A heart condition led a young man into medical bankruptcy even with health insurance

A young man is putting his life on hold after medical bills kept piling up, despite him having health insurance. As part of the continuing Bill of the Month partnership, Dr. Elisabeth Rosenthal joins "CBS This Morning" on what to learn from the case of a 31-year-old who faced big medical bills and bankruptcy.

Its not health insurance if it doesn't insure health. its a pre negotiated scam where Americans pay more than others with a greater demand in some cases and should clearly be less. You may call underinsured.

Same on people with full time benefits job, low wages & government assistance; on which insurance covers the minimum & still loose housing to pay their bills. Just becoming another homeless family, so sad we are ok with this.

Our health care system and insurance system is so broken. It is ridiculous to have insurance and you still can't afford the care you need like my husband when he needed heart surgery.

health care insurance is a rip off..i have worked in home care for the same company for 12 years full time....the insurance they off those like me in the field is drastically different than the insurance they offer those that work internal like the office... for individual in the office $40 a week for me in the field taking care of a client/patient 8hours a day..$122 a week..that is what is is going to cost me to get insurance from my employer just because i work in the field home care and not the office..

Many hospitals have financial assistance programs. We went to the emergency room during my wife's pregnancy and she was billed 2k. It was all forgiven after applying for financial assistance. Sometimes these stories jump the gun in order to have a story instead of looking at the entire story and see how things really end up at the end. The hospital even included the financial assistance application with the bill.

I'm a medical doctor in Croatia (EU) and I had to stop going to the movies also. Not because of time, but because I have no money. My pay is $1200 a month. This is because the tax is so high for people like me to pay for "free health care". So welcome to my life.
