The Shining was critically panned when it was first released not just from the Razzies. And that was mostly due to it being a terrible adaptation of the book.
The Razzies never were about objectively the worst movies of the year, but the ones that created some sort of negative impact or controversy.
I think that "Can't Stop the Music" got as much backlash as it did because it came out when disco was declared officially dead. There were movies like "Airplane" and "The Blues Brothers" that came out the same year which had prominent jokes about how dated disco had become
Can’t Stop the Music actually made its money back. It was a huge success in Australia and became #1 at the box office and still is shown down under. It also was a hit in Japan and Bali!

I think you’re forgetting also with Can’t Stop the Music is that there was a huge backlash against disco music which was based in homophobia and racism over saturation of the market.
@AtlasBlizzard
26 күн бұрын
Yeah, I fear homophobia played a part. What better target for homophobes than a loose biopic on the most famous gay group ever?
@seaofghosts
26 күн бұрын
That doesn't make any sense that homophobia was behind it since the Village People had great success with their music. Why would people buy their music but eschew the movie if they were anti-gay? Besides, there were many disco artists who were straight eg. Bee Gees, Diana Ross, KC and the Sunshine Band. However the popularity of disco music had waned overall by the time of the release of the movie. Plus, it just wasn't a good movie. A movie has several components. Poor writing, poor direction etc can all contribute to a poor result. Popularity btw doesn't always equal quality.
@vinnym5607
26 күн бұрын
The disco backlash wasn't based on homophobia alone. It's based on homophobia, racism and it's noteworthy and aside from the Bee Gees, it doesn't hurt that it's biggest star is a black woman (Donna Summer)

@@vinnym5607 you’re right Vinny I don’t believe I left racism out of it. I’m 65. I was going to all the underground gay and black clubs, back in the late 70s and early 80s in New York City. Donna Summer was the diva my cousin Joey sang in the group Brooklyn dreams. He wrote bad girls and sang with her on heaven knows.
@seaofghosts
26 күн бұрын
@@vinnym5607 So now racism is behind the demise of disco. Why not throw sexism into the mix too? After all, Donna Summer was also a woman. Summer continued to have a successful career when the disco craze ended well into the 80s. How do you square that with your theory that people turned from disco due to racism? Why should they turn from one genre to another when the artist they allegedly dislike due to her colour had hits with both? Oh, and who else did well during the 80s? Michael Jackson? Wasn't he black?

What if there is a movie about the story of the Razzies being made?
As widely praised as it is today, The Shining was met with a lot of hostility upon its initial release, so these nominations should not be at all surprising. One of the film's biggest detractors was actually Stephen King, the novel's author, who was unsettled by the choices Kubrick made for the film, and apparently that's one of the reasons John J.B. Wilson stands by his nominating The Shining for Razzies. Apparently there were several critics who compared it unfavorably to the book (if you read some of the original reviews from people such as Janet Maslin, Pauline Kael, Roger Ebert, most of them were quite negative... Ebert called it "a crashing disappointment. The biggest surprise is that it contains virtually no thrills. Given Kubrick's world-class reputation, one's immediate reaction is that maybe he was after something other than thrills in the film. If so, it's hard to figure out what.")... The Shining's acclaim came later upon reappraisal, which is why these nominations seem silly now (it happens with all award shows, given that they are a time capsule of a specific year, and movies have a life beyond the year they were released in)...
I wish I had my own Andrew to talk Oscars with. LOL

It’s a fine line - punching down vs punching up if you will. Picking on movies and actors from major studios that happened to be terrible can be good fun. But picking on low budget, indie stuff and kids is kinda gross.

I’d love if you guys can break down these Razzi awards from every year if possible. I’d love to know your opinion!
Met Betsy Palmer at least three times over the years at conventions and she was the biggest sweetheart. She was also a fantastic actor to boot, her performance in f13th was very effective and the entire movie hinges on her performance.
I saw "You Can't Stop The Music" in the theaters, as did probably every boomer gay man in Atlanta at the time because the Village People were so huge. I love the song but the movie did indeed suck with horrible acting, but "worst of the year" not to sure about that. I also saw "Cruising" in the theaters as well. Hated it and the only thing I remember about the movie is when Al Pachino is in the park and says "hips or lips when picking up a guy in the park. Being a way out of the closet gay man at the time I'd never heard that and haven't since but maybe I'm just naive. LOL
I was OBSESSED with the Blue Lagoon in my preteen/early teen years. I have no idea how I first came across this movie as it came out 2 years before I was born (most likely a late night cable replay). I know the movie is not great, but it was such a big part of my formative years (repeated viewings, forcing my friends to watch it during sleepovers, wanting to be stranded on an island), I can't hate it! My favorite book at the time was Island of The Blue Dolphins so I was really, really into that stranded on an Island life, HAHA!
I used to see Betsy Palmer on 😮game shows in the 60s. She did a lot of theater then.
Allan Carr produced Can't Stop The Music because his last movie he produced was a musical and was a huge hit with Grease.
This was a really fun video! Would love to see this become a series covering the Mommie Dearest, Showgirls, many of Madonna's wins, Glitter, Gigli, Basic Instinct 2 and Britney's Crossroads movie years. Thanks, Brian ❤
Would you have any interest in doing a spotlight on the International Press Academy and the (Golden) Satellite Awards? It is one of the most bonkers award bodies with some really fascinating winners. Not for nothing, the statue is actually quite lovely too.

the major problem i have with the Razzie, is as you say off the top, its super hard to get a film made but a critical look at the movies of a certain year that is constructive and objective could be a good counter point to the oscars. But in general the Razzies is just celeb bashing and cultural hot topic band wagon jumping off.
Xanadu is such a waste of a great soundtrack. Kinda love the final number but as a movie, it kinda sucks.
I really liked Sondra Locke in Bronco Billy, and Betsy Palmer was iconic. I was oddly happy to see Marilyn Sokol in the mix, because I wish she had more roles and was better known. I don't recall her in Can't Stop the Music, but she tore it up in Foul Play (1978) as the badass Librarian who carries mace and brass knuckles, because: nobody's gonna meas with Stella unless Stella wants to be messed.
Xanadu is so fun!
I love The Blue Lagoon
Betsy Palmer getting nominated wasn't a surprise if you go way back. She faced a terrible amount of backlash for appearing in that. People were disgusted with her. Gene Siskel actually published her contact details so people could write to her to complain - just so insane and ridiculous and totally undeserved as well. They had their claws (and fangs) out when they compiled their list.
@rustincohle2135
16 күн бұрын
Her acting was also terrible. But hard to be good when you're given a script like _Friday the 13th._ She actually hated the movie too and said she only did it cuz she needed a new car.
The Harvard Lampoon has the Razzies beat by several decades; their "Movie Worst" lists are fun and entertaining. Natalie Wood and Elizabeth Taylor were pioneers for showing up to the ceremony in order to accept their Worst Actress awards.
A bit of context for the era for those nominations: Can't Stop the Music was released when disco was dying and facing a huge backlash. The Shining was viewed as a major critical disappointment - with Kubrick and Jack Nicholson being singled out in particular. Friday the 13th received enormous blowback from critics of the slasher genre. Siskel and Ebert went so far as to call out Betsy Palmer for "lowering" herself to appear in such a movie. Palmer later explained she took the movie because she needed money to buy a car. Brooke Shields was also under scrutiny at the time due to her age and the manner in which she was being sexualized in Pretty Baby, Calvin Klein jeans ads, and Blue Lagoon. Looking back - a lot of the nominations were ridiculous. Except for the Jazz Singer. It truly, truly sucked.
I read somewhere that the people voting for the Razzies don’t always watch the movies nominated.
And also Silvestor Stallone would be a punching bag for the razzies.
Story time about The Blue Lagoon: it was the first movie I've ever seen with a signficant erotic charge, even if sugar-coated in a romantic, family-friendly aura. In fact in such a family-friendly aura that I watched it at age 9 with my parents in our newly-bought VCR! (And multiple of my friends at school also watched it in a similar fashion.) And now in hindsight, it was also my first bisexual awakening, because I couldn't decided who was hotter to me: Brooke Shields or Christopher Adkins. For me, they were both equally gorgeous!
Brian can you please do a video on Boyhood vs Birdman?
I love Xanadu ❤
I kinda like "Xanadu". Now "Inchon", on the other hand?
I've only seen a handful of these movies, but it kinda feels like they're singling out a lot of queer films? I had never noticed that before, but it gives me the impression of a homophobic undercurrent. Correct me if I'm wrong.

This (and the Razzies in general) is such a fascinating insight into the zeitgeist of the moment--most especially the elements of cultural opinion that get forgotten. We might not collectively realize that people didn't like The Shining when it came out if not for this first Razzies. And I suspect that there was a cultural hate on for Brook Shields as an actress at the time? No way to know. But cultural self-awareness of mass dislike of teenage girl stuff is very, very recent.
I have A Change Of Seasons dvd. 😊
I thought Xanadu should've won worst picture.
Looking at these awards historically it is important to take into account the cultural vibe at the time. People could pile-on back then as they do now. People in the intelligentsia were sick of disco and Brooke Shields, and The Shining was derided for a long time.
IMHO, "The Razzies have a tendency, to like to nominate people who have had successes at some point and suddenly stumble upon a not-so-well made movie, which ideally flops at the BO. And they LOVE to bash Vanity Projects. At the same time, Amy Irving was part of the crew that at the time involved DePalma, Spielberg and Coppola, so fame by association is an easy target like Paris Hilton.
I've never liked the existence of the Razzie's. I'm not a hatewatch guy, plus a lot of the time, the Razzie's are as biased as the Oscar's. Perfectly fine performances have been nominated and even some good songs, like Enya's "Book of Days" from Far and Away (the song wasn't even originally written for the film, so not an original song). Sometimes it just feels like they pick what movie or actor's trendy to hate on, and that's really lame and disingenuous. On the other hand, disasters like Xanadu are exactly the kind of films that this award should gravitate towards. Like, at least Can't Stop the Music is an actual musical, unlike Xanadu where the characters hardly ever sing the songs and it's just a boring slog for most of its runtime. It's not even so-bad-it's-good, it's just... underwhelming.

I get objecting to more recent nominees, like the girl from the "Firestarter" remake, but I doubt that many of the people who were dissed that first year lost much sleep over it.
