A Dream Cut Short: Springbok Gaffie Du Toit Opens Up

Спорт

In this fascinating and frank discussion Gaffie Du Toit opens up about his Springbok career. Gaffie burst on to the scene in 1998 as an exciting young flyhalf. He was supposed to be a Springbok star for the next decade at least. But life does not always work out that way.
He was publicly blamed for a 28-0 loss to New Zealand in Dunedin in 1999 and was dropped meaning he missed the World Cup. He would miss the 2003 tournament too before being recalled by Jake White in 2004. Gaffie helped the Springboks win the Tri-Nations that year having become more of a fullback by that stage.
Du Toit holds no grudges and in this candid conversation he talks openly about his career, the highs and lows, the might-have-beens. Do not miss out on this incredible chat with a man the fans fondly remember: Gaffie Du Toit!

Great interview with Gaffie - he was a versitile player that really could play anywhere in the backline. I remember that he played for Griquas, Sharks, WP and then later for Cheetahs. Gaffie sounds like a great guy. Thank you Peter for this interview.

I was there when Gaffie played in his first test, 13 June 1998 in Bloemfontein. Springboks won 37-15. My first and up to date only Springbok test which I attended live. Stefan Terblanche scored his 4 tries in front of us.

Thanks as always, Sean! Gaffie's English is great - there was no need to apologise. He was a great player too. I didn't say it in the video but he was actually one of my favourites and I truly believe if managed correctly he would have been our flyhalf at the 2003 and 07 World Cups but it was not to be. And believe me when I tell you, Franco Smith should have been part of that journey too. But like Gaffie says, different coaches have different ideas. We'll never know.

There is either a dose of humility among these Afrikaans ex bok players or they are deliberately flying under the radar I think his English is top notch Gaffie should come to some parts of USA and even he will be shocked That aside, great interview as always and also great to know more about Gaffie, who admittedly I had not heard much about Sounds like a down to earth guy and hoping he can grab all the opportunities life presents to him On the trivia, I was going to go with ABSA, so that’s a fail for me 😂

@@frontrowrugby Might bring it up again. I said it before,it bears repeating - I had it confirmed by people in the Springbok set up who heard it first hand from Luyt: Louis Luyt said in 1995 that the plan was to make Carel du Plessis his protege and Springbok coach and that he would make it happen. Luyt was broederbond obviously. He was always angling to put his man, du Plessis, in. A big issue under Markgraaf was the contracts and the extra money for the1995 RWC winners compared to the rest of the squad. Surprise surprise Joel Stransky who was a b-b (and a freemason lodge member when he came to England) had a visceral hatred for Markgraaf. Also puts a whole new perspective on what Markgraaf said to ex-Scotland hooker Allan when he said, "the Broederbonders don't want me to pick you at no. 2". I was around then-current and ex Springboks in 97 when I heard these revelations. Speaking of sponsors alot of ex-Boks were furious with Louis Luyts son negotiating a new Nike contract mid-97 in the manner of a spoilt child with no business experience.being given a toy. That was the environment that Markgraaf operated in. What everyone will say about Markgraaf is "no excuse for what he said!" and everyone will say "quite agree!" which misses the point - firstly, they must have no experience of the racism, sexism, lechery and thuggery that some SARU members openly displayed at official functions at the time. One feted SARU member was actually publicly chased out of the official box at Newlands by an ex-Bok I knew who was ready to hand him a beating. Now,, what kind of things do you think that calibre of SARU member were in the habit of saying to all and sundry? And what kind of private conversations do you think the white administrators were having about them and their kind? I'm not condoning it.. not at all, but that was the environment. Which leads us to the second point, why out of all these people's private, red blooded conversations, was it Markgraaf's irritable comments recorded and put out there in the media? Commenters on this channel will say "no no! Markgraaf bad racist!" which is a nice virtue signal but they obviously have never been around Or**** Ho****s after a few drinks. Again, WHY was Markgraaf the only one recorded during that time? Plug in all of those characters to a dictaphone, black, coloured or white, they were all saying the same kind of things.. But markgraaf was the one recorded? whilst Luyt the B-B wanted du Plessis in and the likes of 'funny handshake' Stransky hated Markgraaf with a passion? Thats why Gaffie du Toit liked Markgraaf - because he was real, whilst the rest of SA rugby (of all colours) was thick with corruption at the time. The whole episode reflects worse on the likes of Luyt and Stransky than it does on Markgraaf. You dont have to agree with me but someone has to bring this up. SA Rugby in 1996 was not a place for shrinking violets and NOONE was saying careful things about race.. (well, ha ha probably Francois pienaar but thats another story..)

Great takeaways from this one. Remember when teams like Ireland were easy beats. Gaffie was similar player to Frans Steyn. Was never really groomed properly to settle in one position. Part of a great Griquas side in his early years at provincial level.

I concur, Nunu. Gaffie in many ways was born at the wrong time. Today they would appreciate his versatility more but also coaching has also evolved so much that they would know exactly what to do with a player like Gaffie. I still believe he could/should have been our flyhalf at the 2003 and even 07 Rugby World Cups with Franco Smith at 12. But our coaches, management and administrators needed to play their part in that too. Oh well ...

Haha, thanks bud! The order of the interviews can sometimes be a bit random - it often comes down to whoever is available but it's great to have had Teich and Gaffie back to back. Two men whose careers were heavily impacted by Nick Mallett. I'm really grateful that both of them were happy to come and talk about their careers with me. Hahaha, I'm sure you didn't like the Bulls part ... but I totally understand you're not a Province fan. One thing I'm sure we agree on is that in SA rugby nothing beats the Province-Bulls rivalry! You have a great Sunday too and God bless! PS Yes, some surprising results but I do know that the French rested several of their star players so maybe we can't read too much into that Scottish win. As for the Aussies, maybe Eddie is finally getting them to click (even if just a little bit). All about peaking at the right time. Agree Moodie is looking like a great player. We're going to have him and Arendse on the wings for the next four years I believe - very exciting!

As for Mr Markgraaff I think you and I are thinking the same thing! We are indeed that close to RWC content. Very appropriate that it's a 95 winner but I must be honest it wasn't planned that way!
