"A Drain On The NHS" Mike Graham Reacts To 'Game Of Stones' Cash For Weight Loss Scheme

Mike Graham reacts to a trial finding that offering cash incentives to obese people in text messages could help them lose more weight.
Researchers suggested this approach could be cheaper for the health service than traditional weight management programmes as it requires fewer staff.
It could also help reach people from more deprived areas, they added.
The year-long study - known as Game of Stones - included 585 men from Bristol, Belfast and Glasgow with an average body mass index (BMI) of 37.7, who were split into three groups.
One of the groups was told £400 was being held for each of them in an account and would be transferred over at the end of the trial.
Mike says: "Why should the state be paying for them to lose weight".

The NHS should look at it's own staff first! No public money should be spent on overweight/ obese people. Nor on those who can't have kids - No public money on IVF at all!

If a little money was spent educating people that their obesity is the result of the absurd amount of carbohydrates they consume, and the prevalence of ultra processed foods in their diet, the NHS could save a fortune on the downstream consequences of them doing so.

@@gilessteveI agree with some of your points, however there's incredible information already in existence. The desire has to be there. It's not only carbohydrates that are consumed in abundance, unhealthy fats are dangerous too.

I don't think IVF should be available on the NHS either. It's a choice to have a child, it's not a necessity for anyone.

@@Camille_Anderson I agree that there is information out there, but there is also disinformation. The official dietary guidance is an example of such. Saturated fat and red meat have been demonised in favour of carbohydrates, vegetable oils and grains. We're bombarded with advertising for processed junk that shouldn't even be considered 'food'. How are people to know which of the conflicting messages to listen to, and how's it working out for everyone?

@@Camille_Anderson Procreation is a normal and necessary function of the human body, and as such falls under the remit of the NHS. Would you prefer that childless women were treated for depression the rest of their lives instead?

It's nigh on impossible to get a doctors appointment now, the only people I know that use the NHS regularly are the obese, I'm sick of having paid in my entire life and now an OAP I can't get to see my GP.

I would say. The bonkers idea might work. But, with one condition. The money gets paid only when they reach their final healthy weight and. It's one chance only. Otherwise, you'll just be creating a new way for people to earn money. They'll just eat and then lose a bit and repeat. It all stems from some basic facts about recent and current life. People may be old enough to be classed as adults. But mentally they are just kids. And two, people may become parents but they don't act like parents and the kids get raised badly. And then it repeats and we end up with all the madness of the current world.

It's a fallacy that if people lived longer it would necessarily cost the NHS more money. The exact opposite is true, in fact. People would live longer if they were not suffering from the chronic diseases (T2D, CVD, etc) that drain the NHS of resources. The simple measure of cutting all added sugar and ultra processed food from the diet would go a long way towards achieving this. Additionally, much auto-immune disease and inflammation is caused by an intolerance of wheat products, so educating people about that would also be beneficial. Sadly, people don't know this, and are bombarded with bad dietary advice, junk food advertising, vending machines, fake 'health' foods and terrible school and hospital food. The truth is that there's too much money at stake. Highly processed food and insulin are big money-spinners for the manufacturers. I'm not optimistic about change coming from the top down any time soon. Offering £400 and expecting it to make any difference is a joke.

£400 is a drop in the ocean compared to the vast amounts the nhs spends on people because they're obese. It makes more financial sense to get them to lose weight, rathan than spend decades treating their many health issues. It would also relieve pressure on social services, as these people require more support at a much younger age.

@@ruthcollins2841then don't have a rubbish culture that makes people depressed. Most people eat because they are bored, Due to lack of job opportunities, lack of sports/hobbies on their price range . Plus most sports and fitness classes haven't improved since the 80s They still hold classes for 10 people at a time , but due to population growth they should be aiming the classes at one hundred people at a time . Is it any wonder people can't get in classes
