Yep. The shitty first experience a lot of people have with Chapter 4 is an example of it. Definitely the least well designed level in nearly every regard despite being much more enjoyable when replayed. If the game had 5 chapters, the 5th would probably have been terrible. Especially considering Chapter 4 was made in place of a scrapped desert chapter people weren't interested in.

For those worried about the game being too short as Jirard mentioned, it has more free DLC coming soon with more worlds, missions and all kinds of stuff! Essentially like what Shovel Knight did, so get hyped!

The DLC is out and it's great. 2 new worlds, and a punishing death wish mode that features more challening versions of the world levels you've already played. Plus there are now hundreds of great community maps that you can play.

@@cryptowaffles9896 When each of the DLCs were released, they were available for free for a couple days for anyone who already owned the game (for example: www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/09/13/a-hat-in-time-dlc-out-now-free). However now you do have to pay for them.

It really is a shame this game doesn't get more attention, it really is a masterpiece. I always felt like it got a little overshadowed by Cuphead, which came out around the same time. It really is a shame.

So happy this game is FINALLY getting more and more awareness that it deserves. After years of anticipation, I got the day at launch, 100%'d it and then anxiously awaited for the Steam Workshop to release. The fact that the game has 100% full modding support just makes it even more replayable.

Yeah, I remember hearing about it in 2012, then how it's close to relese on 2016/2017 and around may/june 2017 somehow it turned into silence on pages that I visit. Then a big return on december. Maybe due to finnaly pathing everything and relese of a slew of mods.

I bought the soundtrack for this game and it is amazing. One of the best or the best sound I ever bought. Also it has close to 80 songs.

A Hat in Time deserves to have OVER ONE MILLION SOLD UNITS, because it is a worthy contender to contemporary video game characters in both personality and gameplay!!! A lot of people are dismissing this game for JonTron's SINGLE APPEARANCE, the game's indie game status, and the use of the Unreal Engine for its graphics. A Hat in Time focuses on world building (through its set pieces and dialogue), an integration of both light and dark humor, and intuitive platforming gameplay. Even though there are CURRENTLY only four world (More content is coming :) Yay!!!), characters like the Mafia, the C.A.W. Agents, and the Snatcher force Hat Kid to question the quirky situations, which is an extreme contrast of a lot of 3D platformer games. Hat Kid is cunning, naive, and "deceptively cute", according to KZreadr KingK. She even burned trapped souls without hesitation! The Unreal Engine is no hindrance to the environments, as lifelike shading and textures seem to be applied generously to each polygonal model. Gameplay is explained by every other review. Shout-out to anyone that actually read my rant XD

And now that the DLC is all out, it brings another layer to the world building, and I'm not sure if they added the new places to the world seen from Hat Kid's spaceship, but each location still feels just as varied and distinguished as before. Add on that they brought an entire map's worth of tough as nails challenges for those who want the extra challenge (and boy does it bring it) and leave open the opportunity for modding, making it as easy as possible, and you can tell the creators really care.

Yes, A Hat In Time is sadly a bit short. But I rectified this by playing it twice! As soon as I was done I started a new file and did it all again - something I very rarely, if ever, do. It is just that damn fun to play.

I am so happy that this game was worth the 3+ year wait. I not only pre-ordered it back in 2013, but 100% completed the game on my first playthrough. I love this game so much, and I can't wait until they finally come out with the extra worlds they promised. Edit: Yungtown voices the Snatcher? I had no idea. Amazing job, he's probably my favorite character in the game.

...debatable, the main adventure for odyssey was fantastic. The other half was kinda empty. In hat in time's case, it's kinda reversed. For me, the charm really starts in chapter 2

Worth noting that there's two more worlds in development that'll come as free DLC later on, plus the PC version of the game is fully moddable. There's already a small mountain of new hats (with fun unique powers) levels and skins to goof around with already.

I think the "Cyclone" voice line is from an unused hat in the game. In the alpha or beta, there was a mechanic character you meet called Thor and you could get his hat, and it would make you do a mid-air spin attack.

Thanks for consistently making quality content over these years!!! My favorite thing to do after work is done at 2am is eat second dinner while watching the Completionists, it's like having a friend visit who is as passionate, actually way more passionate about games than myself, and keeps me up to date on all the stuff I hardly have time to play. Thanks again Jirard, and the rest of the completionist crew!

This game is the best, especially with the Nyakuza Metro DLC and the Seal the Deal DLC, I love it so much, and I'm extremely glad it's getting the attention it deserves.

SolarWind DLC 1 will be released this year. That's all we know at the moment. As far as I know, it'll include the sixth chapter, couch co-op and NewGame+ (the hard mode).

It’s pretty rough on switch, sadly. They had to massively downsize the visuals and it’s got constant frame rate issues. Still a blast to play, but playing on the Switch just isn’t the best way to experience it. I prefer playing on the PC with a Pro Controller.

Really underrated game

i'm so glad that this game is starting to get more recognition

A Hat in Time is the first game in a long time that I had an active drive to 100%. Before going to the final battle, I collected every Time Piece and Steam achievement I could. Not because I was forcing myself to, but because I truly wanted to. I wanted to see everything this game had to offer, and I'm more than glad that I did. It was an experience unlike any other that I'd had in a long time, a 13-hour playthrough of pure gaming bliss, and I couldn't have been happier with my choice to play this insanely charming platformer masterpiece. A Hat in Time deserves its spot as not only my Game of the Year for 2017, but as one of my favourite games of all time, possibly even number one.

At 8:00 when the music kicks in, I felt a sudden wave of warmth come over me. I had never heard it before in my life but the sound just made me feel nice and nostalgic and I kinda cried a little bit. I'll definetely be getting the game now, if only just to feel that again.

Just like to say that I'm around 90% sure my PC has worse specs than yours and I experienced 0 frame drops during my playthrough. So results may vary.

I remember being so excited when this came out back in high school. I didn't have the system to play it but I had a lot of fun watching others play on KZread. I eventually got it as a Christmas present for the switch and let's just say it's just as amazing to play as it is to watch. :3

I'm fairly young, still a teen, and A Hat in Time is probably one of the first 3D Collect-a-thon platformers I've played and it INSTANTLY won a place in my heart last year when I got it. On the first day of getting it I sat on the title screen for a few minutes, listening to the music, and booting up a save file felt so good. This game plays out like a Saturday morning cartoon and I LOVE IT.

I recommend Banjo Kazooie, Spyro the Dragon, and Jak and Daxter the prescursor legacy if you love collectathon platformers.

Is it just me, i get so hyped when i see his intro, its just too good!

When I finally finished this game, I actually sat through the *entire* credits scene. Also this game feels a lot like a game for the 3DS, Fantasy Life.

Hey, I'm a rando, and I dug your review. I'm 'in the industry' and I really dug your energy and devotion to this review. I found this game on a whim, as a slightly 'older gent', and it felt very nostalgic. And your review (although you are clearly younger than me by a decade at least), felt like I was your buddy. Someone put up every title card from A Hat in Time there. 8:20 In other words, that’s Grant Kirkhope. 13:45 Something I guess Jirard didn’t pick up on, but if you die in a fight, yes you start at the beginning, but each phase of the fight is shortened to get you back to the part of the fight in which you died. Also for those wondering about the achievement you get by fighting a boss with the one-hit badge, no, the Barrel throwing Mafia does not count as a boss despite having the boss icon (believe the Toilet of Doom does though). 14:04 She doesn’t say anything...but she does write things down, and what she writes can kinda change the way one sees certain events through her perspective. She may act adorable, but boy does she have smarminess to spare.

Lots of respect for the mafia guy in the intro. Not only he managed to get to a spaceship in what's probably sideral space without a vehicle or a space suit, but he also managed to speak in the void and punch through a glass which being that large, i can only assume it's a particular glass capable of resisting hits from space junk and small meteorites.

@@eggwizard25 Yeah the unused model of adult hat kid was going to be a secret true ending to the game if you collected every Time Piece. In fact, there's a theory that the story was going to be that she got caught up in a book and dreamt the entire story.

Hat kid is one of the best characters I’ve seen in a game for a while

This game has some of the best boss fights I’ve ever played. There’s a sense sometimes with Mario fights where you are walking around waiting for the boss to do something, where there’s just nothing happening for a few seconds and you’re waiting for the boss to catch up to you. A Hat In Time’s bosses usually feel more like they are one step ahead, like you’re scrambling to keep up with them. I absolutely adore this game.

This is the first time I've watched your stuff and when I saw you without a beard I was like "oh nooo" and then when you powered up with it I was like "much better".

Celestial Gecko He should. I'm not that skilled in platformers, but it's harder than Mario. I mainly play Rhythm Games, but those would take forever to complete and to perfect, especially the Project Diva line of games

It wasn't that hard, and even in the hard sections it was a pain due to the jank platforming. The figments were the only annoying part, and even they weren't THAT bad.

I already explained I don't really play platforming games. Going from rhythm to platforming is different. I still had fun with it, but the camera could have been better

Harder than Mario? What? Psychonauts doesn't even facture in difficulty. It's more of an experience than a challenge... How the hell do you think it's harder thna Mario? Mario games get really demanding.

13:10 There actually are enough rift tokens to get all the flairs and dyes. You’ll just have to grind for relics but they’re are so many possible places to find them. Relics turn into rift tokens once you collect all the relics

i don't think you understood it. even after getting all tokens you still don't get everything unless you buy the dlc

I'd love to see an updated video with the DLCs.

For all the good things that can be said for A Hat in Time, it is a shame that alot of people decided to say "F*** this game!" just because of a 30-second scene... The scene isn't anything special, but because it has JonTron, this was the "Worst Game Of 2017!!!"

"one of"? I'm pretty sure, it's the best. Way better than that stupid Metroid: SR, that doesn't know, if it wants to be a remake or a new title.

This game was just absolutely amazing. The game never felt boring to me at anytime because I was so interested in the different worlds you can explore. All the little things you could find made the game very interesting along with the amazing movement encouraging you to put your platforming skills to work. The world design is beautiful making it super fun to explore them with all these abilities. This is easily now one of my favorite platformers.

I can't wait to see your thoughts on both DLCs

I’m proud of how much 3D platformers evolved.

Watching you and SomecallmeJohnny review this makes me want to play this game. :O! Looks like a lot of fun.

I've been waiting for this one for forever!!!

It's on sale right now on STEAM for a little less than $20, and will be for the next 37 hours or so. I bought a copy for me, and one for my younger brother for an early birthday gift. We grew up with Banjo-Kazooie, Mario 64, and onwards. Looking forward to sinking a few hours into it at least. If it's as fun as it looks, it'll be worth that. If nothing else the main character is adorable.

Autism in Space I wouldn't, unfortunately they haven't aged well... it got a lot of potential, nothing that's actually worth playing, maybe play the third if your curious, but otherwise I'd leave em alone.

I for one absolutely loved everything about this game, the level design, the unique challenges, the controlls and the amazing music. This is on my top 3 for 3d platformers all time!

When he showed the soundtrack it sonded like it had some Crock inspiration.

I'm so glad that you finally covered such an amazing game. By giving it the coverage that it deserves, you are helping so save the indie industry.

Finally got to play this game too. It's so cute and it's so much fun.

I was honestly really surprised when I got all the time pieces and found out there was a reward for it! In the other games I’ve completed, there usually is nothing that signifies that you’ve put in the time and effort to find and do everything. Sure, medals on the safe files are cool, but I’ve never been rewarded in-game before for going above and beyond the finish line. I really love the simple little addition of the completionst hat, and it is now my new default tophat. (I pair it with the color option called Captain of the Sea because it looks really really good)

Something that I find good to mention is that A Hat in Time will be getting two more chapters later on as free DLC including the splitscreen/cooperative modes. The Steam Workshop support is in beta, but it's already put out some great content and levels to play with.

Hey Jirard how about you complete Epic Mickey? It’s a really great open world platform we with a great story and tons of collectibles.

You know, I'm very confused as to why I never subscribed to you. I only buy games I know I'll want to complete, so why wouldn't I want to see a collection of videos telling me the level of fun and difficulty each game has? That's totally up my alley! You, sir, have earned another subscriber! Also, A Hat in Time was an adorable, hilarious, heartwarming, fun-as-heck game! I'm glad you loved it. I'm upset JonTron wasn't removed though. That's basically my only gripe.

A while ago, two of my Steam friends told me to get this game, and so I bought the Ultimate Edition for 62% off, which included all of the DLC, and boy, am I glad I did. The game has a lot of charm. It took me a while to get used to the controls, but when I did, everything I could do, whether it be being able to switch hats on a dime, being able to go faster than if I had the Sprint Cap without using the Sprint Cap, was very satisfying. Sometimes I spend minutes on end just diving around in the Spaceship, listening to the music, and I would even play with my friends because of the Online Party function that comes with the Nyakuza Metro DLC. The only thing I would add to the Online Party system would be a chat feature, which means we have to use Steam chat.
