A Hebridean Odyssey: Part 6 - North Uist, Grimsay, Baleshare and Fraoch-Eilean

This video is the sixth in a series that documents a trip taken in May 2022, in which we visited 16 of the Hebridean islands.
This episode is a video diary of places visited, scenery seen and roads driven on the islands of North Uist, including Grimsay, Baleshare and Fraoch-Eilean in the Western Isles. North Uist is characterised by its 'drowned landscape’ of peat bogs and lochans, its flowery machair and its string of expansive beautiful beaches. Just four miles long and two miles wide (with a circular main road), Grimsay is connected to neighbouring North Uist and Benbecula by the North Ford Causeway. Baleshare is a flat tidal island and lies to the south-west of North Uist, joined by a causeway. Baleshare is only 12 metres (39 feet) above sea level and known for its long sandy beach. It has a population of 49 living in two settlements.Fraoch-Eilean is a small island, connected to Grimsay by a causeway and is only about 55 hectares in extent. Its name derives from the Gaelic for "heather island".

The Langass Lodge has expanded since I was last there when it was only a stone building. So many memories of walking on beaches and to standing stones and chambered cairns. The view from Cletreval hill across lochans to the Monach and Flannan isles was beautiful.

Langass Lodge now has an annexe containing bedrooms - but the interior of the original building looks as though it has been the same for some years. The island, as with all its neighbours in the Western Isles, is a special place. We hope to return next year. Thank you for your comments.

Wonderful! - did I see an 'A road' that is single track with passing places - if so, that's a first for me. 😎

Indeed you did. Many of the A roads in the Western Isles are single track, although the main spine road up South Uist has some 2 way stretches and most A roads on Lewis are 2 way.

Thank you for alerting me that Part 5 (South Uist) has disappeared! It seems that a piece of music I used infringed copyright and the video has been blocked. I will re-edit with different music and then repost
