasm. He dug in for about 15 mins - it was painful but good painful - and after 15 mins i stood up and 90% of the pain i had for over a year was gone. It was that dramatic of a difference.
