A guide to currency collecting

I tried to put together a guide showing the types of notes to look for when searching currency. Remember to collect what YOU like. Just keep in mind that cool doesn’t mean valuable.

    I keep what I like and do exactly what you said...if I see something coin related that I want, I use my disposable bills to buy it. It's a kind of rainy day account. I've been collecting for years, but I needed a reminder. Great video!

    Ive always collected bills that are old and never thought about errors, star notes, web notes or serial numbers until I started watching some videos......long story short, I pulled out my bills and the first dollar bill I looked at, had a star on it! That was so cool and now I know what to look for besides the dates on them! Thanks so much for the videos! 😃

    I always had the tellers at my bank to be on the lookout for any unusual bills and coins. Well this one teller was very amicable and always kept a lookout for me. He always had something that I would like. Well one day he called me up and said that he had some interesting $2 I would definitely like. When I got there we made an exchange and the serial numbers were all in sequential order and the numbers ran like this 01012012 to 01012016 , so I had 5 bills with the new years date on them. But that wasn’t the best part. The series was 2013 A . So I had the 01012013 A . Now that note is definitely worth more than the $2 bill. That bank had the best tellers that I’ve ever had. They always called me when they had something and like a good puppy I ran out to them as soon as I could.

    Good stuff! But...... you know I’m going to give ya a hard time on a couple of these. First off let me say you’re totally correct on a ton of misinformation about fancies. There’s been so many newer terms created that essentially are nothing for something. I consider myself a strict fancy serial number collector and thus don’t accept “trinaries” “bookends” five of a kind (unless obviously they are leading or trailing 0’s) etc. Even six of a kind I’m hesitant on to say ya ok I’ll keep that. Basically my marker is 7 of a kind or better for those. I also don’t agree that Barr notes are more than face (unless UNC and starred) like yours. There were millions of these printed and everyone kept them because they thought they’d become valuable later on due to his short time in office. Anyhow, just my opinions. Love that 60006000 and 7 in a row 1’s. Good stuff. Hopefully this helps to clear up some confusion with people. I see it EVERYDAY on my Facebook fancy page people thinking they have something but all they have is a spender. Be well bud

    I expect nothing but the best intentions from you and you know how I value your opinion. I just cringe so hard when I see people saving things that they can't even give an explanation for! I did my best to not associate a dollar value or any actual value for most of the notes. I think this is a good illustration of what these notes are especially in comparison to what some sites say. I was thinking of doing a list like you did showing the odds of each note. That would be extremely helpful. But, at the very least, this allows people to see exactly what can be found, what can be cool, and what (possibly) could be worth more than face. I pretty much put book ends in just to get a rise out of you! Take care bro!

    Very very interesting video. Learnt a lot. Thank you. Do you also collect higher denomination notes with fancy/unique serial numbers? Same for foreign banknotes? I enjoy your videos because long ago I was bitten by the serial number bug, and can't let go of ANY note without glancing at the number. Also, I found your channel very recently and have been going through your past videos, hopefully diligently. Thanks once again.

  • @Stuplubakcurrency

    Thank you very much! I also check the number on every note that crosses my fingers. I do have a handful of larger denomination notes. They are mostly rare stars or binaries. I try to be very selective with them because they add up fast. I don't know if it's a good thing or not but because I search singles, when I return them I tend to get $100s. So I have quite a few of those put away. As far as foreign notes, I don't know much about them but I would assume there would be the same interest if the combinations were equally as rare. I'm glad you find my videos helpful! I will do my best to answer any questions so please feel free to ask!

    Very interesting collection! Couple curious questions: did they only print web notes in $1 denomination? And is the 'I' star note rare because they dont print as much from that reserve?

  • @Stuplubakcurrency

    @Stuplubakcurrency

    2 жыл бұрын

    Web notes were an experiment by the reserve and were only issued in $1 denominations. I've been told that the reason it ended was because they couldn't find parts for the press when it broke down. As for the "I" stars... Prior to this current series, they weren't printed since 1995. And prior to that, you have to go back to 1969! Some people like to collect stars from each reserve. That makes "I" Minneapolis notes that much harder to find. I'm not even sure if there is a premium on them, but there should be!

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's great as long as you think they are cool. The 2013's could be incredible! Good luck with those. Check them on the list. Just an FYI. A note like 42669842 could be considered a 99% note because it's book ends. It starts with 42 and there are 100 combinations that it could end with, only 1 being 42 as well. Thus being a note that is clearly in the top 1% of rarity and still has no additional value. Radars and repeaters are 99.99% . A solid is 99.99999%.

    Thanks Stu it’s what is needed in the hobby. I really enjoy new and young collectors and see how they are doing. Yeah there is a lot of things to be wary of from places like eBay and Etsy to name a couple and I feel if i can add some sense to it all then I do my part. However one collects is up to them and whatever they enjoy. I can’t tell you how many times I was called silly or foolish and poo pooed on some things I gathered and collected yes I have a lot of stuff some very valuable some memorable and I enjoy it all. I’m not really capable to put on a video myself and I certainly enjoy ones that do sensibly like yours also Kyle at Variety and Errors Keep the good work I’ll chime in when I can

    Coin collecting in it's-self is the VALUE to the collector... For example Prime Numbers is exciting to me as a collector because I'm intrigued by Sum- total of all things numbers.. that my VERY COOL Factor to the numismatic perspective. I, enjoy Trinary note equally to binaries and solids and radars, ticker numbers and errors alike. Your collection,should reflect YOU! While admiring other collector's. I've counted a thousand a week and hadn't seen a number like this sequence...you can have a low sequence summing 6 but 6 can be 00000123 four different numbers... It can also be 1111111....51000000, 33000000 or 600000000 all depends on how you want to see your collection.

    I state from the start that you should collect what you like. No one can tell you what you should like. I fully support anyone in that regard. But that doesn’t mean it’s rare or valuable. I see many people spending hours typing random numbers hoping the coolness index will say something just so they can turn around and try to sell it. These people have no interest in the hobby. They only care about the number so they can try to make a buck.

    HI!! i loved watching this video and it was really cool and interesting. i found a star note with the plate number 3. sense it's a low plate number do you think it's worth a lot (letter L)

    Plate number doesn't matter as much as the serial number. You want to see a bunch of zeroes to start. That's worth a lot more than plate number.

    @@Stuplubakcurrency I’ve been trying for some several years now, but it’s more worthwhile to collect coin rolls and ultimately I’ve had better luck finding recentish notes from circulation that have worth to them for any of the reasons described in your video. The most notable $1 bills in my current collection is a miscut 2013B star note and a 2009 which serial number is a perfect trinary ladder (00011122).

    Um… no. You can keep anything you like. It’s simply a matter of whether or not anyone else will pay above face value. I have lots of notes I think are cool but I know aren’t worth anything. I would just hate for you to bring 500 notes that are “ all odd” or “sum to 14” or “ have a run of 4” to a coin shop and get laughed out of the place. Kind of like I did when I brought a bunch of 1940’s and 1950’s common date nickels to my LCS. He looked for silver, a few dates, and said “ these are all spenders. Take them to a coin star”. Yet, every single coin roll hunting channel saves them. In my collection, I keep what I think is cool. This video shows what you can actually sell for a profit. The birthday note example I use should have made it clear. Or did you not watch that far?

    A question for you: my dad handed to me a $20 from 1950. It is a star note with serial K00130131. How would you go about determining the value of a note like this? (Neat having a Dallas note and living in Dallas)

  • @Stuplubakcurrency

    @Stuplubakcurrency

    2 жыл бұрын

    Cool note. The site that I look up stars doesn’t go back that far. But “Paper Money of the United States “ does! Great book! The serial is a trinary but that probably doesn’t increase the value. It just makes it more likely that your note will sell first. Also remember that condition is huge. If it’s a 1950 (and not a 1950 A or B or C) there were only about 22 million total notes printed for Dallas and that includes stars. If your note is about a VF20, it runs about $90. As a Ch63, you are talking $350!
