What a super video. Thank you. I served with the RAF,at steamer Point, during 1967. I remember the families all returning to the UK as the troubles increased. For the first time you have shown me how happy the families of British serving men were in earlier times. Aden must have been a really nice posting then. Folk were obviously very safe and moved around quite freely. Fantastic viewing.

i think this is a great video. my family are from aden. and my dad is always talking about the old days. and how great aden was under the british. we live in england. and i think its great that somehow, somewhere down the line we have something in common. according to my dad, aden was one of the best cities in the world at that time. and i personally think that was because of the british influence at the time. so, thank you for this video.

Copy of a recent email: I have had the chance to watch the fabulous film of 1960 Aden. I was born in Aden forty six years ago (the age of this film). I have emailed my brother to play the film for my mother, he did and it made her cry. My Understanding is that Fred and Dorothy were your parents. May Allah bless their souls, accept them, and grant them his mercy.

What a great video... I lived in Aden in 1992-93 and I have great memories of it. The people were warm and hospitable, true Arabs... thanks for sharing.

Many thanks for your kind comment. Everything is in fact here except for private family sequences we would not want to upload. Everything likely to be of wider interest is here. Also the quality is probably about as good as we can get it, the main constraint being that the originals were on 8mm cine film, not good to start with, which were copied to VHS some years ago, and VHS deteriorates.

Hi All, ...and yes, the Aden I knew was amazing. You had to be there to believe it. Trust me, A lot of us Parsis from India struggled and worked really hard there but the Chilled Beer on a cool evening at the Balcony at our house in Crater was really worth it. Also the drives to Steamer point, Gold Moore Beach, Khormaksar, Dar'Saad, the quaint shops belongng to the Gujarathi merchants ( with Dad's Shop plonked right in between), the salt flats, little Aden BP refineries,

The best toys bought ever by Dad for me at Cawasjee Dinshaw stores. The ......sword-fishes and occasional whales at Khormaksar. The Sand storms... Oh Man! Vivid memories and flashes. But the best was the pristine green water seen from the 707 (air India) just before landing at Khormaksar. God Bless Adenites!! Jamshid Pesi (God Bless His Soul) Buhariwalla.

I pray that Aden bounces back as the Pearl of South Arabia (...well it's more like the Tear of S. Arabia at the moment) Hope for the best. Everyone tells me who'd go back to Aden of all the places. Well...this hopeless romantic (Jamshid Pesi Buhariwalla) would!! PS: Dubaii & Bahrain became what Aden hoped to be. But the point is that the Adenee's are fiercely independant at Heart.

Apologies to farisaden - I deleted your comment in error - the comment was "Thanks for this wonderful video. It has a very important historical value. But it shock me. What did the Bristish do for Aden along all those years. Aden looked to me as if one of the medival ages villages. I was born well after the date of this footage and my father used to tell Aden was very well and properous modern city. It did not see that in the video."

OK, If you ever see this comment. That was my father ( Indian, Parsi Zoroastrian) who knocked the poor bloke. He was in some real trouble due to this but go off afer paying quite a bit as you can imagine. The car involved was a dark blue Morris.

I intended to "reply" (not "remove") that this is an interesting comment. However, you could also drive around some parts of England in 1960 and find it hard to find any signs of modern progress.

I wonder if in 1957 you knew how evil BP was, and, if so, did you block that out so as not to make you wonder if you were part of that evil? I apologize if this comes off as insensitive, but I'm really just interested to know if people understand how awful they were even in 1957 or did people think that what they were doing was good?
