A&E Wait Times Are a 'National Emergency'

Rishi Sunak had said there are ten days to save the country from a Labor supermajority, while the Lib Dem leader says we've got ten days to save the NHS. We asked our people's panel about what they want to hear from politicians on health and social care.
Andrew Pierce and Kevin Maguire join us to discuss the ongoing crisis in the NHS as well as The Gambling Commission investigating individuals linked to the conservative party, and Nigel Farage's call to open up peace talks with Russia.

This is Labour mate. People didn’t notice Labour practically privatised the NHS with PFI and without anyone even realising. If you’re wondering why doctors aren’t being paid correctly it’s because they can’t afford it. PFI makes everything so much more expensive, private companies expect a profit margin from their investment. A £300m hospital costs £1.5bn, everything as small as a fkn pencil is twice the price. I explained that I was on my own and if I became any more ill that there would be no one to call for me and they said that was tough because they weren't sending ambulances to people while they were lucid and told me I was ill and had to go to hospital but I couldn't drive because I was ill and hadn't the 75.00 it would take for a taxi and my friends that could drive me were away so I had to pay £50 for an online doctor who told me I had to go straight to hospital but I couldn't and then I don't remember what happened but eventually I woke up again and eventually I got better. It was just luck and God that kept me alive and now I have one weirdly shaped crushed toe and a lumpy leg. There is no health service.

15?hours is the normal wait at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. Last month I was treated in the acute care unit on a chair after suffering an acute trauma arachnoid hemorrhage. I had all the trauma treatment while in that chair. Then moved onto a gurney for a few nights then admitted to acute trauma ward. A total of 10 days before a bed was found. In the end I decided to come home as there were 9 acute patients waiting for a bed in the acute assessment unit. I am now having care in the community to take the pressure off of A&E. As a retired nurse and NHS worker I find this appalling. The doctors, consultants, nurses and health care workers are miraculous dedicated professionals. They refuse to let patients suffer so treat them in their consulting rooms, 4 patients to a one person cubicle, patients on the Acute assessment ward supposed to stay maximum of 48 hours still there after 2 weeks, that’s with a brand new state of the arts Louise Martindale Hospital building opened on 25 July 2024. How can we go forward with a crumbling NHS system ?

So sad. That happened to my late husband, who was dying. He was a gentle soul and would have said, ''it's okay, they are just under stress." I complained to no avail. In fact, the response was heartless. Since then, if any of mine are cruelly treated, I'll bar the nurse from going near them. That was my final decision after contacting the Head of Nursing, who at least replied sympathetically, adding that her goal was to bring back compassion, care, and respect. Would you believe that one official actually described my husband as a customer, not a patient. My daughter works in retail and would've been sacked on the spot for a fraction of how the nursing staff behaved. Take care. ❤

I have been an NHS nurse for 18 years, it had slowly got worse over the past 7 to 8 years but in the past 2 years I have seen a dramatic decline, the investment is not there and there are to many middle managers and office workers rather than clinical staff, but another problem is the large increase in foreign patients, people who have arrived in the country a few days before their admission and present unable to speak the language which holds up the process as staff need to admit and wait on translators, and a large percentage of these patients are arriving with pre existing conditions, this then results in patients on the waiting list been cancelled and then increases the waiting list times, it is a never ending cycle.

A&E waiting times are often down to not having enough free beds because social care is underfunded and on its knees and so hospital beds are filled with elderly who can't go home as they need extra care. Also in areas with difficulty seeing a GP because of the lack of funding people go to A&E because they can't get in to see their doctor. As for the housing crisis we need to stop investors from buying homes, inflating the prices and letting them out at ridiculous rents.

Unfortunately the A&E departments are treated as walk-in clinics by too many people. All are triaged (checked for medical need) on arrival and if determined to be a low priority they are told so and advised to visit the hospital pharmacy. Many refuse to do this and then complain if they are not seen after 10 / 20 hours. Low priority means you wait as long as necessary as those with a genuine need are always given priority.

All because of PFI. You can thank Labour for that! 👍

I am only a pensioner now , but have given up on my cakes, sweeties, and weekend treats - in order to pay for private health insurance ( this being a real PRIORITY ) : and a serious matter of Life, or Death .

Yes, the Tories technically introduced PFI but they used soo sparingly because they were aware that it's just debt. Very expensive debt. You and I have a credit card but we don't go round buying everything because we know we have to pay for it in the long run. Labour comes in and the first time they're given the company credit card they go buying hospitals here there and everywhere. "look at me everyone, I'm gonna buy all the common folk healthcare and anything else you need to make me look good and get me re-elected but don't worry where the money came from. It'' be fine, trust me bro" That's literally the last labour government. it'll be the same this time and I'm definitely not defending the tories btw. fk the tories.

@@UNITED8993 PFI contracts do need to be stopped and this can be achieved by termination of PFI contracts, taxing the profits of PFI contracts and nationalisation of PFI contracts with the savings reinvested in public services. Labour planned to review all PFI contracts and nationalise PFI contracts in their 2017 general election manifesto. The majority of current PFI contracts will be expected to expire in the 2030s with small numbers remaining after 2044.
