I've heard the name of the program tossed around but I've never looked into it. After seeing how the program works and the card scanner (providing a much better solution to the thing I hated most about skype duels) has made me much more likely to check out the program. And yes....I said skype duels, I'm a geezer so what. I'll register with my aol or yahoo email too!

As someone who's been playing a lot of commander over Discord, brawl on Arena, and recently was dragged kicking and screaming into the microtransaction hell that is MTGO, this is exactly the sort of thing I wanted to see more of. I tested the card scanner feature for myself just now too, and was surprised at how effective it seems to be. Wizards acquiring it admittedly gives me mixed feelings, seeing as how it's currently free... but I'd also like to see the app expanded a bit in useful ways. For instance, at the moment it tracks commander damage but not commander tax. Great video choice either way, made me click to see it very quickly indeed! (I particularly like that you take the time to get into security concerns too) You rock, Prof!

I've been playing magic commander and pauper using Cockatrice open source software. Is really amazing, it has all cards of magic available, 100% free, you can hover your mouse during the game over a card to see it on your screen. It takes a few hours to get used to the software but to be honest once you get used to it is the perfect place to play casual and competitive level games and is also the place I use to test new deck ideas and upgrades to my current paper decks, there is a chat box as well. I usually go on a audio call with a group or with friends to play it and the game is just amazing.

a few more tips/ workarounds I have found, and want to share. Sometimes Spelltable has issues with all 4 players getting each other's cams, resulting in a lot of reloading. another option is, if at least one person has all 4 cams, and you have access to a discord, have that person go live, and everyone who doesn't have a cam of the stream can watch that one, only switching back to adjust life totals and such. it also gives the chance for other people to watch your games. As prof said, lots of content creators have there own place for playing web games. I'm a member of the Spike Feeders discord and am always down to jam a game of any power level. (contrary to popular belief, its not all CEDH there)

Tip for lighting: avoid overhead lights. I have ceiling lights and mounted my phone with a bendy phone arm thing (pretty cheap, also recommended), but the bright lighting above both blows out the sleeves with glare _and_ makes a big shadow. Instead, find other lights and angle them so they shine from a different direction than the camera. I have a desk lamp set up at a 45 degree angle or so, and flicking that on and turning _off_ the ceiling lights provides a near perfect lighting conditions for the camera.

you can use de-foiled cards as reusable tokens with dry-erase marker. foil can be peeled off from card or solvent can be used to remove the print leaving shiny background (acetone works on contemporary foils but be careful as it is toxic and flammable). you can even just put piece of paper in a sleeve and draw/write on the sleeve, that works too. remember to have a piece of cloth to clean up the tokens afterwards and glhf :)

I don't get to play as much as I would like, but it has made finding games so easy going into discord and finding a match on PlayEDH and using Spelltable. The fact that they deck check means I have had so many more evenly matched games than just randos at the LGS.

Before WOTC, you could see the prices of cards and where to buy them. After WOTC, you can't do that any more :(

@@charanth182 I don't think the secondary market is really profitable for WOTC. I'm definitely not a market expert or anything, but packs full of garbage commons and nearly unplayable uncommons seem like it'd be way more profitable than selling people the cards they actually want. Lootboxes exist for a reason.

I'm really enjoying Spelltable, fantastic application. A couple notes from my experience so far (take them or leave them): 1. Cell phone video quality is generally very poor, I tried with an iPhone X, maybe newer ones are better 2. The card reading feature of Spelltable has a much much easier time reading the cards if the camera is directly overhead, it can't reliably read cards at an angle

I played with some of my buddies and just used two wires hanging from our dining room light fixture. I just sat my phone down on the wires and it worked great. Told my wife I was just guna leave them hanging there cause I'll need it again. it was simple and if I needed to, its an easy takedown and set up.

It's taken me this long to get into webcam magic and I think it is going to be my main go-to for a while. Between work, living in the boonies and the price of gas, it's so much more convenient for me to get a came together online than drive 45mins+ to play in person. My rig is jank as hell but it works. 😸

My first attempt at playing webcam magic was with a playmat set on the inside of a cardboard box that was laid on its side with a small hole cut in it for my phone camera to see through which was set on top of the box. It actually worked fairly well.

Nice, I was wondering if there was some sort of scanner-feature included. That makes it really interesting imo. Imagine, as technology improves, it might be possible to play with an overlay, that replaces everything with hq graphics and adds some animations or something. I'm curious what future will bring here. Because I feel like a paper magic online multiplayer is what might bring many people together, that are now only playing locally or that are having trouble to find other players. It could maybe revive paper magic.

My local shop has 'mander night once a week, and if I'm working, I miss out. So spelltable is pretty nice even after face-to-face play has become a thing. Also useful if you're like me if you spend a lot of time on a deck and you want other people to see it, regardless of whether or not you win 😌

I finally gave this a whirl last night. I think it is *almost* as easy as most of the videos I've seen make it out to be, but I do suggest playing with it yourself first (trying different spaces and camera angles and lighting) and, if necessary, buy whatever tech you think you need to make it optimal. I had a webcam on top of a monitor on top of 5 roleplaying books and could still only see ~70% of my playmat, which was fine for that one session, but I'd like it to display my full play area moving forward. (Also, my webcam and/or lighting sucked, because none of my cards were searchable by their on-screen image. But my friend's were, and that is a pretty kick-ass feature.) All-in-all, yeah, this is a very cool and very easy way to play, but I think it does need a little pre-work to ensure the best play experience.

It's been great to be able to play throughout lock down. Sometimes it's frustrating when someone has potato quality video or sound. I play in mid and find it funny that mana crypt is more or less banned, but people play it anyways. Nothing beats blowing someone out with settle the wreckage.
