A Father Does Something Drastic When His Family Become Strangers To Him // Viddsee.com

Фильм және анимация

"Closer Apart" is a heartwarming short film that highlights the importance of cherishing familial ties through a subtle illustration of our inability to value the little things and people around us in the face of modernity.
As we unravel the story of a father’s increasing drift from his family, ‘Closer Apart’ reveals itself to be an authentic record of the joys, heartaches and frustrations of an ordinary Singaporean family.

    Yeah, that was my first thought. Why are you taking your butts out there looking, hounding the police, something? It would have been one thing if he died (which is what you're protraying here). Or are you that much out of touch that all it took for him to not physically be there for you to jump on that thought? Until I heard otherwise, I would be searching

    That's why we should always take care of our parents, elders, grandparents even in small things, whether they did something bad or good.. they didnt leave nor forget us when we are still small.. we shouldn't forsake them when they're old.. There is no happiness without our parents. They were the backbone of the family especially if the father fulfilled his duties during his early days to give comfort for the family. It would be nice if he is treated well when he is now old. Having like him is a luck to a family. He is not like other father's who spend his earnings to himself, or go gambling, spend for other vices like liquors and paid women.

    This may be just a short film but it does happen in real life more than we would like to admit. People do change....even your closest loved ones...those who you initially thought were the only people in this world that really matters to you. Sometimes our own loved ones can hurt us more than anyone else with small gestures, like in the scene when the big bowl of soup was placed directly in from of the father thus restricting him from easy reach to the other dishes. Their intention may be good towards the little girl but, in doing so, they neglect the feelings of the father. It makes him feels as if he is not an equally significant member of the family (regardless of whether he has a "longer hand" or not than the girl, as the wife had so insensitively said). It is not so much about the food but to the fact that no one else at the table (except for the little girl herself) had shown concern that the father may have difficultly too in reaching the other dishes, if the bowl of soup was placed directly in front of him.For us Chinese, the act of eating has a more profound meaning than just for eating sake. It can be used to symbolize how we feel about the other person or how concern we are to his/her welfare. That's why we Chinese, at times, when we meet someone who are close to us, instead of saying "hello", we asked him " li chiak par buay" (Have you eaten yet ?). So, the fact that all the adult family members at the reunion dinner table were totally oblivious that he may not enjoy the dinner with that bowl of soup right in front of him, speaks volume to the father. I can feel his pain. Don't really like the ending as it was rather sad. But I hope (if this is in real life) that the father does manage to find a better and happier life for himself elsewhere in his twilight years. That last sentence that he had said, when he was leaving home, brought a tear to the eyes and a pain to the heart......" I would rather leave than stay in a place that does not belong to me anymore and start again outside to complete the last stage of the journey in my Life ".

    It's sad that that's exactly how I felt with my group of friends. We were BFFs for 5 years. In 11th grade, I didn't feel like I belonged anymore and did exactly what the the dad did: left. I had a similar thought process too. :(

    leaving friends is not the same as leaving your family.... i do think the dad deserve some more respect, but leaving the family for good is too extreme. at least try to talk things out with them and i think you should have tried that with your friends too. when he leave without giving his family a chance, he is basically leaving no chance for himself to return too.

    Ken Yap True but at a point we all need to live our own lives, however, we should still keep in touch with family. We should especially treasure our parents as they are getting older and may not be around much longer. I am glad that I knew that at a young age so cherished and took care of my parents as much I could while they were still around. I always remind others to do the same or else they will regret it.

  • @skychaos87

    @skychaos87

    Agreed, its important to treasure and cherish your parents. But somehow, things seldom end up the way we want. Personally i think the knowledge to effectively convey your feelings is more important. In this video, i see that both sides do love each other but at the same time are torn apart by ineffective communication. The kids and wife should show more appreciation by giving more affection and acknowledgement while the dad should try to speak his feelings instead of abandoning the family. Regardless, the message of the video is about showing love and concern to your parents and more people got that positively. However, there are quite a few who got stunned by the extreme choice at the end. Even OP went through that phase. So i thought i'd share a different and what i thought a more positive solution of looking at it. I believe respect begins from communication, people can be motivated by videos like this but many won't be able to do a thing if they aren't going to convey their feelings and thoughts effectively.

    Yes it is true. If your family dont show gratitude or value you. Then it is better to leave than to be treated badly or ignored. The Vedas says it is time to prepare for your next life. Well taken movie.

    Unfortunately, it's not just a Singapore problem but worldwide. People, if not physically, mentally checking out because they feel they no longer belong. It's sad how societies everywhere have narrowed their scope instead of broadening it towards their fellow human being. And the deepest pain comes from when it's your family!!!

    This short film was really well done. A feel minor problems with it tho, in some scenes, such as 5:44, there was no white balancing, resulting in a sudden change in color and making the scene look warmer. The scene where the wife was consoling the husband had continuity errors, the husband seemingly stopped crying in what I assume to be the master shot, and continues crying in the medium close up shot. However, the audio was great, and most of the other cinematography of the short film was alright to me. I liked the narrative, and not to mention the acting as well as the moral behind the story, that is to appreciate your loved-ones. Probably one of my personal favorite short films from Singapore, and having Henry Thia in the cast just made it so much better!
