    As a former student at the Paris Conservatory with the Master, Marcel Mule, (1958-1961, same time as Eugene Rousseau), I would only like to specify one thing. The recordings played by Marcel Mule which are published on KZread, give only a very approximate idea from how his sound really was. These are recordings made more a 60 years ago, with poor equipment and afterwards passed trough filters in order to clean the noise out. During the lessons (always class lessons) he played all the time for us. He never did bring a horn, but take one from a student and it was not always a Selmer. His timbre was simply incredible, also the vibrato does not sound exactly at it did in real. Even his best students felt very small playing after him. I am in the process of recording a video, which will be published on my new website, in about one month’s, where I will speak about my experience with this great virtuoso and teacher. I think only survivors as Jean-Marie Londeix, Fred Hemke, Eugène Rousseau and myself can give the real dimension of Marcel Mule as a saxophonist and creator of playing this instrument in classical as well as in jazz style. Marcel Mule and Sigurd Rascher were the fathers of modern saxophone playing they were both great players and made enormous contribution, but Marcel Mule had a natural talent, which has never been reached by any player until today. Yes! I don't think that he did improvise, but in his younger years he did play in dance band, as a studio musician and especially for movies , where there was often very jazz oriented music. Look at the interview with Harvey Pittel on KZread and read the book written by Eugène Rousseau. Also he told me this personally. I did had not only a connection with Master Mule while being his student , but for more as 30 years after my studies, when he was retired. This during long telephone conversations.

    Mule sounds like this because he was a violin player, and all the techniques he knew on the violin, he aplied in saxophone, and the vibrato style is the most obvious one! Great and unique Marcel Mule... father of us all, classical and jazz players! RIP

    He started playing the violin at the same time as the saxophone. Vibrato was common in jazz at the time and when someone heard his jazz vibrato he was told to apply it to classical.

    His technique is absolute perfection. But beyond that I find his performance quite dull. Playing each tone of each phrase with exactly the same speed and width of vibrato gives the music very little character and creates very little melodic motion. I’ve heard several recordings of Mr Rascher playing the piece with orchestra and the variety of colors and the way he creates a line and brings the music to life is vastly superior.

    I don't think people know the history of vibrato and Marcel Mule's great contribution to it when they hate on Mr. Mule's vibrato. If it wasn't for Mr. Mule we would not have the modern vibrate we all know and love. Mr. Mule transformed what we think of as a more extreme version of the billy may style into what you hear him play. Yeah it may sound a bit fast, but he created the modern sound and cheers to him. In my mind, he;s still the greatest sax player to have ever lived.

    I was just reading your comment, a funny thing came to my mind that I just wanted to share. Mr. Rousseau was telling me a story about how Rascher called up Mule and told him he could play 4 octaves on the saxophone. Mule, later when asked if the statement was true, said ,"he did play 4 octaves." not stating whether it was good or bad. Mr. R then went on to say how humble of a man Mule was haha.

    If there was ever a piece on which Mule’s vibrato was warranted, this is it. Glazunov was a late romantic. A Russian trained romantic. He ran the conservatory in Moscow, I believe. He was fascinated with this saxophone sound, which he had encountered while living in Paris in his last years. He wrote this for Mule. What brings this work to life is to perform it the way Hiefetz would. I don’t know if Mule succeeded on that level or not, but the vibrato was appropriate, at least. Few saxophonists really ever come close to playing this piece perfectly for the romantic style. Mule gets it about as close as you will hear it, though I think this performance wasn’t probably his best. The pianist sounds like he/she is playing it for the first time. Gets separated a lot.

    This concerto was written for (dedicated) to Sigurd Rascher. If you were to look at the original manuscript of the work this states this right underneath the title. Mule did perform this work many times (and impressively as well), but the piece was not written for him.

    That's funny you should mention music teachers hating on vibrato. Somehow, somewhere along the line, it became bete noire. I recently had a lesson with David Henderson and was pleased to hear him singing the praises of vibrato and urging us students to stop neglecting this great tool. Have you seen the Itzhak Perlman vid here in YT, the one where he describes and praises the various types of vibrato. What he's saying about violin applies to reed instruments too. Check it out.

    Vibrato is pretty much a given on saxophone. What people are criticizing, I believe, is the rate of pulsation, which is quite fast. Mule speaks at length in an interview of how he arrived at this particular rate, which was for him the "sweet spot" which pleased the audience more than other rates that he had played. Tastes can certainly change, but I adore Mule's playing.

    Well, hearing the vibrato on the recording vs. live? Ha, no way the recording caught all that the way it sounded live. I just find the more and more I play his exercises there are some really great little etudes. I love other music that most classical musicians frown upon but when I hear the great saxophone players play these incredible melodies I just can't understand why the whole jazz/classical debate and even beyond that how classical musicians look down on the sax as a bastard instrument.

    Lots of strange phrasing for my taste in this piano version. Sounds like it came from an old tape recording with occasional future artifacts being heard in the background. Piano sounded strange, so that makes me question how the sax really sounded. Mule's contribution to the advancement of the saxophone is historic. I truly appreciate postings of the old masters. It's great that others can hear the sound of this French Conservatoire professor. Only wish more recordings of his were available.

    @AveryViper Nah, not blasphemy. He definitely pioneered the use of vibrato on the instrument. His goal was to imitate the vibrato of string players and vocalists. Also, about altissimo, he wasn't as concerned about the extended range as Rascher was. Mule concerned himself more with the melodic capabilities of the instrument instead. However, I'm not a fan of Mule's interpretations.

    Mule's sound works on pieces that properly showcase his style (Pierne's Canzonetta, Concertino da Camera, etc.); that's not the case here. The vibrato is more distracting than enhancing.

    Oftentimes, during this era, recordings were sped up, because the faster vibrato was considered more impressive, as well as the sped up technicality. Thus, the out of tune piano (which sounds sharp because it's sped up), and the faster vibrato (while the sax also sounds a little sharp as well)

  • @dogknees9903

    @dogknees9903

    Ben Dottinger I highly doubt this is because it’s sped up. It’s much more likely that back when this recording was done, the level at which they tune would have been different. Back in the baroque period they were at 413Hz or something really quite low compared to modern standards. Today it’s around 440 - 442hz depending on where you are. I’d assume back then it would have been a bit lower and this sounds out of tune to our adjusted ears
