This is a must-watch if you're wondering why it seems like men today just can't catch a break. In the next hour you’re going to get a break down of exactly how a generation of men are now poorer than their parents, feeling lost, broke, and still single.
To help me tackle this topic today is Professor Scott Galloway, the brilliant mind behind "No Mercy No Malice," who has the uncanny ability to dissect the troubling trends facing modern men: less dating, no sex, being poor and not having meaningful relationships.
His take on the shifts in our modern culture and their impact on young men's financial and emotional states is eye-opening. And while he’s not saying it’s time for male affirmative action, he is saying its seriously past time for real, actionable solutions.
Societal structures, from education to technology, are stacked against stacked men, and we exist in a society that shames men for their ambition, labels them toxic, avoids the uncomfortable questions and passively supports their financial and social frustrations.
We're peeling back the layers to unveil why guys feel lost, hopeless, and lonely.
But here's the thing-we're not about wallowing in the problem; we're chasing down solutions. From social media regulation and revamping AI governance, to hands-on vocational programs, we're advocating steps to elevate men and, by extension, society.
Remember, your north star should be fulfilling and embrace the challenges. Without hard things to conquer, life just feels crappy. Prepare to get metaphorically taller and rediscover your purpose.
Chapter Markers:
[00:27] Introduction
[00:27] Lonely Broke Young Men
[26:18] Pornographic Tech & Idolizing AU
[49:27] Making Men Productive Again
QUOTES:
“While boys are physically stronger, girls are emotionally and mentally much stronger. So, you have some societal factors producing emotionally weak men.”
“I think we’ve done a great job lifting women up, focusing and trying to address some of the injustices and biases that women have had to endure for a long time. I wouldn’t say that we’ve overcorrected, but I think that people don’t have a sympathetic ear to young men.”
“Empathy is not a zero sum game.”
“When you have a whole cohort of young men who are not going to college, not having the same economic opportunities and have no or little prospects for romantic relationships, you generate the most dangerous person in the world, and that is a lonely broke young man.”
“I’m a technology optimist, but I’m also worried that we’re so fascinated by technology and we suffer in the United States what I call an idolatry of innovators.”
“The cake has never been bigger, we’re just slicing it differently.”
“As parents we use so many sanitary wipes on our child’s lives that they don’t develop their own immunities.”

I'm lost, lazy, single but far from broke. I am eagerly anticipating a future where I can spend quality time with my ideal A.I. robot partner! I embrace my laziness and exploit it to its fullest potential. It's a sign of intelligence to conserve energy for more important matters. Instead of pursuing genuine human connections, I'll invest my time and resources into crafting the perfect A.I. robot partner. I'll focus solely on its appearance and functionality, disregarding any emotional or ethical considerations. After all, a robotic partner won't challenge my authority or question my decisions.

I actually make more money than my father did at my age. The difference is that he was able to support a family and pay for a two-story detached house in the suburbs on his own, whereas I can barely afford a fucking basement apartment in the city which I was born and raised in. The system is broken sets us up for failure from the start.

I take issue with being called lazy. I used to work 100 hour plus work weeks did this for years. My reward was debt slavery when I graduated spring 2007. These days what started as $30k debt is now over six figures and I have no career to show for it. I am not lazy I choose to bai lan.

@jessehamilton4223 Same. I got involved with software in the late 90s. I started out studying hard on my own and was advised that I needed a degree to be a software engineer. I studied in my free time, then went to college and after 3 years, they screwed me with incorrect paperwork. I got out with debt, no degree, and a broken down car just in time for the financial collapse of 2008. Finding a job that paid above minimum wage within walking distance was impossible. I worked so hard to get that debt paid off so I could finish my degree, worked rotating shift work sometimes up to 16 hour days, joined the military, continued to study software, and finally got my debt paid off and the degree. And the only jobs offered to me (20+ years of software hobby experience) were 45 hour work weeks with extra 24-hour on-call work for pay that would only cover half of what could afford a house. All the engineers there had to live with roommates. Even after taking the job, proving my ability, them making me a team lead and instructor, they only cared about how long I had been at the company regarding pay. The system is absolutely broken. And I'm done with it.

Living through the recession when I turned 18 is the main reason why I have fallen behind and why I experience a spiral of failures each year, being on the edge of homelessness and death, mental and physical deteriorated, and my family relationships have been strained. I live with my parents and it has been two years only when I started to have a job that pays well. I never had sex, never had a girlfriend, and women today shun me in the work place. Most women in their 30s are already married, have kids, and have high body count. Younger women want older successful males or a Chad.

My advice to young men is don't listen to these boomers telling you you owe the world something, you don't. We're constantly told that the world doesn't owe us anything, and that's fine, but don't expect us to owe the world something then. Live the life that's best for you. Yup. It’s like the idea of cause and effect has been done away with strictly when it comes to human behavior, almost like a new version of believing we have souls but this time it’s more like “an unshakably stable internal state that exists outside of material reality”. Even work just rewards you with more work when you work hard enough that you blow past expectations. “Hey you did literally more than double what we even say we pay you to do. Now go do this other thing for no extra gain.” Even after doing it for a while and you ask for a raise they’re like J Jonah Jameson when Peter asks to be paid in advance.

Partying and boozing is not what life is about and most people without work would die 30 years early because to much partying and boozing lol. Moral of the story is there’s always someone who has or had it better. And we could spend all of our lives and moping about how someone else had it better or we could spend our lives, enjoying our one life that we are gifted and making the most out of it having no regrets and not wasting time comparing it to lives that are not ours.

No he doesn't, raising minimum wage is not going to do something to the relationship status of those men because women are looking up and the men will still be lower. The prices of goods and services will go up partly offsetting the benefit they get from wage increases. Those salaries need to be payed somehow, and those with the least resources are disproportionately affected when prices of basic goods like food increase. The elephant in the room is that women and men are equal yet when it comes to criticizing there are only men (weak emotionally, living parents etc), yet Galloway is terrified to say something that might offend women. One of the reasons there’s a lot of mainstream discussion about this is the rapidly falling birth rates everywhere in the world (except for certain fundamentalist/traditionalist countries in Africa) which is a massive problem for the global economy going forward. Dependency on eternal growth means that a global population of workers needs to be maintained- and its not. One of the big reasons for this is that women globally are rejecting the mainstream culture and its narratives around pretty much everything related to reproduction and pairing up, which is the primary reason in the US behind the Republican’s theocracy push to control women’s bodies, wombs and reproduction and which is now including attempts to ban ALL kinds of reproductive technology including _condoms_ . What do you think is going to happen when women can no longer even protect themselves against catching STI’s from cheating partners? Have you seen the rising statistics in the US on the resurgence of syphilis? You really think that women think men _benefit_ them in this modern culture? Men *created* the foundations of the culture they’re now saying isn’t benefitting them, when the speaker even admitted how much he benefitted from programs he didn’t really deserve and was _supported_ by women in his endeavours. Women worldwide are over it. Look up the 4B movement, it’s going global and _men and their unchecked behaviours as a global culture_ have created this.

I think it is very weird that he thinks teen pregnancy rate going down means kids aren’t having fun. I think teen pregnancy rates going down is a positive, especially for women. Perhaps people have learned from the past and are taking precautions these days. I say this as someone who was born from a teen parent. Also, the fact that men aren’t having sex seems to be a huge focus instead of men not having meaningful relationships in their lives (whether that be romantic, familial or friendship). There is a disconnect between men and women. I don’t want to speak for ALL women of course, but a lot don’t want to just be hooking up. They want to be with men who truly want to get to know and love them and a lot feel like they have to have sex to get love, and then they feel dejected when in reality, the man just wanted to “mate”🤢. Women are realizing this and are choosing not to prioritize relationships with men as they are not always fulfilling. Tom himself said all he was looking for was to get laid. This is not what women want (unless of course that is what that woman wants - some do just want to hookup)

Women are fed up with doing it all and I don't hear him saying enough about that. It still sounds like it's all about him and he's projecting that onto other men and that's not the full picture. There are some great guys out there doing their part. No one teaches them as kids how they will survive in the world as adults, so they don't end up with survival skills. 70% of autistic people don't work. Part of it is because of social awkwardness. Parents and teachers are failing them. This is a major reason there are less males in the workplace and less getting into relationships. Everyone wants to pretend that autistic kids don't turn into autistic adults after 18 years. They just want to sweep their existence under the rug.

He has some good points (except the economic policy advice which require you invincible, eternally youthful, and limited a different way.) but my biggest issue is his attributions and characterizing. He picks an extreme portion of a subpop of men and paints it whole then proceeds to use that as the justification of his idea completely bypassing the legitimate views of that tribe while arguing for the same thing they are a different way. He'll dabble in it but --in less than a minute-- do the equivalent of telling them to abandon them and do this over here. A hug and a slap at the same time.

Exactly. Boomers talking about hard work makes my eyes roll to the back of the head. Sub 10% HHI here, best we can do is a crappy shack built 50 years ago. Kids and retirement are not even in the horizon. Let's not even talk about cars, vacation and entertainement. It's impossible nowadays. Back then, that was the status quo for every American we a mid-grade job. And they have the audacity to chalk it up to "hard work". Lmfao. Please

After over 10 years on self-improvement, the number one thing I’ve come to understand is that I am most disciplined, strong, fulfilled, loving, and present, when everything I do is an expression of a healthy self worth. I have nothing to prove, not even to myself. I realise that I am worthy of my own honour and respect, and that of others. If I’m not treating myself in the best way to honour the highest side of myself, or I’m allowing others to treat me badly, then something is off. I honour the passions and purposes I feel called toward by diligently working toward them. I work on myself everyday and reap the rewards, not because I need to so I can feel good about myself, but because guess what, I’m worth it. I deserve to be happy, healthy and prosperous, so do you.

The landlords are operating as cartels and are completely out of control, trying to take every last cent of working people's spending power to pad their own retirements. Time for lowered rent caps as achieved by activists in Berlin. Will increase quality of life and benefit the entire economy. Also, unionize.
