A Guide to Scupper Plugs

Спорт

Learn how to drain water from your kayak with a closer look at the scupper plug function: scupper holes and scupper plugs - what they do and what they're for.
In this demonstration from Brooklyn Kayak Company, we've filled up a BKC kayak with water. If left unattended in the rain, it would probably sink due to water build-up.
As soon as you remove one of the scupper plugs, the water will immediately start to drain out. And as the water drains out, you'll even see the kayak rising in the water.
Scupper functions:
- easily drains water from the inside of the kayak
- if in rough conditions, and you're below the suggested weight capacity, you should ride with the scuppers out
- if it's a calm day/ride, and you'd like to stay dry, no problem to keep the scuppers in - it builds up additional weight capacity
- there are scuppers throughout the kayak for ample drainage
- if you leave your kayak in the water, remove the scuppers to help drain any standing rain water inside the kayak

"If left unattended in the rain, it would probably sink" This is INCORRECT. The kayak itself is sealed (unless you leave the cargo hatch open) it cannot sink unless the inner chamber fills with water. Also,as you can see in the video the kayak was already nearly as full of water as it could be for when it gets much higher it would drain through the hole for pedal system insert. Respectfully, it's a bit concerning that a "Founder and Product Specialist" in the company doesn't understand basic functionality of the products being sold.

Sorry if a dumb question but how do you get the water out? Just turning it upside down and angling it to drain? Only reason that seems off to me is because my new 50 lb kayak is heavy and that seems harder that it is on paper.

Hey Stephen, it actually depends on where the build up of water is. Either drain plugs or scupper plugs can help keep the water out so there isn't that much to drain. But if you mean the water that might naturally come in when paddling, you can contact us and one of our Product Specialists can assist. You can live chat us, email or call us and ask for our Product Specialists help for an issue like this. :)

Just pull one of the plugs! The kayak itself won't sink because it's full of air. I use the plugs to keep water from splashing up but you can leave them out

Okay, I tried out my kayak and it was amazing. So you can use it without these plugs. Anyway I use an islander calypso beach kayak, and it is pretty stable.

Yes but there is nothing in the kayak. I weight under 220 and as soon as I get into my PK12 the water comes to the top of the scuppers and in motion there is water on the floor. I have to leave the 2 plugs behind the seat out so the kayak doesn't fill with water while using the front scuppers. I have no clue where the max weight of 460 pounds came from unless that's the sinking weight.

have the same issue with another kayak from bkc. The water comes above the hatch and water eventually gets into the inner chamber making it impossible to get on the water with the scuppers out.

The scupper holes will only let in a limited amount of water, due to the overall buoyancy of the kayak, but will allow any buildup of water inside the kayak to drain out. The only time you'd want to plug them is for cooler weather kayaking on flat water trips.
