Bryan, Thanks for the advice. I also recommend Gary at Voice of Music. He really knows his stuff and his prices are reasonable. He told me he loves what he does, which goes a long way with me.

Thanks for the sound advice Mr. Radiotvphononut (no pun intended). I always enjoy your videos on vintage electronics (as well as the occasional rants). Keep up the good work. :-)

This stuff is getting very long in the tooth, so we have to expect _some_ problems. But today, everything is junk. I replaced some knobs in my kitchen, the spigot (kitchen and bathroom) and bathroom knobs and all of them had to be rebuilt in less than 10 years! Even the damn kitchen sink just isn't make the way they used to make stuff. Same for gas appliances, electric appliances, bedding etc. Don't even get me started on the precipitous drop in computer quality!

I used to take the cartridges apart and fix them myself. Usually the leads that go into cerimics lose contact with the amplifier leads. Most of the times I'll clean the copper contacts and it will fix it. I usually have to glue the cartridge back together. Of course, most cartridges are nearly impossible to take apart. I've been lucky.

I don't know how old you are but I am 50 years old and yes I am old enough to remember when Richard Dawson hosted the family feud also and yes I agree with you about the difference between the show then and now and it was much better than than it is now!!!

Thanks for explaining the cost of the needed parts. I didn't really understand you asking $75 for these old record players, but I sure do now! Did you know that Richard Dawson met his 2nd wife Gretchen Johnson in 1981 as a contestant on the Feud? They married 10 yrs later in 1991 & they had a daughter in 1990 named Shannon. Because she asked him to stop smoking & to stop kissing the females on the Feud because she only wanted him to kiss her mama; he honored both of those requests! He'd smoked 4 packs a day for decades.

The only thing I can think of to fix off size cartridges is to 3D print a special bracket. I would have no idea how much the equipment would cost for that. I imagine that cost is coming down though.

crystal cartridges here in the u.k are pricey around £30 upwards, like you i bought dead ones many times before, but you get the volume from crystal compared to ceramic in the old 50s.60s players

FET preamp and a Sanyo crystal cart and I think there's an adapter mount on thing a verse you can 3D print if you have a buddy with a printer. Simple easy and cheap way to fix this thing. These need to be saved and they are worlds better than some of the junk I see new.

Hi, I'm trying to restore an Olympic 412 suitcase type radio/record player. I think it is from the late 50s. It has a BSR record changer with a Ful-fi TC8H cart in it. I don't yet know the condition of the cart but am assuming it is a goner. Would you recommend a modern cart that would replace this one? Thanks for any advice.

I got burnt on a $45 cart from stereoneedleslady a few years back. It turned out to be a Chinese repro of a Telefunken cart and chewed through the first record I played. Their reply was "that's the nature of stereo cartridges." I believe needledaddy is the same seller since I'm now blocked from buying from him too.

I know nothing about record players. I bought a Silverton one tube wonder as u say and I need a needle. The cartridge seems to be trying to do something but the needle is gone. Is it a crystal cartridge on these old 60s Silverton and can a person still just buy a needle for the cartridge? I put one in that came out of another player but it broke because I was screwing around trying to get the player loaded.

Tried getting a good Astatic 13T cartridge (stereo version of an 89T) off eBay when I first purchased a Zenith stereophonic record player. After paying good money for 3 or 4 of them I finally gave up, and put a new P228 cartridge from VM in. Pretty sure most of what I was getting was estate sale junk drawer finds, and were probably used needles that were changed out 40+ years ago, and put back into an original case.

Good 13T's are basically non-existent and they have not been made in decades. They were common in stereo classroom record players; but, when they stopped being made, manufacturers switched to using either Tetrad or Varco cartridges. I usually replace them with a P228 cartridge.

@@radiotvphononut , wondering if 50s and 60s vintage crystal cartridges were actually ceramic/piezo technology or if they were actual crystals, Rochelle salt or similar like were used in old crystal mics. The actual crystals are fragile and subject to moisture degradation.

There's got to be a way to build your own high output magnetic pickup using a gutted out bad cartridge housing with magnet wire and small neodymium magnets. It will never go bad again. Mmmm thinking .. I'll have to experiment. Meanwhile I just use a P-132D and my own Darlington preamp circuit with a mid scoop to bring out the bass. It has a 1meg input base to emitter with a 10meg pull up collector to bass and 100k collector output impedance and has a wide range of operating voltage. The mid scoop is a 4.7k resistor and .047uf in series and connected across the base emitter. I have that circuit on a Philco model 48-1286 and it sounds great its operating on 18volts DC but with its 100k collector resistor I bet it can take much higher voltage if necessary. It uses two nte 199 low noise preamp transistors wired darlington. How do I send a photo of my schematic. I bet it will make a cheap cartridge from a snot box sound good

A very informative video, well done. And I will not buy a crystal cartridge on ebay for the reasons you stated---most of those sellers have no idea what kind of condition it's in. Gary at VM is my go-to guy. And lastly, thank you for getting me into 78's--I only have about 30 of them right now, but I enjoy them very much

If it were me working on this player, before I did ANYTHING else, I would reroute that power cord through a hole drilled in the back wall of the box(case) below one of the hinges for the lid. Where that power cord emerges as seen here is UTTERLY DISGUSTING AND OBSCENELY INCOMPETENT!

On the little kiddy and low value portable record players, I just use the “cheapo” red Crosley type cartridges and either boost the amp to make up for the low voltage cartridge or just live with the lower volume. You can buy them on flea bay for a buck or so apiece, directly from Trump’s favorite country! Most of these little players just are not worth the price of the original NOS or repo cartridges. Most of the time they can just be glued into the arm with some clear chalk so if some “audiophile” future owner ever wants to restore the original cart, they can ... but likely that will never happen.

I've got a red Concert Hall kiddie player from the '70's and I'm probably going to put one of those cheap cartridges in it. The original is a 3V crystal cartridge; but, I'm going to put whatever I can get the cheapest and I have a couple of those cheap cartridges from China. It will have much lower volume; but, so be it. I'm not going "all out" on a $10 record player.

No point in my opinion for these old tables! It's easier to play mp3s (probably sound better than these things)! The point of LP's these days is to get better quality than compressed digital, you can only do that with a top quality table! It's just my opinion, man, please don't get pissed at me!

Who was the shit-head who designed this player with the power cord coming out where it does? That is UTTER RUBBISH! The power cord should emerge from the rear of the player with a notch cut in the wall of the case in which the cord sits so it can't foul the record as it plays like this one can, and will.
