Today Lawrie gets to drive one of his childhood dreams, the mighty, but tiny Thunderbird 4! Just why was he asked to go to the Apedale Light Railway?
For more information on the line, and the amazing collection of locomotives in the collection, check out their website here: avlr.org.uk/
A video featuring:
Lawrie - Presenter, confused to not be near water,
Charles - Cameraman, suspecting Lawrie has the wrong end of the stick,
Loz - Cameraman, has worked out which way round the camera goes.

The less fabulous, the more I’m in love.

The one that absolutely looks like a train shack has to be my favorite one ever
what I love so much about narrow gauge industrials is just how many aftermarket mods the operators do preserving a locomotive is great, but actively improving it with home-grown creature comforts and upgrades adds so much more interest to it
The rail equivalent of a lawnmower. Just a goofy little tractor built to do one simple thing and be comfy enough to make you not totally hate using it.
Did it come from a van pulled behind a standard gauge "Thunderbird 2"? A very fun little loco, the name really suits its looks!
Because of this channel I started to volunteer at foxfield railway and can I just say there's no way the miniature railway will be open by the 20th the turntable well hasn't been fully dug out and we can't go on part of the loop because it's to overgrown and damaged but the bar will definitely be open don't worry

If the bar is open that is all the good news we need
Not really disappointed at all nice to see one of the last Motorail engines running. it is one of those locos that looks wrong on its own but is perfect with a rake of skips wagons behind it. Love it.

Exactly
love it! Was a massive Gerry Anderson fan growing up in the late 80s/90s, who cares if it doesn't submarine, or rescue, it's a moving yellow box on rails!
Excellent video. This was the first loco I ever drove back in 1993 at the Tiny Tramway Mineing Company (the e is correct!). The TTMC was a back yard railway owned and built by Tim Shelton. The railway basically comprised of a loop around the garden with sidings going off to various sheds. Play value was added by a working sand mine that Tim had dug to extract sand for his landscaping business. It was a totally bonkers place. When I knew the loco it was named "Pride of Corfe" and had a Petter PH2 engine.

Was the railway taken up
Ha! your clip of the miniature railway has me, the kids and their mom on it (we used to have quite close ties with them until we split up and we've kinda drifted away a bit :/ But it's me! :D
This is actually what I was expecting, but from hearing the backstory of this engine I would say it deserved that name. FAB! P.S. Maybe you could've done a Thunderbirds style launch sequence. Just Suggesting.
Keep up the lovely videos! Incredible how you do multiple videos a week! (unlike others) And its also crazy that you go place to place barely with breaks!!
love the look of this little train
When my dad was in the navy and serving on HMS Apollo i believe it was they nicknamed Apollo thunderbird 7 as she got sent on any task imaginable this particular tour of duty haha think they had thunderbird 7 painted under the ships name plate for a short time haha
It isn't much to look at but it is a sturdy hardworking locomotive
Loved the ad spot, makes me wish I wasn't in America
It's beautiful, a piece of art and your harsh words must hurt it's little yellow heart! Honestly, this feels like a model kit turned into a real locomotive as opposed of the other, usual way around. Warm greetings from the Netherlands🇳🇱.

Could be worse. You can officially call a resident Ffesterbahn Hunslet "Harold" all day long, but if it comes with No.7195's back story, it's more alliterative familiar moniker rather lacks the prestige of "Thunderbird 4" Go on ... search 'Festipedia Locomotives nickname list' [gratuitous plug of the day].
Great video and brilliant editing well done .... I always wanted a go in 'the MOLE' from thunderbirds - it looked a bit like a Vickers Vigor bulldozer but had a massive drill on it !
SO CLOSE TO US!
Another fantastic video! keep it up lawrie!
Hi! I'm becoming more and more of a fan! I've started looking up some of yor old posts too. I made some rather negative remarks about a post some years ago, you had the good grace to answer me. I apologise profusely,I am a rather grumpy old git! Keep up the good work, it's most enjoyable!

Oh I'm pleased you're starting to enjoy the content! Thanks for giving it another try
The best loco so far. I could use this in my garden. If I could afford the rails.
Another interesting industrial narrow gauge locomotive. Will have to visit the Apedale Railway again at some point it's a great little railway especially on the gala's.
I Love this little gut but honestly to really make it a proper Thunderbird 4 you should put the pilots name under the Thunderbird 4 or on the cab somewhere? "GORDON TRACY" Now that would be a real tribute to Thunderbird 4 hahaha 😆 but also, I think it needs a proper power steam wash and a new paint job in Thunderbird 4 yellow? Just my opinion hahaha 😅
ive driven a simplex, crackin little engines. we also have a little yellow box ruston at "north ings" Dorrington, sleaford, ours goes by the name "goldfinch" we have 3 box locos, one that is sister to the LAT at museum of lincs life lincoln.
Ok. So I know the name RUSTY from Thomas and friends is a portmanteau of Ruston and Hornsby, but tell me he doesn't look like this Simplex...
Silly 🙄🤪 there after 21:45 to be talking about missing opening windows when right by your head is the latch for the cab panel behind your head which is hinged to open and swing forward.

Great little engine! The window behind your head looks to swing open though..... 😉

I thought that but seeing the exhaust seems to come out that side it might be suicidal to have it open when running.
I think I've seen a bigger 7-1/4" gauge loco.
Question, that latch over our right shoulder. on the outside it seems that window behind you is a panel associated with it that might be removable. you would lose your headrest though if it is.
Really nice loco
Lawrie kept saying no openable windows, but i feel with the two hinges on the outside, and the spring pin on the inside means the window behind lawries head opens up...

Yes, but not once you're inside!
You must admit, it does look a lot like Thunderbird 4 :)
Neat little engine. Though I can't help worry what would happen if it got derailed and fell onto it's right side. The driver would be trapped inside the tiny cab.
@lmm

The back of the cab opens.
More industrial narrow gauge please! It is a shame these dont exist in industry in the UK anymore and have all but dissappeared from the continent too.
I'm liking that. Give it a bit of a plough.
I assume that this is the longest train that you have pulled 😉
Loco looks good
What a delightful engine, I'm not disappointed at all that it didn't drop from the belly of TB2 as I think it looks marvellous. I may need help with my weird obsession for IC engined locos, but I really don't care.
I go from watching these videos to looking at how much it would cost to lay track for my own railway. Then I remember that my garden isn't big enough for any of this
My Australian friends at Puffing Billy told me that like Dominion of Canada, A4 Commonwealth of Australia was also proposed to the Australian Government… who refused, so she was cut up 😢
My brain won't do an aesthetic judgement of the end plates/buffer beams on account of expecting they are that tall in order to add mass which adds weight which adds tractive effort. (up to a certain point).
It's a machine. It's not ugly. It's functional.
oh would you look at that, a yellow box.

Yeah, we’re gonna need a video on ol’ Big Chungus at 3:10.
Not disapointed with this tribute to T-Bird 4. Given it's proven rescue abilities I feel it's justly deserved. I do though take great exception to you pushing your inadequacies relating to the degree to which you are vertically challenged (PC Term ..there could be children and ladies viewing), onto the locomotive in question. I feel this is grossly unfair and ask you to in future please, think of how the locomotive may feel.
I can’t wait to see you come try American stuff I’d definitely be happy to let you play with my fairmont speeder
"its sounds delicious" 18:10
dont be mean! its a cute little loco!!
FYI there might be a 3ft gauge train on fb market place. It a bit of a wreck? Glesmac locomotive chassis, cab and wheels but no engine 3" gauge estimated weight 4 to 5 tons. Okehampton. Looks like an ex mining engine? Or chemical works? Seeing the narrow gauge reminded me some? Good luck!
It's so ugly it's cute😇😍 thanks for sharing may the diesel fumes be with you 😝
Hi Lawrie, I noticed a spring latch over your right shoulder, door or window??? I think I see hinges opposite the spring latch??
...so this might be something to re-build a tiny "Gmiender" locomotive for my HO scale but Z-gauge track "Feldbahn" layout to resemble. It does resemble that little "battery electric" locomotive. some N-scale chain link might look just right.
It really is the Humpty of the rails!
What is the latch over your right shoulder? Is it for a panel removal for more ventilation?
Dude it's cute
i was more wondering that the title kinda a Thunderbirds are go theme tune

Imagine running that little yellow box with Thunderbird tunes in your head all day.
i think a pivot could be added to the lever to make things easier
I think despite its design and size, there must have been a reason it was built in the first place
@bentullett6068

As Lawrie mentioned it was first used by a sewage treatment works. But similar other versions of these locomotives ended up in mining, quarry use or large construction use.
@lmm >>> Great video...👍
Fantastic, really enjoyed that! It was built to do a job, not to look pretty!
You don't so much drive that, as wear it. It fits just 'right' like a nice suit
Talking about things you have driven, haven't you driven all surviving Y7s?
@lmm

I have indeed
Does that latch just behind your right shoulder allow the side of the cab to open? Or ... ?
@Jackadoor
Жыл бұрын
By the looks of it, that latch is for opening the left side window panel. The question is, does the hinge still function?
That's a neat little locomotive :) It just needs to be a foot longer, so the cab can be bigger ;) On a different note, does anyone know what weight/size rail they use at that railroad?
@NJPurling

Looks like 25lb stuff in the grassed area. In the main railway area that is on stone ballast?? Something around 40lb?

@@jonathansharman2872 Thank you :) That's crazy light!
TY Lawrie, which one of the Thunderbirds team do you most identify with?...
Why not at having a go on the RH&DR Locos
You wouldn’t want to tow sewage sludge around with a nicer locomotive.
How many horsepower? OMG it’s about the same as Rita the Renault 4TL 😂

There there Lawrie, at least they didnt troll you THAT badly. Honestly it seems the Apedale Railway seems to always troll you whenever you get invited to that railway, at least theyre not asking you to drive 'Merlin' again Edit: Thunderbird 4 seems to be in good condition for her young age of 47!

The V sets here in NSW are over 40 years old and still in mainline service, although their replacements are on the way.
Naaa! It's Cute!!!
I’m usually a big fan of these tiny little industrial locomotives.. DIEMA, Schöma and Jung in particular but this type looks quite ugly compared to most I’ve seen, everything feels out of proportion. Still a cool engine tho!

I like it, but it's not the prettiest thing I've ever driven
Cool aber weil nur sie jetzt ihr drei hier null für drei personen 303 Welches Mal die Normale Schreibweise reden
But it has a personality. Those two eyes and a mouth on the front... how could you not see it?
