A Drop of Midnight

Harlem Stage commissioned WaterWorks artist Jason ‘Timbuktu’ Diakité will debut his autobiographical theater project, A Drop of Midnight, directed by Farnaz Arbabi, with Jonathan McCrory as production dramaturg, composed by Erik Hjärpe, and accompanied by live band, The Rakiem Walker Project. One of Sweden’s biggest hip-hop artists and a best-selling author, Diakité takes us on a journey of cross-generational migration from the cotton fields of South Carolina to the little town of Lund, Sweden. It is a story of how he searches for his roots in order to bridge the gap between races, struggles and generations. A Drop Of Midnight explores the questions of being a son and being a father, of how one generation wants to escape the same past that the next generation wholeheartedly wants to embrace. What does blood memory, legacy, and ancestry mean to an African-American family that left Harlem for Sweden?
