A-ha's "Take On Me" gets a swinging tribute courtesy of Lake Street Dive

There are few songs more quintessentially ’80s than Norwegian band A-ha’s “Take On Me.” It’s a synth-heavy power ballad accompanied by a high-concept music video, checking all the boxes that defined the pop music of the decade. When choosing the song for their cover, Brooklyn-based band Lake Street Dive ditched the decidedly ’80s feel of the song, infusing the song with a funky latin groove, elements of blue-eyed soul, and a fantastic trumpet solo. The result is one of our favorite covers of the season.

When it comes to covers, my usual attitude is "Be original or be quiet". But I'll make an exception for this. This is a BRILLIANT rendition of A-ha's "Take On Me". Excellent work that actually gave me goosebumps! Thank you, Lake Street Dive. And thank you, The A.V. Club, for sharing it with us.

I just love how you can see the way the musicians assemble the piece with just straight up musicality and no ‘funny business’... no weird electronic tricks, no samples, not a laptop in sight. I can't even remember how the rabbit trail lead me to this performance, but I have listened to it about 10 times over the last couple of weeks, and binged on everything else they have up here on youtube. I think your roots with the NEC is a reason this song and others come off so well. I've narrowed it down to this impression I get; in all your songs, each of you gets a kick out of every single note - having fun the whole way thru. Very upbeat... Hope to see you live sometime, soon.

I'm not going to read all 1032 comments to check on this, but I did read down a fair bit. I'm surprised that supposed lifetime brass players haven't commented that his (what I think I hear as) triple tongueing is freaking amazing. I remember after 4 years of lessons trying to imitate Al Hirt's tongueing and never even got close. That takes an amazing amount of practice and ability and should be recognized for what it is - total mastery of the instrument. Anything you hear that might sound off one way or the other is, I'm very convinced, intentional. For myself, I hear mariachi - intentional and clear. Also, I'm sorry that so many people want to rain on this band's parade. This is the first time I've ever heard or seen them and it's obvious to me they are totally enthusiastic about what they do and just simply enjoy themselves. I know what that's like - I did sound for a reggae band (8-10 members at times) and we did it not for any kind of money but because we loved it. You just can't buy that.

YEP.... Just to hit those high notes takes years of daily practice to get your lip up there and then to sustain it! Add in the extensive triple tonguing- he's not sliding into the notes, each one is separate! He's playing this style on purpose... bet he can play anything. I was entertained by the whole arrangement- they were having fun and it becomes contagious.

You have different requirements for music, I understand. For this reminds me of when we were 12 years old and were going to start up with bands. Recordings say it sounded cruel. This band plays so amateurishly that it cuts to the ears. Especially the trumpeter. He sounds like he got his instrument a few weeks ago. He plays staccato where there should be mykw tones, he turns the tones when he gets tired in the lip. And he should learn to play before posting a video.

  • @Scott_works

@@runerebnordantonsen3202 There is a certain "garage band" thing that is going on in this particular recording. If you look into their music, they are all well schooled, and one of the things that makes them so original sounding is their home grown approach, in my opinion. Rachel has been singing since she was young, and was a powerhouse when she was still a child. Her voice carries the band, and the rest of them are a part of it. They've been together some time now. After seeing them on Steven Colbert's show the other night, it seems to be working. They have some great new songs that are well produced and they are becoming pretty popular. Rachel's deep, melodic, wide ranging voice, reminiscent of the Memphis, New Orleans and Austin bar scenes is perfectly fit into this pop-esque and even campy at times juxtaposition that makes for an interesting mix. Yes, the trumpet was a little over the top on that song, but It didn't hurt that bad... :)

@@Scott_works, Of course, you should support them when you enjoy listening to them. The vocalist is probably the best of them, but will probably never compete with voices such as Shania Twain, Madonna or others in the pop category. Compared to the band a-ha, they were at the top of lists around the world with this song, and unfortunately they are not a millimeter close to lifting the song as the original version is. I can imagine that they can be successful at local parties, Christmas parties and other events where the audience does not make such great demands other than that there is music there. And if you are also familiar with them, I understand that you want to defend them. But in this case, they destroy a big hit completely

I am absolutely in love with this performance. The best cover of the song I've ever heard. Such a unique rendition and performed with such life and spirit. It sounds so human and organic I cannot express how much I love this cover. The trumpet player is an absolute monster and deserves props for the fact that his chops actually held in there for the whole song VERY impressive. And that solo oh my god. You have to remember that the solo was perfomaned on a synth keyboard where all your notes are laid out in front of you. He did the solo with three valves and his lips. Which is really quite a feat how well he played it. Absolutely amazing with such a great feel for the song. The keyboard player added such a soft touch to the song and added that harmony that the song defiantly needed. The drummer adds such a unique flavor and vibe to the performance with the off-beats and tom interludes. I also loved how he played with the time just enough to really propel and hold the song back when he needed to. That being a skill most drummers lack. The bassist I absolutely adore. Upright is incredibly difficult alone when playing in an orchestra but to be able to play so accurately on a FRETLESS interment that her head doesn't even reach the scroll on is VERY impressive. And lastly on the singer. I love her voice so much. So remonstrant of the classic jazz singers of the 30s and 40s. She sounded so confident and so in control. The song was truly felt and not just sang heartlessly. And even with all of this going on everyone still managed to pull off HARMONIZED backing vocals on top of it all. The performance is not sterile and every note is not perfectly in tune. But no real live performance will ever be. This song was performed by humans and it shines through so clearly. The song is so organic and raw and I just cannot get enough of it because so few bands are willing to put themselves out there like this. An absolutely tremendous performance by an already fantastic band.

As much as I do enjoy this preformance, Cap'n Jazz is the best band to do it IMO. While here we have contained energy and a really tight and beatiful preformance, Cap'n Jazz does it completely different. The energy is fast, exciting, and generally more fun. I'd take fun over beauty. This version Im more likely to play when family is around. Just my thoughts.

The synth solo in the bridge should really have been handed over to the keys. The trumpet playing is skillful, but its loud strident tone fails to convey the light-hearted sense of magic in the original track. I often find Mike Olson's trumpet and distorted guitar tones harsh and overbearing in the mix. He's a talented musician, but I prefer a sideman to blend in rather than stand out.

Interpretation type of horror. I have played the trumpet for 25 years, and had students in training for 15 years. If the trumpeter here has paid an instructor to learn an instrument, I would recommend that he demand the money back. He "turns" tones. Blows at full strength probably to cover incompetence. He tries some skills where he misses most of the notes. No self-respecting musician will humble himself as it does here. 😁

Peter Moeykens, I wouldn't describe them all as "super talented," but point taken on the straight shooter approach. It's refreshing to hear them actually play. There's bands w technical ability through the roof, but the essence of the song can be lost in the delivery. This was executed to imperfect perfection. As you said, there's some clunkers, but the highs easily outweigh the lows. Plus, she's sexy as fuck.

The ragged trumpet is what makes this really great. That guy is really good, an obvious pro. His cracks, creeks, slides are intentional. People didn't understand Monet's painting either: "It doesn't look clean, or perfect!" Exactly. That's what the trumpet is doing here. I really like the whole groove from the rest of the band too but the trumpet is the icing.

To me, this band not only killed it on this cover, they reinvented the whole song while honoring every lyric. Maybe the original video (one of the most memorable and watchable videos of the roaring '80's imho) was so "high concept" that the true meaning of this love song was lost on me: but LSD has made this one of the most poignant love songs I have ever heard in my 58 years on this planet. Her expressions/singing are captivating and her announcing "I'll be coming for your love o k" just knocks me over. Then to create the exact opposite type of video from the hi tech original, this being basically a garage band setting, and craft these beautiful harmonies and unusual instruments into an epic cover and then smash it out of the ballpark is remarkable. A raucous trumpet solo to an A-Ha song ? I hope I can catch them live, I see they are coming nearby this summer. And yeah, the singer is a babe.......
