I've read this book several times, so of course YT read my mind and pointed me to this review . . . which is very well done . . . and makes me want to read this book again. It is so good! The two Skroderiders (plants on wheels) are incredible characters. But I also like many of the Tines-the native creatures on what you called "the primitive world." The process Vinge leads the reader through, of understanding, through precisely calibrated clues, just what kind of creatures these are, is one of the best features of the book. When you read the first few hints, you don't know what to think. "Scriber Jaqueramaphan had been all over, mindlessly running around. He'd collect in twos or threes and execute some jape that made even the dour Tyrathect laugh." -What? He'd collect in twos and threes? -But you keep going, and slowly you get it. This book is so good!!

lol. I completely agree with the either a 3/5 or a 5/5. I was just so lost picturing what was happening.

There were times I was totally on board and times I was totally lost for sure.

"A Fire Upon the Deep" is my alltime favorite. I love that old usenet style of messages. There is a lot to discover in this book, especally if you are into SF and IT. SF turned to 11

Very enjoyable book review! At age 73 I find I cannot stick with a thick book but this one sounds intriguing. I am currently reading one of my favorite SF novels, More than Human, by SF Grandmaster Theodore Sturgeon. Written in 1953 the story is still fresh and I am reading it again after a forty year gap. Again, thanks for the review!

I read a short story by Ted Sturgeon decades ago and can't remember the title. In it people had to "earn" their way to be able to talk. One cashier pointed to her "Shut up" button on her lapel. A guy getting examined by doc had his shirt off, revealing a tat that said: "Let's all get together and (I can't write it, but it's what the colonists did 247 years ago)." Only Sturgeon wrote the whole thing out, I've paraquoted him. Anyway, then the doc asked his patient, "Do you really feel that way?" No response, but I mean it's a tattoo. Hello. Also, to "earn" your right to talk, you had to get three recommends by three already approved talkers. Or something like that. So does that short ring a bell?

Best Prologue in sci-fi hands down. Hooked me right away.

I just happened to see this review. I was captivated the moment I started reading it after it was published and read it a couple times(as well as buying used copies and then leaving them out in places where others might see them). It is a big big book but it has to be big to hold all the things going on in it. One of these days I need to talk with Audio and get the readings I bought working again.

I want to reread it in the future. I feel like I have a better handle on the genre and I'm excited to see how much I learn the second go around.

This was one of my first sci-fi’s too. I read a lot after-never found one as good, but the others did help me understand this one better when I came back to it. I think what I liked best about this book was that it was beautifully written. It reminded me a lot of fairy tales.

Trees on wheels? Okay, sold. Adding this to my tbr. Also, I love your kitty assistant.

And my favorite scifi is probably either Sphere by Michael Crichton or Contact by Carl Sagan, but I'm currently reading The Parable of the Sower and it may take the cake by the end. I also love everything scifi I've read by Ursula le Guin. I know you didn't like something by her recently, but I recommend checking out The Dispossessed or Lathe of Heaven if you want some of her scifi :)

One of my favorite sci fi novels. Loved the zones of thought in general, didn't realize why some characters were doing things until I remembered about the zones.

I've got a soft spot for Blueshell, but Amdi and Jefri take the cake for cutest characters of the book for me. I enjoyed this book so much, hopefully someday a movie studio picks it up. The world deserves to see potted plants flying starships and dogs firing cannons on the big screen.

I LOVED Amdi and Jefri as well. I tried to stay away from then in my review though since the reader is given only bits and pieces of Amdi's species is at the beginning. I would 100% watch this movie!!

There is more in this story. There are two other books in the "Zones of Thought" trilogy. - The third book I can never find in Mass Market Paperback, I usually only see listings for it in Hardcover.

the other more famous book is Deepness in the sky, set in the same universe, but that's about it. The two novels don't interact at all with each other. The 3rd book is Children of the sky. I too had a heck of a time trying to obtain it. finally gave up and bought it used. It's still on my to-read shelf, but I will read it this year! working my way through the last of the published Vorkosigan books from Lois McMaster Bujold, in the 2nd-to-last book now (cryoburn), then Gentleman Jole & red queen, then I'm not sure what I'm reading next...

This is the best book review that I have ever watched

The book makes a lot more sense if you live up in the Transcend. I loved the book and have reread it several times, but when discussing the book with other experienced SF readers, they just did not get the whole Zones thing and that was the most important concept to make the book make sense.

Yeah I could understand people putting this down if they didn't really grasp the concept of the zones. It was hard to get through even though I did understand it, but the emotional payoff at the end made it all worth it.

Somebody into sci Fi would give it above a 9/10.

I'm getting more and more into sci-fi over the last few years. This is a truly wonderful book and I can't deny its amazingness. I think personally its a little too dense for my reading style but I still love it.

If you're into Sci-fi its definitely worth checking out. I wish I had read it a little later in my sci-fi "journey" because I was still pretty new to the genre. I may end up rereading it thought.

I really like Peter F. Hamilton's Pandora's Star, but it's big, and also a 2 book series. Although I think the first book is better.

The review style of category breakdown and points is really cool. This one is a book that I have a personal affinity for, and a notable curiosity in its experience for others. And I really enjoyed audiovisualing (is there a better word for that? Seehearing?) you share your experience with it. Best of luck with the channel, your goals, and your journey. "Let me know what your favorite scifi is down below" I'd say my current favorite is Neuromancer. But that notably is very much bias weighted toward my current preference for "concept exploration" and "fuel for personal thought development". I clicked on it because this book is one that I am curious to hear others (notably various demographics) impressions of it. @@sabrielsbell Keep up the good work. I don't know what your goals are for the channel, but I hope they are lining up with your experiences with the channel. Neuromancer is a kinda unorthodox book. For most readers its a "fish out of water" experience: like being thrown into an unfamiliar and exotic foreign land. It has a core storyline (albeit a fairly cold one), but it's so crowded with other things, that for many (especially for early readings) those other noises are just taken as techno-babble. Buried in all that is a very deep and wide ranging dive into the human race's near-term futurism and many, many other things besides. And of course it also now has its legacy role as an influencer in scifi, popular culture, and beyond. An odd mix.

@@sabrielsbell I'm an old hand at SF. In my youth it was Asimov and Bradbury, then on to Herbert, Robinson, Brin, Bedford, Heinlein and some others. Cyberpunk ruined the genre for me for a long, long time. Just coming back to it in the past few years.

what can you say about a book where the most interesting character is a potted plant that rides around in a little buggy.

Your rating system has given me something to think about. I think Mr. Vinge’s book manages to be a 5-star story without, say, very much lore. So I feel that rating it on lore is a bit misleading. However, I know some people read just for lore. So is it more complete to reflect the lack of lore in the overall rating?

just finished this book and I thought the whole thing could have been about the humans on tines world. some of the space stuff did drag a bit,

This book was a huge waste of time. I was promised superintelligences but I got medieval dog societies.
