    +Agent Bill Wilson Nope, they were just being human, judging things based on appearances. The true monster is frankenstein. He abandoned his creation because it didnt look like what he wanted it to be, promised it to make a lover for it and abandoned the task due to his fear and then went on to try to hunt it down and kill it.

    Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is actually one of the most important books ever written for both the gothic and sci-fi genres. It also had significant commentary on Feminism, as Shelley's mother was an active feminist, one of the very first of her kind. The being, or creature, is somewhat Ademic, but he also refers to himself as a fallen angel and even Satan himself. The book has interesting parallels with John Milton's Paradise Lost. However, he does in fact have no name at all.

    You realize, within the book, the monster decides to call himself Frankenstein after his creator. So yes, he genuinely is called Frankenstein.

    What version did you read? I keep hearing he calls himself Frankenstein or he's named Adam by Frankenstein, but I never saw that when I read Mary's version. At least I don't think so.

  • @lynchlychfeld

    @lynchlychfeld

    So I didn't explain it thoroughly because it's complicated and easier to just say he called himself Frankenstein, however we have this quote from the original novel "At length the thought of you crossed my mind. I learned from your papers that you were my father, my creator; and to whom could I apply with more fitness than to him who had given me life?" Which is clearly him accepting Frankenstein as his surname. Otherwise when he refers to himself while speaking to Victor he calls himself "the Adam of your [Victor's] labours" referring to Adam as God's first creation. -Also alluding to Proteus, Victor's second creation. Otherwise he is called Caliban, but that name was given to him by the man who sheltered him. So it's either Adam Frankenstein or Caliban Frankenstein, depending on your stance on what's in a name. Maybe Adam "Caliban" Frankenstein if he were a professional wrestler.- *Disclaimer* Yes the stuff at the end is taken from modern renditions including Penny Dreadful rofl. Everything excluding the parts where I start rambling about Proteus (and onwards) is legit though. Blame the cannabis.

    Wow, I never took his words that way. But it's great to have an explanation for why people think Frankenstein's monster has a name. In the book Frankenstein was always so disgusted with his creature he almost always called him a demon;and his creation hated him just as much for creating him, so he never took on his name. He admitted he was Frankenstein's creation,but was never interested in naming himself after the guy. He just wanted a wife, not a father. But I'm not at all saying you're wrong. I just never read it as that. Thank you for your input, it meant a lot to me. And I do mean that genuinely.

    Well, Mary Shelley never gives it a name, but the monster calls itself "the Adam of you labors" when talking to Frankenstein, if i remember correctly, and Adam refers, of course, to the first man in the bible, as Frankenstein created the monster. So I think it would be alright to call him "Adam", if one does want to ascribe a name to it.

    They are both right, depending on how you interpret the book. It is true that the monster is not given a name in the book, and that the author did not intend to give him one. It has been confirmed that the author's intention was to keep the creation nameless. However, the monster considers itself to be the creator's son and part of the family (as quoted below in Travis Iliades' comment) and thus it is not unreasonable to draw the conclusion that he considered himself to be a Frankenstein, either. Since the creature was intelligent, rather than big and dumb as often portrayed, he could make that decision. One can also argue that we often shorten or simplify names to be more practical. The United Kingdom, Great Britain, or simply Britain, are all legit shorter names for The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Since the practice is legit, so would shortening "Frankenstein's monster" to simply "Frankenstein".

    It doesn't matter what Mary Shelly's book says. The Monster of film and TV is not the same as the creature in the book. Even though most movies have him known only as "the monster", we as a society have given him the name Frankenstein. Why? Because there is no generic term for the type of character he is. He's one of a kind. He's not a werewolf, a vampire, a zombie, a mummy, a lagoon creature, a ghost, a witch, or any other entity of horror. Therefore calling him Frankenstein is not only acceptable it's appropriate.
