Most of the counties in Southeast Kansas have lost population since the 1980s. It is sad because SE Kansas is a lovely area. Great video.

That's because the people running our towns want them to be a retirement town. So they remove everything family oriented and deny businesses so the towns are suffering and people with families are leaving..it's happening here where I live in sek now.

I will be 80 in May. I went to a two room country school, the first small room was at the entrance which housed our coal burning furnace. Our air conditioning was opening the windows. We had a maypole, two outside outhouses and a small horse barn. I have a BS teaching degree with 33 graduate credit hours. The best teacher I had was in that school, Mrs Nellie Ramage. Yes, from the time was eight, I road my horse to school. I could get the saddle off, but couldn’t lift it on, Mrs. Ramage would help me, or a 7th or 8th grader. The farm I grew up on was 11 miles South of Holton Ks and 4 miles from Mayetta. Back to our two room school and Mrs. Ramage. We usually had around 12 kids in school, enough for a softball team, our short stop was really short, my position when I was a 4th grader. Our conference consisted of 3 schools. Our art was to decorate the windows, we had the solar system hanging from the ceiling, we would go to the timber and creeks for science. We would have two plays a year, one for Christmas and one in the late Spring. I had my first kiss behind the play curtain, she was freckeled face and very cute, thinking I was 7 or 8. I traded my horse for a car when I was 14, a freshman. I went to Holton HS so was allowed to get a license at an early age. Just over all, a great place to grow up.

I moved from a Large Metropolitan Area to a small town in Kansas. Took me 40+ years to do so, but I never gave up on the dream of doing so. In my three years here, I have only heard Police/Fire/Ambulance sirens less than 6 times as to where, in the larger metropolitan area, every 5 to 10 minutes People here are more relaxed, more respectful towards their neighbors, and more helpful. I told my old landlord before I moved here, that I was going home. I AM AT HOME

The beautiful big red building was the Former city Hall building, they inhabited that location until the new city complex was built on the west end of town. Unfortunately, our grocery store is now closed. I believe the old Mill restaurant was there in the next red building. Next time you make it to town be sure and visit The Hornet’s Nest down on the west end of town, it was originally a drive in, then later had a dining room added on, and eventually purchased by my family in 1981! We have been serving Chetopa as a family restaurant since then, and you’re absolutely right, WE LOVE OUR TOWN!!!

Interesting about the Cathiolic church. Love that old Sinclair gas station. Wow Pecan capitol of Kansas. Love pecans! Sad that buildings burn down and not built again. Love old drug stores( since I am a pharmacist). Cool gift shop!! Sad to hear about the stores closing down. Glad they have a museum to help preserve their past. Love that old mill! Looks like a good place to fish. I am glad to see the veteran memorial!!

About coal tar: Coal tar is a dark, thick liquid that forms as a byproduct of the production of coke from coal. This liquid has both medical and industrial uses. Coal tar is used in the field of medicine due to its important properties like antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-itch, and antiparasitic properties. In measured amounts, it’s very safe.
