A German Christmas market in Dresden | DW Documentary

Conjuring up the perfect Christmas spirit is hard work for those working at Dresden's Striezelmarkt Christmas market. Then there are all the concerns about security.
Fairy tale houses, bakeries, handicrafts, mulled wine and the Dresden fruitcake now known as Stollen, once called Striezel, from which the market gets its name - with more than 230 booths, it's easy to get into the Yuletide spirit. And that's what visitors do, despite tightened security since the terrorist attack in Berlin two years ago. Concrete bollards, barriers and large water containers are meant to provide security. There are more police patrolling the streets than in the past. It's a new normality, and many people still have to get used to it. A Report by Thomas Gill.

My boyfriend is from Dresden. His family has lived there since before the reunification. His Opa lived there in 1945, when it was bombed for 2 days in February. His family wasn't allowed to go to West Germany until 1990.

The last 2 sentences were very apt. This year we went to Frankfurt for the Christmas markets. Fabulous but sad the rest of the country market people had to suffer another year without an income

Had the opportunity to walk past this market just last week on the way back to the train station…Sadly it was on a Friday after we visited the old town….They were still preparing the stalls and decoration guessing they were getting ready for the next day (weekend) proper opening….still managed to get some good photos of the lovely decorations. Perhaps one day can visit again this beautiful town and experience the Christmas market on its full glory.

I believe you should always cook, or bake, with your hands, like we have done for thousands of years. It is how you transfer your love, energy, devotion, and intelligence into the food; all very important ingredients. Gloves block this flow. Obviously it's necessary to always have properly cleaned hands when doing so, which I'm sure they adhere to. Hairnets, esp if you have long hair, i agree with :)
