This honestly reminds me of the chronicles of Narnia, where Lucy, Susan, Peter, and Edmund had to escape bombings and go live at this one rich dude's house. I never understood this when I was younger lmao

I often wonder if the children that were evacuated were mistreated by those they went to live with. I would pray that they weren't. These children were already frightened and home sick.

Many WERE exploited---and physically, mentally, and sexually assaulted. Older children ,who were ordered by their parents--to stay with and look after their younger siblings, were callously seperated. Even twins were. BUT,, other children from --perhaps deprived, and badly treated at home, never wanted to go back to their families AND some parents didn't want the children back either--a complete mix of experiences and desirses all round.

Some children WERE taken advantage of, especially by farm families who saw their new houseguests as a source of free labor. Kids who had glasses and/or physical disabilities were less likely to be chosen for this reason. But other kids were well-treated, and some became very fond of their foster families. Some of the children who may have been orphans or weren't well-bonded with their parents or guardians in London, chose to stay with their foster families and finish their schooling. It had to have been terrifying, though, as a child to be suddenly separated from your family, put onto a bus or a train with NO idea where you were going or who you were going to live with. And to have strange people come in and look over all the kids gathered in a community center, and pick out a child the way one would pick out a puppy at a pet store, and to be one of the few remaining kids who WASN'T chosen, for whatever reason, and know that whoever was taking you in most likely took you because they HAD to, not because they really wanted you. For some kids, being evacuated worked out fine if they were taken in by good families, and some wound up in even better circumstances than in their original homes. For others who didn't end up in such great homes, they ended up with a lifetime of unpleasant memories.

There were reports that some kids came and were really disturbed... some would wet the bed, some actually found they were eating dinner at a dining table for the first time of their lives, that quality of life improved. It was variable.

Pienso que uno de los momentos mas fuertes y doloroso es dejar partir a un hijo, siendo que ya era terrible por la guerra en si. Les mando un abrazo a todos y a todas.

I'm putting a visit to that museum on my bucket list. You know, for some reason it never really sunk in that these kids were all taken from their families.. I'm a mother of two and I can honestly say I would NOT let anyone take my kids from me, we'd go together or not at all. I'd burn that pamphlet too. How horrible it must've been for them.

easy to say at this distance. My mother spent much of the war moving all over the country with her 5 years oldr brother. somes to extended family and sometimes with school. Her brother often used to leave her at rail connectons and go look at steam trains leaving m mother to catch the next tain and hopre her brother got on the train as ell. . She along with many in her generation learnt resilience and probably grew up quite fast as a result
