Yes, I know I missed the Duramax and should have mentioned it, but it wasn't the point of the video. :) 2. Q: Why didn't you mention the S-10? A: I already had a 26 min video and didn't want to go off on tangents with the Chevy LUV, S-10, etc., but keep it focused on the 1500-series trucks. I'll be doing an S-10 video in the future! 3. Q. Why didn't you talk about the Cadillac EXT? A: See the answer above, as well as why I didn't go into the El Camino or any of the GMC variants of these platforms. This was about Chevy, and I was avoiding those branches... not only for time, but also to leave space for future video ideas.

I’ve been a Chevy guy all my life. I had a 1973 Blazer, a 1978 Blazer, 2 1974 Pickups and even a 1971 Van. Currently I have a 1984 3/4 Ton Scottsdale, a 1998 K2500HD (C6P Chassis) and a 2012 Silverado Crewcab. All the pickups are 4x4 except one of the 74s. They all had 350s/ 5.7 except the 2012. My first car when I was 16 in 1969 was a 63 Impala Supersport with a 327. The girl I took on my first date in that car is sitting next to me now.

Yep my father had bought a 53 but it was pretty rusted out so he just pulled the 283 the previous owner had dropped in and gifted the remaining shell to his friend, fast forward a couple years my older sister was searching on Craigslist and found a beautiful 41 pickup, my father drove to Austin Tx where the guy had it and talked him down from 18k to 13.5k straight cash since the guy was going through a divorce if I remember correctly, the guy had a couple early year c3 corvette’s and he didn’t want to let em go. Sat in our garage for 10 years since my Mother had divorced my Father and me and him are finally getting to enjoy it. Gets thumbs up everywhere she goes and in my opinion is more unique and definitely rare than the advanced design pickups. Has a torqy 400 sbc and a th350 but I definitely want to buy a stovebolt 6cyl to tinker with.

Great video as always Jon! I love Chevy/GMC trucks and always have. My dad was a big Ford guy earlier in life but after owning several GMC Caballeros (the GMC version of the El Camino for those unfamiliar) and an '85 K20 that he bought as an offroad toy, he made the full switch to Chevy/GM trucks in 1990 when he bought his fully loaded '90 GMC Sierra C1500 SLE with the 5.7 350 TBI V8. Its his favorite truck of all time and still owns it, it currently has over 660k mi on the original, untouched, non-rebuilt engine. That truck is truly a symbol of how tough, reliable and long lasting these GM trucks are and have been over the years. He also owned a 2000 Sierra SLT 5.3 that i bought from him when he purchased his new '16 Sierra Denali. We also used Chevy trucks for business when he owned his auto/commercial battery shop, owning both a '91 C1500 350 V8 truck as well as a '95 C1500 350 V8 truck. Both were great units with both being worked hard every day of their lives. We let the '95 go with almost 400k mi when he sold the business and the '91 was stolen and never recovered unfortunately. He also owned a '96 K2500 7.4 454 Z71 truck that I spent a lot of time using when learning to drive. All of the trucks i mentioned above were super depenadable, rugged, comfortable and even economic on gas for full size truck (except the '96 k2500 454 truck that averaged 10mpg lol) and are all examples of why i love Chevy/GM trucks and believe that they are truly the Longest Lasting, Most Dependable Trucks on the Road.

Hey Jon, the Avalanche was also used to create the Cadillac Escalade EXT. This truck was in production from 2001-2006.

Yes I know... I think in the video I worded it as "only a Chevy offering". Specifically I was trying to emphasize it wasn't ported over as a GMC product, but in hindsight (and since 2 of you so far pointed out the EXT) I should have added a couple of words that Caddy had a version. :) (and it was available through 2013 surprisingly!)

I also had a 1999 Tahoe Z-71, with the last year 5.7L Vortec. I drove it for over 17 years, rarely anything broke, but when it did the replacement part was always $19.99 on the shelf at AutoZone, didn't matter what the part was, always $19.99 on the shelf!❤

GMT 800's will always have my heart. I plan to restore a 1500HD to better than factory new after I get my house paid off.

My gmt800 k2500 6.0, 4.10 suburban is one of my best purchase ever. It tows 9000 lb most of my usage and i sleep in the back when i go camping. Never get stuck in dirt with 4x4.

I've got a 93 K1500 Suburban - love that thing, also a 1995 Silverado, the interior "upgrade" was the beginning of the end IMO - plastic everywhere! Both the 5.7 4L60e and original, they really thought these through, it is sad so many were destroyed by 'cash for clunkers' ....

I’ve owned a 99 Z71 Chevy Tahoe for a couple months now and it’s a road eater 100%. I get lots of good looks do haha. Not to mention the size is awesome and how easy it is to do maintenance on. It’s a joy to work on VS my parents new Subaru’s. My only complaint is it’s a gas pig 😂

I'm not a fan of the 95 and up interiors either. Very cheap feeling. Although the interiors before 95 had a lot of plastic too. I think the 80s plastic was better and a little less cheap. Even though a lot of the dash and everything else was plastic, at least the door handles were still metal. The window cranks were metal as well. All of that became cheap plastic in 95.

@0:14 that OBS single cab/short bed is gorgeous and a proper truck. It’s also nice to see an OBS with its original wheels instead of wheels taken from a later 99+ Silverado like you tend to see on so many of these OBS trucks nowadays. I especially hate when I see an OBS that originally had steelies with the center chrome cap where those wheels have been replaced with aluminum wheels from a 99+ Silverado, I greatly prefer the stock look.

The 1990-1993 Chevrolet 454SS pickup was the most impressive model of the last C/K platform.

I still miss my '92 C10 Silverado, complete with red velour interior. Sold it in 2018 to someone that needed a vehicle for work. Regretted it immediately.

Great video. I miss the trucks of the 90s and 2000s so much. It seems like modern trucks aren't made to be treated as trucks anymore and are filled with dumb gimmicks to justify the crazy price increase. Haven driven a few new Silverados and Colorados at work, GM especially seems really guilty of this and I prefer my 2010 F-150 over them. I'm so tired of crew cab luxury trucks, but that seems to be all you ever see at dealers. I really wish someone would make an affordable "back to basics" truck without all the unnecessary crap. Cut the buggy touch screens, camera arrays, leather seats, digital gauge clusters, tailgate gimmicks, rear seat entertainment, etc and make something that'll actually last!

GM still makes extended cab and single cab trucks. If you get a W/T or Custom trim you still get (essentially) the 2014 interior. No leather interior or digital guage cluster. No tailgate gimmicks or rear sear entertainment. You can't get rid of the cameras or touch screens because of federal safety standards so you can blame the govt on that one. But guess what, you can go buy that truck right now for less then $40,000 and dealers don't really stock them because they don't sell. Consumers drive demand and consumers want their truck to have modern luxuries. I bought my 2023 Sierra without a leather interior but I would not have purchased the PRO model, I went with the Elevation because it had the 'luxury" items that I wanted in my vehicle for the least amount of money. Sticker was $59,000 and with dealer markdown and factory incentives I got it for $42,000 plus tax and tags. That's affordable in my books for 2023 plus I get heated seats, full digital display, and the pro tailgate which works good for me getting into the bed which I will admit is too high for purely styling reasons.

I have four late 90's Chevy OBS trucks. They are solid and easy to work on. I am in the middle of rebuilding a 5.7 vortec for my 99 Surburban.

Too brief a history for sure. You did a great job. I've only had two pickups my entire life, Chevys. Still have both of them. 1962 C10 235 3 speed I've had for 40 years. 1997 K1500 Z71 I've had for 23 years. Keep up the good work and good luck with your channel.

Former Ford guy here, switched in 2018 to a Chevy 1500 to replace my 18 year old F-150. What a disappointment, traded that off for a 2500HD , says something that I had to go to a 3/4 ton Chevy to tow as well as my old 1/2 ton Ford. All in all I do like it better, just wish mfr's would give us the long lasting offerings that we used to have available. Thanks again for all your research and work to produce these history videos. You’re telling us that a 2000 F-150 towed better than a 2018 Silverado 1500? I don’t buy it. At best, your 2000 F150 would have had that boat anchor of an engine known as the 5.4 2 valve, which was weak for its day and is especially weak compared to more modern engines. Even the base 2018 Chevy engine would have been the 285hp/305lb-ft 4.3 V6 with a six-speed auto, which is 25 more horsepower and 40lb-ft less torque than the aforementioned 5.4, not to mention 50% more gears in the automatic transmission to help keep it in its its powerband… but more likely you had the 5.3 with 355hp and 383lb-ft, which is 95 more horsepower and 38 more lb-ft, in addition to also having two more gears than your Ford had to help keep it in its powerband. The Triton engines were dogs, Chevy had far and away better V8’s during that era and that’s well known. The Coyote is a much better and more competitive V8, though Ford sells the majority of their F150’s equipped with some variant of the Ecoboost twin turbo V6’s nowadays.

@@phantom0456Has less to do with engine power and more to do with weight, braking and drivetrain. Newer trucks are packed with more features making them worse for towing/hauling. They are based around fuel efficiency as they are increasingly being used as family haulers. Newer trucks are just too heavy for the disproportionate increase in power over the years.

@@phantom0456You Chevy guys make me laugh. The 5.3 was a dog in 2001 as well. They just respond well to modifications. The biggest complaint about AFM is it trying to cut fuel and upshift to early. It doesn’t work well while towing not only that the 6l80e is junk

@@waterloo123100 I had both of them, a 2008 5.4 ford & 2003 5.3 Chevy. I’m here to tell you that 5.4 ford was a dog compared to the 5.3 Chevy. One more thing you’re totally wrong about as well, an 80E transmission whether it be a 4L80E or 6L80E is about as good of a transmission as you can get. I’m pretty certain you’re actually talking about a 60E transmission, which itself isn’t a bad transmission if you don’t try to pull the guts out of it !!

There was a Cadillac version of the avalanche, the ext I believe.

4:00, that tip is crazy useful! Even back then with rudimentary tools they were careful with oil thickness!

My 05 all aluminum 5.3 extended cab was one of the best trucks around. Miss that thing.

GMT-800 is the best truck ever made. The literal only issues I've seen are electrical or the body rusts to sht. Luckily, i live in Florida so no road salt, my 06' has about 204k on the Odo and only major things I've had to fix besides new tires and oil has been a radiator that I popped by over-revving the dog piss out of it and new headlights cause they were oxidized lol.

Glad you like them! This one was honestly harder than the Ford Truck one I did. The information was more spread out, with big holes in it, and when putting the video itself together Ford has far, FAR more information, pictures, brochures, etc. on old models. GM is like "eh, here's 3 and we're going to stop at 1980. Figure it out"

My man! that was awesome! I love my 2023 LT 1500 with its nutty, and very capable, 310hp and 430 #/ft I deeply miss my 87 short-wide....RIP, my 90 Z71 step side - black with red interior, and *still loving my 02 1500 long bed ext-cab WT and my 08 Tahoe LT. I think that I might be a chevy guy.

The third generation C/K series "square bodies" are my favorite. The only models they stopped producing in 1987 were the half ton & three quarter ton plain cab pickups. But the one ton plain cab pickups on the other hand were still in production up through 1989, & same with the rest of the models except they were produced up through 1991 like you said. The reason why the C/K series were renamed R/V series in 1987 was to make a distinction between the square body models & the upcoming fourth generation C/K series pickups for the 1988 model year because both of those body designs were going to be in production at the same time which lasted up through 1991. By the way the nick name for the fourth generation C/K series pickups are OBSs "Old Body Style". I don't know why they nick named them that.

In my opinion the 2002 Chevy Silverado was the best truck ever easy to repair cheap parts and great performance.

3rd gen C/K was the first pickup to use the wind tunnel to measure aerodynamics in the design phase 1986 fuel injection became available with it becoming standard in ‘87 I daily a 2000 Silverado that’ll roll over 303k miles later this afternoon. After having owned and become experienced with various GM pickups from childhood on, I believe each generation had a certain character. A certain experience that was very particular to that particular model. Unfortunately, that spirit of Chevy truck died in 2013. The current Silverado isn’t so much a Chevy as it is simply ‘another truck.’ To better illustrate this point I’ll highlight some examples. 2009 2500 handled like a rock, great work truck, interior setup I thought was pretty car like but it more than made up for it by truly being a workhorse 2000 Silverado 1500 Ole faithful, not the fastest, not the slowest, reasonably easy for non GM mechanics to repair. It’s done everything I’ve asked of it. It’ll be around for a lot longer. 23 years old and still worth repairing. I replaced the factory carrier bearing and u joints last month. 1997 Sierra (yes technically GMC) step side 305 / 5 speed This is the truck I regret selling. Not the workhorse of a bigger truck and certainly not an SS but as a daily driver honestly one of the most fun vehicles I’ve owned. (I’ve owned over 25 from all 3 domestic as well as Toyota, Honda and Nissan) 1980-1987 C/K 10 Aside from the diesel these are probably the most ‘modern’ classic pickup you could hope to find. Stylistically, they have nearly everything a proper classic truck should yet they are commonly found with creature comforts like power steering, breaking, AC and a ride that can rival many trucks 30 years newer. Plus the aftermarket and support for these trucks is HUGE. Sure it takes some cash but what could be cooler than a 30 year truck with Bluetooth and heated leather seats?? 74-80 I set these aside from the later squares because they are more utilitarian in spirit and honestly these are my favorite. Sure you lose some features but nothing beats floor vents, round headlights and chestnut on the dash. Lastly, I’ll mention a ‘49 Chevy 3/4 ton. It’s not mine but belongs to a relative who has allowed me to drive it from time to time and holy cow, you want a true time capsule experience. You want to feel like a farmer from the ‘40s this is the truck for you. It’s about as far from a 2024 Silverado as you can get but trust me, it’s good for the soul. You’ll swear you’re at Indy even though you’re still under 50 mph. There’s nothing like it. You just can’t help but smile driving the little monster and listening to the stove bolt sing.

3rd generation ones are awesome. Amazing how they were in production for 19 years "1973 - 1991." 1987 was the last year for the half ton & three quarter ton plain cab pickups, & 1989 was the last year for the one ton plain cab pickups & medium duty series models. They were the last to have the base 3 speed manual on the column transmission & the half ton pickups were the last to only come in plain cabs. 1980 was both the last year for round shaped headlights & first year for square shaped headlights. The square shaped headlights came standard on models with the Silverado & Sierra Classic trim levels & optional on models with the other trim levels.

Avalanche was an incredible truck. I adore mine!!

GMT-400 are the best trucks ever built. They had the toughness of the square bodies with just enough creature comfort to be an improvement. Back before mangina gimmick trucks were a thing. Today I drove my 95 3/4 ton suburban literally through the roaring waters of Mobile bay during a bad storm. Everyone else turned around when the water got over the lugs. I pushed her all the way up over the hood with waves hitting my doors. Driving through driftwood and sea grass, jumped the median even. The ol 6.5 diesel just a rippin. 2 old Chevys is all this 20 year mechanic will rely on. Keep em tip top and refuse to progress. Heated seats and leather never got me home. And a camshaft eating 6.0 LS only ever hurt my feelings and my wallet. GMT400 FTW.

Good video, what I love is when a ford fan says well ford f series has been the best selling truck for the last (how many ever years) I always reply only because GM doesn’t combine the amount of GMC and Chevy trucks sold, if they did they technically outsell ford almost every year!

Even as a Aussie Ford fan. I love the Chev utes ( trucks )

Best trucks and vehicles I've ever owned have been an 07 Silverado Classic 1500 Z71 Ext cab LT and an 18 LTZ 1500 double cab 4x4 both 5.3s. 4 speed for the 07 6 for the 18. Never had luck with older vehicles went newer and of those 2 gens gmt800 and the K2XX the K2XX has been the best and most reliable truck I've ever owned. Gmt800s are solid yet have far to many interior flaws a bit slow and had a snappy 4 speed trans the 18 with the 6 speed just doesn't have. 18 is perfection and the height of Chevy trucks imo. Personally my least fav bodystyle ever is the 73 - early 90s and the 19 - current trucks... classic wise I think the 67 - 72 were the last really good ones and the height of classic design. If the gmt800s had more power, smoother shifts, and a better quality interior with far less squeaks rattles and better interior quality those very well could have been the best. 18 ltz so far has been 100% flawless for me. Appreciate the extra attention to details, toughness with luxury and overall quality newer has offered me older vehicles just haven't matched for me. Never had any afm or other issues ever with the 2018. It's like a much higher priced luxury vehicle just in a truck at a good value and does everything well.

This particular video had more ad breaks than I've ever seen in one of you videos. It was rather annoying. I was getting ad interruptions like every three minutes. Hard to stay engaged in the great content that you put out with so many ads.

Yes and no on the ads question. When you upload a video you can specify what ads you'd like to show - before the video, during the video, etc. You can also let YT pick the spots during the video or place suggested spots. I could, theoretically, put an ad 'marker' every minute of the video (I don't). They're just suggestions and YT shows ads (content) and frequency based on you and what they think is best for your experience. I appreciate you letting me know btw. I don't get any information on how many are being shown, what they may be, etc.

Love my Chevy trucks....and still have/drive my 57 1/2 stepside....59 1/2 Apache custom cab......77 1/2 cheyenne short bed and my newest ..a 95 k1500 stepside 5.7....The one Iet go 10-12 year ago I should had kept was a 71 short box 4x4 that had always been around this area of the county....I let it go cheap/BIG mistake!....Nice video.

I had a 1967 C-20 Camper Special with the panoramic rear window option. 327 with a 4 speed on the floor! Geared so low that you started out in 2nd during normal driving.

you should do a history vid on gm trucks/suvs in general. the gmt400 and especially gmt800 have such an interesting history with the escalade and denali stuff alone but I'm also a gmt800 supremacist so maybe it's my bias shining through lool suburban has a pretty rich history too I guess

I love my '57 task force 3200 (shortest of the three long bed options). There's nothing like an old 235 I6 with that oil bath air breather. I can literally stand in the engine bay on both sides of the engine.

I know its a simpl gloss over issue, but 64-66 c10s also had the 3 speed on the column with overdrive

1918 Came an Old Buggy and Horse Silverado and Now in 1930’s or 1940’s came like an Chevy Silverado to be different, Silverado becomes a C/K in 1960, and 1999 Becomes a Silverado to be the Truck named “Silverado”

Actually the Avalanche was not solely offered as a Chevrolet model. Cadillac also offered a version of the Avalanche as the Escalade EXT. A slight error in an otherwise good video.

Yes I know... I think in the video I worded it as "only a Chevy offering". Specifically I was trying to emphasize it wasn't ported over as a GMC product, but in hindsight (and since 2 of you so far pointed out the EXT) I should have added a couple of words that Caddy had a version. :)

2006 also had the SS Intimidator

2006 Silverado 3500HD Duramax with 973,000 miles. Still running strong! 2007 was the last year of good GM trucks. 2007.5 was all down hill from there

A few things you got wrong but whatever still good

The avalanche is a great truck had a 04 & 2013 never had issues I regret selling them both

Chevy were the first to put a diesel in a half-ton pickup. That didn't catch on until a few decades later!

When did Chevy make their 4 door 4x4 trucks K 1500?? I have one that I was told is a 97 but title refers to it as a 96?? Can't find any info anywhere

So to comment on your video, specifically the last point that you brought up about sales vs Ford, I have this to say. GM has historically had, and to this day still has, many problems. Because of axing Oldsmobile and folding Buick and Pontiac alongside GMC in an effort to streamline it's dealerships, it created a situation where, in 2010 when the government wrongly forced GM to kill Pontiac, GM had to support it's now Buick/GMC dealers with better products. This is IMHO, the time when GMC really started to outshine Chevrolet. GMC is now, in pop culture, a full on luxury brand with 40% of it's sales supported by it's Denali and Denali Ultimate line. Most of the foot traffic in the dealers is for GMC and even Buick is now just an afterthought, which is a shame because of any car I have ever driven in my entire life, I will maintain that Buick cars were the best. But they don't even make cars anymore sadly, just bland me-too SUVs. That being said, in 2014 (despite killing the Avalanche) the best Chevrolet 1500 of my Adult life came out. But, then they gave it a short refresh in 2016 which killed the styling, the only Silverado I liked from 2016-2018 was the 2018 100th Year package. From 2016-2021 GM just dropped the ball on everything. They killed Holden, dropping the Chevy SS (which I was lucky enough to own a 2014) botched the Cruze and Equinox/Terrain redesign, killed the Impala and LaCrosse, and neutered the Malibu. Then 2022 came and IMHO GM hit a grand slam with the Silverado/Sierra refresh. While the exterior design changes were nice, it was the interior that got me. I did something that I never thought I would do and I sold my 2014 Chevy SS (for a profit) and traded in my 2017 LaCrosse for a GMC Sierra 1500 Elevation, configured to my taste. And that's Chevy's problem right there, I haven't liked the design of the Silverado since the 2016 refresh compared to how the Sierra looks. The Sierra is just so much more premium looking even though the parts are the same for the most part.

Chevy, has been out sold by ford for 47 years because Chevy also has to compete with their partner GMC. Separate GMC and Chevy fighting eachother means you can’t get the Chevy dealer down to the price you want, try the GMC Dealer and a GMC. Where as with ford ending mercury trucks in the early 70s you want a ford product you have one option by a ford. If GM made a company GM Trucks, then offered the GMC and Chevrolet badges as branding and modeling packages. Fords would no longer hold the thrown. I personally think GM is very clever. I’ve met many Chevy owners who won’t kick the tires on a gmc and many gmc owners who won’t test drive a Chevy. Even though all that separates the two is badging. Ford up until the early 70s had Ford and Mercury trucks, and Dodge had Dodge and Fargo. Both ford and dodge ended their competing side brands because they couldn’t sell the same numbers as GMC and Chevy.

Hate that the silverado gen one 8.1l big block wasn't mentioned.

You forgot about the full size suvs they went square bodies all the way to 91 and then they were square. Then they were going to get the new body style until 2001

@ 23:37, The Chevy Avalanche had a Cadillac version called the Escalade EXT. You forgot to mention the Cadillac version of the Chevrolet Avalanche. Just a friendly FYI.

When GM started the GMT800 Silverado line after the GMT400 C/K was the beginning of the end of good trucks, too many bells and whistles with way too many computer modules controlling everything with too many failures and too expensive. GMT400 and older for me. 👍🏻

gmt800 and gmt900 (pre 2010) have proven to be the most reliable gm trucks you can buy. Interior materials suck but seat comfort is nice.

@@GMTfourhundred You’re 100% correct. I currently have 2 GMT 400’s, 1 GMT 800 & 1 GMT 900. I’ve had 6 GMT 400’s in total, 1 1988, 1 1993, 1 1995, 1 1996 & 2 1997’s. All but 1 of them were all bought brand new. They have by far been the most reliable trucks I’ve ever owned !!

Did General Motors ever have there own car model ? A General Motors Impala for example.

Not that I'm aware of? For a while in the 2000s (as I recall) they did put GM badges on models trying to build a corporate identity?

The bottom line is Ford sells More Trucks Than Chevrolet because the F-150 does not last long enough. People buy Chevrolets and drive them forever! There's no need to buy a new truck every 3 to 4 years if you buy a Silverado

They never dropped the 6.5 in 96 it continued on as the only diesel available after the 6.2 and before the duramax

GMT400 is best gm truck for practical work truck Advanced Series was art. GMT800 are okay but not like their 4th gen brothers

:18:04 the 4.8 v8 makes less lower and worse mileage. And the v6 makes way less power and gets barely better mileage
