I think I’ve only ever heard of THC overdose in animals…this is of course in unusual circumstances, like ‘small dog ate the entire medical marijuana formulation’. It does work a bit differently for them though. (PSA from your friendly neighborhood vet wannabe: KEEP WEED IN PETPROOF PLACES. Heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature drop, they piss themselves and they stagger around while being super nervous. Edibles may be more dangerous because of sweeteners, chocolate or raisins. But weed is NOT fun for them.)

I had a 9-year-old student who had a real stay-in-bed-mom, I mean, this girl would walk 30 minutes to school just because she wanted to be there, and her mom would never have food in the house. She was so hungry one morning and saw a bag of gummy bears on the counter, and she ate the whole bag. She WALKED to school high af, and collapsed when she got to her classroom. She was in the hospital for a lot longer than you’d expect. Parents can be so shitty.

Gee i wonder if it's a bad idea to have medical chemicals infused into candies and left around children. EDIT: Im not saying candy medicine is bad, I'm saying that not being responsible about your candy medicine when you have children is bad. Just like with guns, have your candy meds but be responsible and keep it from your kids. Maybe talk to your kids about it and help them understand that they could get sick or die if they ate it. People who don't know the smell or the taste wouldn't know what it is. I didn't have any experience with it before dating a pothead in my thirties, lol. My first thoughts about it was that gosh, this herb smells delicious! Not the smoke, but the herb itself. If there was perfume with that smell, I'd wear it :D So if I was someone oblivious, this would NOT stop me from eating the gummies, quite the opposite, I'd be like what is this lovely smell, yum-yum :D I don't like the effects of it though, I get paranoid. I just really enjoy sniffing it :D Now I am really good at detecting the smell tho. Whereas a relative who is a retired police officer(!), turned out to be totally oblivious :D We were walking in the city center and I pointed out that these guys in front of us smell like weed, and he was like ohh, so that's the smell :D (This wasn't snitching, as he was retired and is not actually against herbal stuff or acid, as he's a big fan of the American hippie culture, as someone who had lived in oppressive Soviet union in his youth - so he wouldn't snitch on a pothead :D ... he even told me that if I ever have weed, he'd like to try)
@janellea1028

@@vihmaussivenitaja i don't necessarily agree with that. as a stoner i personally think that w33d smells amazing, but to the average person it is usually strong and unpleasant. the smell comes from volatile sulfurs which is the same chemical that makes skunk spray smell so bad. thats why some people say "why does it smell like skunk in here?" well its because it kind of does smell like skunk. anyway, my point is that i severely doubt that if the gummies did have a smell that the child would be attracted to it.

My dad always kept guns in the house when I was growing up, but responsibly kept them protected in a safe so my brother and I would never be able to get into them and accidentally hurt ourselves. Even though weed is the safest of the substances generally, I feel like keeping safes would be super helpful for parents. Even for liquor in the house, now that I think about it. @@reardenbentley9622 Yeah. Drinking vape juice, on the other hand... way more toxic than one might actually expect. Also an interesting fact - so far as is known, no one has ever died from an LSD overdose. Scientists have an idea of what a theoretical lethal dose is, but it's never been confirmed. There was a published paper about a woman a few years ago who was attempting to buy cocaine but received pure powdered LSD instead and, dosing it like cocaine, ended up snorting an unimaginably high dose. Despite repeated vomiting, she described herself as being "pleasantly high" for many hours and did not require hospitalization. Her roommate confirmed a lot of the details there.
Really, he hid it with normal candies and thought it would be totally fine and nobody else would get into them? Unbelievable, what reckless behavior.

I also have mental health issues that it helps, and now that I’m old, I use it for chronic pain, too. But speaking of mental health issues, I’ve known people who should never go near it, because of the nature of their mental conditions. In states where it’s been made legal, overdose deaths have dropped, but like any other drug, you can come to grief with it, given enough persistent stupidity.

Speaking as a former child, I think it's kind of dangerous to think that there are places "kids can't reach". Definitely go for something that can lock, I think. There is _no_ shelf a determined child can't reach, and finding candy hidden away will probably just make them think their parents didn't want them having that perfectly innocent candy. That it was the _parent's_ treat, but not that there is anything about it that would make it for adults, other than ownership.

definitely not defending the dad considering he had a daughter and it should have been obvious not to hide edibles in bag of regular gummies. But we should also remove the stigma of cannabis use when used in a responsible way (hiding gummies in a regular bag is not responsible though). But if he was just allowed to have a small amount of edibles after a hard days work (better than having a 6 pack every day imo) and not have to hide it from his wife and would be able to store responsibly this could all be avoided.

My friend's elderly grandfather once consumed 11 cannabutter cookies. 1 would be a slight to moderate buzz, 2 pretty high, and 3 was generally too much for most people. He ended up in the hospital. Once the doctors determined what happened they had a good laugh, realizing he was not in any danger. The old guy ended up sleeping for like 2 days or something and then woke up like nothing had happened, and he had no memory of being taken to the hospital either, all he remembered was eating those cookies with some tea and then he woke up in the hospital a couple days later.

They were definitely sugar free too, the wife got that right. He ate the whole lot in like 5 mins or something. Good thing there was only 11 I guess. They were small but potent. Nobody called the cops on my friend or anything, even though everyone knew (including the hospital staff) that he had that in his freezer, and ganja was still illegal here back in those days. Weird thing is that those cookies definitely tasted slightly like weed I was told. The old guy loved them and couldn't stop eating them apparently. Guy gave me a bag of edibles, 20 gummies equal to 400mg total. I was tired after work Sunday night last week and ate the entire bag in one chomp. The following 4 hours were a living hell and for fear of doing anything stupid (other than that) I laid in bed and used the effects of what I felt to stay asleep. That lasted just about 2 days. I finally woke up and looked around. Never doing that again. Potheads can keep their gummies and their weed. Edit: Upon reading comments of similar experiences, I am fortunate enough that I actually keep 3 gallons of water in my fridge at all times so when I started feeling my skin crawl and senses shift, I grabbed a gallon, went back to bed, and put the gallon next to me. Every time I woke up I’d chug the gallon, and throughout the course of the process I drank 2 gallons (with no activity besides sleeping) so that was roughly 1gal a day on an OD

But for weed, that was really dumb of Clinton and Biden to allow that bill it to through that locked up tens of thousands of non-violent black men for simple possession. Kamala also jailed hundreds of non-violent black men for simple possession as well.
Preciate u spreading the word a lot of people don’t understand the dangers of leaving these kinda of things out. Too much negligence
I'm very grateful that the young girl made a full recovery. Also thank you for the information about the respiratory risks for very young children and THC edibles. I feel like this is information that needs to be more widely distributed since marijuana is becoming recreationally legal in so many areas.

Along with obviously irresponsible parents here, I always thought it was unnecessary for the companies to print the candy and cartoon logos on the product. It's for adults, and we need to do our part if we want to see more legalization. In Wisconsin here, and I can't wait!
Let's all have a moment of silence, not for the girl, she's fine, for the dad after mom confronted him.

Honestly to do that when you have kids to me is completely unforgiveable... As a father myself I'd feel like punching any idiot I heard did something so stupid with kids in the house.. If I ever met him I'd probably just think about how good it would feel to punch him in the face. As a father, I can't stand such selfish idiots... no thank you. that 'dad' is a dumbass and should face some consequences for this. Mixing your edibles in with candy and leaving them where your kid could eat them is extreme negligence and arguably, in this case, is child abuse. I used to smoke more or less everyday for a few years. Despite that, I've had panic attacks and experiences that were extremely challenging mentally speaking. I cannot imagine what this kid felt, especially not knowing that they had ingested anything.

If I was the dad, I would've kept it in my bedroom, in a locked box with the rest of my weed stuff. Edibles should not be treated like candy, just like a firearm shouldn't be treated like a nerf gun or vodka shouldn't be treated like water.

@Gandalf or, from her young age, it traumatized her really deeply. I mean, even as an adult I'd be terrified if I accidentally ate a bunch of edibles, and that's with experience using Marijuana. I couldn't imagine how scary it'd be as a kid to have that kind of massive OD experience (not an OD in the physical sense but just taking an insane amount.) Thankfully THC isn't something like PCP, that could have gone *really* bad. I just hope the child is okay mentally after the experience.

Moral of the story: Unless you have pre existing heart conditions, when you overdose on thc you’ll just have a REALLY bad trip and hate life for 12-36 hours (depending on how badly you OD’d). With pre existing heart conditions, you can INDIRECTLY cause a heart attack due to the almost guaranteed anxiety attack you will go through, so yes, it can TECHNICALLY be fatal, though incredibly rare.

YES YES AND YES, not enough people are educated on drugs other than booze and caffeine and that is what causes DRUG DEATHS, ya know the phrase 'guns don't kill people, people kill people' well if we did that with it but for substances, it would go - 'drugs dont kill people, uneducated people putting unknown amounts of un-regulated and therefore not-tested-for-quality-and-safety chemicals in their bodies kill themselves' hence the term 'accidental overdose', when there is a way of highly preventing those from happening like in denmark, canada, switzerland, portugal, where there are safe consumption rooms, with nurses and professionals, over behind a bin in some alleyway, away from sight so never found when OD'ing (can you tell ive lost alot of friends because of lack of safe consumption rooms in the UK)

Quality knowledge
When I was a kid, we had a medicine cabinet that had a hole in the door, and only an adult length middle finger could reach the inside latch to open it. Quite ingenious, but my child brain was easily able to defeat it by creating a finger extension from modeling clay. Moral of the story is, if you dont want your kid getting access to something, dont keep it in the house.

I help train Amazon drivers, and one of the stories we tell each class as a warning is about a local young girl. She was likely brought up in a very religious household, and one customer had left out brownies with a sign that said "made with special butter". She ended up ignorantly downing the entire brownie in one go. She called dispatch upset and very incoherent, saying how her delivery van was melting. She ended up in the ER.
