This was great! Love this place, I did a portrait photoshoot here years ago and drive by it from time to time if I'm taking the back roads up to Big Bear. For anyone wondering what the state of it is now, I drove past it about 2 years ago and it's been fenced up behind a chain link fence.
you made the desert look INCREDIBLE! Best story about Llano I've seen.
Loved this video! Thanks!
Great video Tom. Keep it up
Excellent work! I've been binge watching episode after episode
Killing it as always Tom.
Beautiful shots and editing… I hope you will come back on KZread! You deserve at least 100k subscribers😊 good luck
This is the best video I seen on Llano. 👍👍
You're really a talented filmmaker. The look and feel of how you shoot... The pacing and feel in how you cut... Your use of sound to drive the narrative... It all projects great polish and craftsmanship with just the right bit of grit. A fairly unique and compelling style with enormous potential. What are your aspirations? Where to next?
Man you guys put out some quality content!
Your videos are not only interesting and educational, but beautiful pieces of art. Thank you for continuing to create works of such high caliber.
Tom the Hipster historian produces another interesting doco. Nice one mate.

Nope, when you add to a 7.5 minute history video a minute long ending of you skateboarding on an empty highway, you definitely belong to some sort of hipster subset!
Tried to explore this place as it was on our leaving California list. Highway Patrol told us to leave, and that we were trespassing on state property. A fence has been put up around the main building that can be seen from Highway 138.
Tom is so cool
Fantastic!
Sweet quality, I enjoyed the video.
Absolutely wonderful. And so educational.
Great videos, very well done. Thanks for the hard work!

5:03 “squabbling over water rights …” was llano del rio’s downfall, not drought. this from wikipedia-During the early period of Llano, Harriman had secured large amounts of water for the growing colony. Though in theory Llano had enough water to sustain itself and to grow, much of the water could only be accessed by building a dam. Llano applied to California for a permit to build a dam. However, California Commissioner of Corporations denied Llano’s application to construct a dam saying, “‘Your people do not seem to have the necessary amount of experience and maybe the sums of money it will involve.’”
What is the city of Llano doing?
I just found out about these yesterday and I have now watched every one of them. Really love these! Looking forward to more. :) ...maybe Chantry flats...or the history of hotels that used to be in the angeles national forest, etc.
I lived in llano for years, it’s basically the Wild West there still. Be carful out there Ladies and gentlemen.
was this shot by sir roger deakins asc?

When's the next episode so ing out
I think you have the beginning wrong. The L A Times bombing trial was a joke. The bombing was blamed on the McNamara Bros but the evidence was completely corrupted. Harriman TOOK the defense of the McNamara defendant and developed evidence that 1) the explosion , as you can see was from inside not outside 2) that workers had been complaining about the horrible toxic explosive fumes that were improperly stored on the property ( lots of cleaning of the plates with solvents improperly stored) and some had gotten so sick they weren't there the night of the explosion. Everyone knew the thing could explode because of the negligence and non concern for worker safety.... Mcnamara was in San Francisco I think at the time of the bombing btw. and the brother was a union officer living and back east at the time of the explosion. The cops and L A district attorney were notoriously crooked and in the pocket of Chandler and the Merchants and Manuf assoc he controlled... witnesses could be bought and the agencies working for chandler and the d a were notorious... Clarence Darrow comes out and takes over defense as co counsel to Job who is running for mayor... and probably would win the election. Darrow gets busted on a bogus charge of jury tampering and then makes a deal with the DA and chandler where he must plead his client(s) guilty BEFORE THE ELECTION.. he does. they get a safe deal but destroys the union and Job Harrimans chance of winning. DId they do it> I do not think so. THe LA times had a new building ready within a few days as it was being readied before the explosion,. Chandler was evil and is hated by union people everywhere and by the Phillipinos who know history. ( he did shenagans there too). Another story.
You stopped the story 21 years to soon. Harriman moved his colony to Vernon Parish Louisiana. The New Llano Colony survives until 1937-38 until over spending and leadership disputes tore the colony apart. Please keep the story going
Another example of socialism failing. Shocked.
An excellent object lesson. An alleged "socialist" spends $80,000 (bongo bucks back a century ago) to try and put together a "Utopia". Dies in less than 4 years, and no, you can't pin that one just on lack of water.
It's difficult to get past the words, "Anti Socialist LA Times". I know it is history, but it just sounds so strange.
I shot a Kung Fu movie here

For my final for a class, me and a few friends used llano del rio as a shooting location for a Kung-Fu-Western called SHANGHAI JUAN: DESERT WARRIORS OF BLOOD SKULL MOUNTAIN
