A Flawed Story and How NOT to Handle Power Creep | The 100

Фильм және анимация

Today at the Mystery Shack, continuing from the first part in the series, we examine the other side of the coin - how not to handle power creep. We will look at how the series went from surviving in the woods to a solar-system surfing disco war filled with Deus ex Machinas, discuss why it happened and why I personally believe that the show was never meant to last this long.

This video is making sound bad (recaps are weak) by always trying to top themselves but the fact that they did, it was never cliche/predictable, and made sense is amazing. Season 6/7 I see as downloadable content. Watch if you like the characters, but know the main game is over. Seasons 5 ending would have been perfect for the series. Watching some of the episodes with my cousin over a break was hilarious, this show is so bad. Every episode was like “oh, I sure hope nothing bad happens” then that one specific bad thing happens. Or it’s just nothing of consequence, or it’s solved regardless of what the characters do. Or the character does something completely illogical in response to a possible threat, but by doing so that one specific action is the only action that would turn the threat onto them.

this just occurred to me: was there ever an explanation for why the miners were able to handle the atmosphere of Earth when they returned? season two's entire plot revolved around the habitability issue, so shouldn't the mining crew have just insta-died to radiation poisoning like the residents of Mt. Like everytime. And what and who Bill Cadogan was to decide whether the humankind wanted to be light beings instead of.... humans?? And who where the judge and all them to decide whether the ones that stayed on Earth would not be able to have kids and repopulate the Earth. Or why they didn't give the same option to the other beings they erased from existence. This show raises very serious philosophical issues but doesn't resolve them. season 4 was great because the characters were made to be what they are: humans. yes they weren’t portrayed as teenagers (which most are) which wasn’t as cool, but they were living on a planet that was about to be covered in radiation & fire. It was a race against time the whole season, with the final episode being the most satisfying conclusion to a season wide story i have yet to see in another show. Season 3 was a bit weird - I think last minute writing changes were made with certain characters that changed the whole season (wick, lincoln, lexa). but the first 4 seasons were pretty solid. with the finale of season 5 being so fucking beautiful, the messy plotlines that built up to it were forgiven. this show thrived off making the characters feel relateable, that stopped the minute season 6 started with a different planet, body hijacking, a weird fairy culture & aesthetic that just made it look a very ‘cw’ storyline.

Shows evolving is not necessarily a bad thing but it needs to be done well. A good example of this would be attack on titan. The seeds for how the show ended up evolving were in the first season. This makes it feel like a natural progression into what it became. The 100 fails to do this. There are no signs of anything that happens in the later seasons that can be found in the first few seasons. This is why it has the power creep issue.

That’s how you see if a show is planned in advance or just written on the fly. Isayama had a pretty broad and detailed plan/ idea that he was going to go through. He sat down and took his time to plan out what and how it is going to happen, which I highly doubt the authors of the 100 did. Also, the foreshadowing in that anime is godlike. This reminds me of the story lore within the game ARK: Survival Evolved. The main maps each have a story of the survivors who lived there but eventually became Sci-fi. The island: Various tribes warring for control of the whole place, then three survivors move on. Scorched Earth: Two survivors surviving in a desert, again dealing with tribes and such. This time incorporating a massive time skip between the stories of two characters who were there, and the two important ones. Aberration: This is where things start getting Sci-fi. This world's ark was damaged by an explosion by people from the present period (this is set in a post-apocalyptic time) and forced them to live underground to avoid the radiation. One guy goes mad with what he believes is Ascension before getting trapped in the system by the player long after the others left. Extinction: Following the tracks of the survivors who were there, all the while being guided by an ascended human who is responsible for the player being where they are. Genesis part 1 and part 2: the player is now leading their own story, they are on equal footing with those whose story they were once following. And the entire thing is sci-fi now.

The show seems much more concise and powerful and “full circle,” with our two leads looking down at a new earth, or second chance, from a new “ark.” The awful season 6 character arcs of Kane and Abby, and even worse of Clarke and Bellamy in season 7, would never happen. But c'mon ffs that magical switch wasn't so magical after all. It's not something that just came out of nowhere. The writers were actually building towards finding the AI's Killswitch a couple of episodes into the final via the engineering mechanic raven. And it wasn't that easy as Alie clearly placed a lot of stop blockers to them accessing the city of light and created a firewall for herself and was on the process of updating her software to annihilate the Killswitch . This guy just makes the 'magical killswitch' seem like the resolution to the third season when it was rather the climax. Furthermore pulling the Killswitch wasn't an easy decision since it came with a cost. Alie explained to Clarke what she could be risking by pulling the lever, which was the falling action of the conflict. The resolution was Clarke deciding to rather have everyone keep their humanity and figure out a way to deal with the new danger that awaits them than having their minds uploaded into the virtual reality and lose their humanity. Pulling the switch clearly came with heavy implications where both the protagonist and antagonist were at a loss. And that's one of the things I liked about this show. They don't always go for the easy route with the protags in the final frontier. They place them at a corner whereby taking both highways to a solution has drastic effects placing them in a dilemma where they have to make a well thought decision on which highway would less damaging implications on the longer run.

There was no power creep because it told you what the end goal was and you were expecting shit to go down the way it did. I think the main issue wasn't that this one simple dagger was introduced back in season 1, or that Valyrian Steel was shown to kill white walkers, it's more the idea that the show contradicts itself as the bit about wights falling apart when a white walker is killed wasn't ever shown when the other white walkers were killed in seasons 3 and 5 respectively. It's a perfect example of a bogus way to overcome new obstacles because it just sorta shoehorns the solution in and hopes people wouldn't notice how it didn't do that beforehand, and in the case of GoT, the characters didn't suddenly develop new powers or discover new magic, the fundamentals of the show simply changed and it made very little sense. I don't mind tense kill switches in cases like that, but they could've at least kept consistency in the process. They also could've let literally anyone else kill the Night King, someone who deserved that kill, like maybe... Theon? He was right there, the scene was writing itself, it would've been perfect. But alas, can't change what's already been written. Damn you, GoT, you fucked up.

It was interesting to see a core group literally go from what can be considered the beginning of life (returning to earth) to the end of it (ascension). I think it was based around how humans react to different facets of humanity; whether it be something primitive like war/classism, something scientific such as AI, or something spiritual such as ascension. I rewatched the show cause the first time, I couldn’t really take in everything that was happening and honestly, you really didn’t have time to react to anything going on. One thing happens and all of a sudden, “Oop here’s this other thing” I clearly remember feeling so out of it finishing season 3 cause it was so intense for me. trying to take in the rollercoaster that was the show. After the first rewatch, it finally made me think about how crazy going from 100 kids surviving to only 4 of the kids having to fight off a cult leader is. It’s clear the writers were running out of ideas but found a way to make it work because the whole point of the show is survival and doing what needs to be done for the people you love. I watched someone watch only the first and last episode of the 100 and it really solidified it for me. Imagine watching the first episode of the series about a group of kids trying to survive then watch the last episode and hearing the line “take out her mind drive” LIKE WHAT?!

That first season isn't that great. Seasons 2-4 is where the good stuff is at, so I would try and get to season two before making up your mind. Season 5 is decent ending, but not many of us consider seasons 6-7 cannon. They have their enjoyable moments, but it totally goes out like game of thrones.

To be fair the show kinda found its footing by season 2 onwards and developed a somewhat dark post apocalyptic survival tone, dropped most of the teen drama cliches and tropes , tropes and subverted cw standards. Season 2-4 was the peak of the show and the show would've stayed great if the writers played their cards right in the later seasons.

@@austinbrowder3393 Finn kills a bunch of grounders in episode 5. The grounders now threaten to exterminate the entire rest of the people from orbit in retaliation for this. The people in Mount Weather have been kidnapping and draining the blood from grounders for generations. So naturally, at the last minute, Lexa chooses to betray her new allies, and betray Clarke who she professed to have romantic feelings towards, in order to avoid fighting Mount Weather. What?! Please walk me through this... The grounders are firmly established as vengeful. Then in the 11th hour their "leader" chooses NOT to seek revenge or justice against Mount Weather for decades of hostility and violence because of why exactly? So Mount Weather gave some of their people back? So? So what?! They have been kidnapping their people for generations, for decades. They have killed hundreds, perhaps thousands, of grounders. Politically the grounders are taking a big risk that the people from the Ark won't take revenge for this betrayal, a betrayal which very possibly could end with all of them dying. They are taking an enormous risk that Mount Weather, *which has never before been friendly to the grounders and which if they win will be considerably more powerful* will somehow become friendly to the grounders now, for no reason. Politically it's insane! Literally no matter what happens whoever wins whether its the Ark or Mount Weather they will be hostile to the grounders because to the Ark the grounders have proven themselves faithless curs, and to Mount Weather they've been enemies for generations already! Once again, it's totally out of character to avoid taking revenge on Mount Weather considering what already happened with Finn. It's insane that Lexa would have power to pull a stunt like this without her own people revolting against her IMMEDIATELY. It's insane that every single grounder would not be salivating over the thought of revenge on the people from the mountain who have been kidnapping, killing, and terrorizing them for as long as any of them can remember. It's insane for Lexa personally due to her supposed relationship with Clarke. The only reason that the people in Mount Weather even die is because the original plan that would have made it possible for them to survive was shot all to hell by the grounders betrayal. It's a plot contrivance in the worst possible way. It's insane, it's against character, it's against established world building, it's against established plot. It literally only happens in order to reduce the size of the cast so that a new batch of characters can be ushered in for season 3. When I watched this I was so mad I had to get through these episodes over the course of multiple sessions because I could only stand to watch ten or fifteen minutes at a time.

Dragon ball did this to the first part Dragon ball was goku as a 13-15 year old kid that grew up in the mountains fighting martial artists and Soldiers for a long time. the power creep was understandable going up by more skilled fighters with more experience and better trained and better equipped soldiers. It wasn't until the king Piccolo saga did things get out of hand with the power levels almost double. Then when dragon ball z started the power levels went from barely being able to destroy a arena to easily destroying citys to barely destroying planet to no effort at all to destroy planets and that was the first 3 sagas in z.

The 100 is my all-time favourite show, but it left me feeling confused. Many questions unanswered and it gave me just an overall "wait what now" kind of mindset throughout the show because too many things just crossed over its initial plot. I read the books and let me tell you, I would've LOVED to see it as a tv show. The thing that bugged me the most was that the show went from Post-Apocalyptic Survival, to literally Sci-fi Fantasy, unlike the books that kept it consistent BUT had new things that didn't overshoot its overall plot. Don't get me wrong, I still love this show and I've followed it through its years and seeing the characters grow and end like that was kind of a relief.

I personally would have liked The 100 much more if they went with a "rebuild civilization" approach. The Arc could have been the start of a new city, Polis could have become a centre of technology and trade, tondc could have been rebuilt to become Washington again. If done right they could have done something like the Fallout series were there were actually other people who lived beyond the region where humans emerged from again. Then there could have been a war and conflict until it gets resolved and a new America is born. Instead, they decided to nuke everything.

The AI made perfect sense. You just didnt watch the show. The AI (ALIE) was created by Becca Franco. Becca Franco was the top scientist of her time. She created Cryo-Sleep, Nightblood, and all the other super high tech we see. ALIE was created to make like better for everyone. But she figured the problem was too many people. ALIE launched the nukes that ended earth trying to make it better but she didnt understand human feelings. So when Jaha discovers the lab (After a long journey searching) He bring back the chips to his Camp. He was the Leader in space so his following is still large. The chip removes all pain and death. When you die you live in "the city of light" . The problem was she was erasing the bad memories to remove pain. So people wont remember their kid that died, etc. After not enough people took it, she made everyone take it by force by controlling the ones who already took it. I wont explain the MAGICAL LEVER because its just one huge spoiler. But it all makes perfect scientific sense.

If I recall the Show started before the first book finished. The show presented a lot of repeating themes for humanity. The ending at season 7 wrapped everything up pretty nicely. It basically showed no matter how much humanity advanced they'd repeat the same mistakes. The power escalation seems like it was that way because it showed no matter how advanced humanity became they still made the same mistakes. I feel like this show was very strong for the CW considering it had themes that were more mature than the target audience of the entire network.
