A Drivers Eye view from Paignton to Exeter St Davids along the very scenic Devon Sea Wall

A beautiful Drivers Eye view along the English Riviera from Paignton through Torquay to Netwon Abbot. Past the National Hunt racecourse then along side the Teign estuary to Teignmouth and along the Sea wall that spectaculary got washed away on the night of Febraury 14th 2014, leaving the line closed for weeks whilst it was rebuilt and re-enforced. We then continue on through Starcross and along side the Exe estuary before crossing the River Exe and our arrival into Exeter St Davids. Watchout for the Bug!

Great views. Thanks so much for posting. We always used to travel from London Paddington to Teignmouth when I wS growing up and we loved going through the five tunnels as we knew then that we were almost there. Thanks so much for naming all the tunnels. Have walked the sea wall many times. Last week was the last time.

Went right past our old flat in Dawlish, loved that walk to Dawlish Warren and back we always waved to the train drivers, loved it, just couldn’t cope with the building shaking when the sea hit the sea wall in winter storms! 👍🏻

I am astounded by how Newton Abbot has changed since I went there in the 70's early 80's. Just 3 plain tracks and not even a single point at the west end now, what a difference. Great video though

How things have changed, i can remember the diamond cross-over outside Paignton that allowed trains to leave either platform onto the up line, and lots of people on the footbridge watching every train departure. Also 4 lines into newton Abott, 4 platforms, a passing line on the up track, and the motorail terminal. Also many more lines in the goods yard opposite the horse racing course, not the few there are now. The empty space says everything about the decline of our railways over the last 40 years :(

I Spent a many years working this area, one of my favs, from maintaining structures, litter clearing between the platforms and that estuary wall railing between Starcross and the yacht club, what a job that was every weekend during the autumn and winter for about 6 months, still have a core which was drill out of the wall, why couldn't Network Rail asked us to do it during the summer 🤣. Suberb video of one of the best train rides in the country. Thanks

I put on another vid of a train ride and it worked perfectly. I'll always remember this ride as we came from the other direction, from Paddington, as we came out of a tunnel my Mum cried: "the sea, the sea!" It made me a fan of trains, Brunel and of course, the sea. I was 8 at the time.

My grandparents had a hotel, in the 1930’s , a beautiful Edwardian building, painted green and cream I think with a verandah. Set back from the sea overlooking a grassy area in front of Goodrington sands. My mother remembered a big storm when she was small. She said in the morning all the sand had been washed away just leaving the stones!! Joan

I worked the very last morning SWT service from Paignton before it was withdrawn, hybrid 158/159 6 car due to repairs, (last ever was later at night), really miss that route. I did that shunt one day that the 143 is doing but we both had the road. It must have looked strange to the people standing at the crossing seeing two trains leaving at the same time and me racing him. I presume the big herring gull (or one of its mates), still waits by the driver's cab in the up platform to see if you have a bit of a sandwich for it or a chip etc? So funny. When I first drove over the route in 1999, it was still the regulation to blow the horn entering and leaving tunnels. The four nearest Dawlish though are so close to each other that I would blow one (high or low), on entering, then one in between each one and the final one on exit before reaching the longer Parsons tunnel.

I can remember being in the old cinema next to the crossing at Paignton in the late 70's, my cousin and I would run to the toilet to look out the window when we heard a Class 50 leaving the station, sod whatever film it was, a big filthy unrefurbished Hoover was far more entertaining 😂😂. Its sad to think that all the glory days have now gone, no more real locomotive hauled trains of note, only the odd rail tour, it's just a procession of horrid units. 😫 Even a good old HST has more character than any modern plastic monstrosity.

Pity it was low tide and no easterly gale blowing - I was looking forward to seeing breakers crash over the train 😀! Memories of my childhood many years ago, both on the train and walking with the dogs along the sea wall. Another commenter observed how run down Torquay station looks,. In my young days, it used to be very attractive, with gardens tended by the station staff, but I guess that nowadays few people travel to Torquay by train, and it's too expensive to employ porters, etc, who can keep the station looking good in their spare time.

Hi there, great trip thankyou. Understand about your restrictions about sound and I hope you can find a solution to that soon. Must say I really appreciate the additional captions and descriptions ... a great improvement. As someone mentioned earlier ... you must have been taking notes from Don Coffey ... in my opinion the "master" of cabrides. Have subscribed and look forward to further trips in your company

Thankyou for this video... enjoyed it very much. Having Google Earth open at the same time helps to cross-reference where 'we' might be on the journey. As a suggestion, would you please indicate the bridges - especially the over-bridges - so we can keep up as the landscape evolves. I think I will have to play this backwards... heading south along the Exe estuary always evokes 'coming home' after an adventure, and by the time I entered the tunnels, I just knew for sure!

Interesting to note all the crossovers, in Victoria (au) many crossovers have been removed so most suburban lines are just two tracks with a crossover at the terminus. When operating the weed poison train to Glen Waverley, the VR would run a light engine (another loco) to put the train back out again. Nowadays the weed spraying is done from Hi-rails which are trucks with rail wheels which can be raised or lowered.

Great video, rather similar to the DB Productions of the late 1990s, depicting reinstated railways after German reunification. One observation, would it be possible to include small notifications of the locations of closed stations on the route.

There's a possible way around the recoding audio problem. You need a 'model release' signed by everyone in the cab after they have heard the audio and agreed to deletions. BobUK.

I am hoping to get some more up to date recordings later in the year that will have sound. It was mainly caused by paranoid HR and the new gdpr regulations coming in 2- 3 years ago. Thanks for the suggestion.
