Glad to see you enjoying for the Concorde cart. I've been using the Concorde Club cart and elliptical stylus from the DJ line for a couple of years and I love it! The Club cart goes around $300 and the stylus are around $80CDN through Long & McQuade. A bit more affordable and sounds and tracks great on my AT120!
Hi Frank, Mark from Maryland here. I no longer buy new vinyl. No real point is there. I only buy new old stock. I'm so tired of the QC issues of today's vinyl, plus it's mostly digital anyway. Yes, I know this has nothing to do with the above video. But I needed to voice my frustration as I'm not on any social media. Thanks

The Concord Elite is a great looking cartridge, especially on your black SL-1200. Given your enthusiastic review, I’m sure it tracks and sounds great as well. Thanks for the review. I’m tempted, but I have too many cartridges.
Now a Project Platinum and woww sound gonna blow your mind then a couple Tannoy speakers and yeah baby a new audiophile is born 🥳🥳😻😻
Nice video and informative as always. Personally not a fan of the skid row album as mentioned in previous videos. Keep up the good work 👏
Always like the Concorde . I have the Night Club V2 and love it. ( and many more carts lol )
I have the M II Club and I love it is same concept of this cartridge.

Hi Frank, a very accurate review of the Concord Elite. The Concord Elite sits between the 2Mblue and 2M Bronze. Better than the blue but as good as the Bronze or Black. All Ortofon carts require a break in time to come to life. I use a @M Blue and 2m Black on my full auto Dual CS-465 both of which I like. Enjoy the music.

@@Channel33RPMYes, I was going to suggest the 2m Bronze as well. For the price point, it would be more of an apples to apples comparison than with the 2m Blue. I’ve listened to both the Blue and Bronze, and I can say that I like the Bronze better-just more of everything the Blue has going for it. I’m now running the Black stylus on my Bronze cartridge (they’re interchangeable like the Red and Blue are). Though there isn’t the same amount of difference between how the styli sound as there is between the Blue and Bronze, the Black is still definitely worth it if someone wants to upgrade from the Bronze, but doesn’t want to start again with another product line and therefore a whole different setup.
I bought the ortofon om series, upgrading to 20, 30 and eventually 40. I received the Concorde MK1 Pro S at a discount. Was I blown away. I'm hoping the Concorde Elite will be even better.
You've intrigued me here. I also run an MP110 and love it, but hearing that the Elite opens up the soundstage more is impressive. Unfortunately at AU$699 in Australia and seemingly out of stock everywhere, I probably won't get the chance
Agree on stylus cleaning Ortofon advice. As for records I use a VPI 16.5 to clean my records, but I always do an extra rinse final step with MoFi pure water - spray on, spread out and re-vacuum. I would never use a wet cleaning fluid on a record and just dry off or air dry. It does leave solution in the grooves.

Looks too Cool 😎 for School . Maybe in my next life I can own one . Glad they let U tells US like it is .
Got mine second hand. Barely used for about 2/3s of the European retail price. The best cart that I've heard except the Ortofon M2 black. But it's very very close I think. Bought also almost simultaneously an audio Technica vm95sh. Best buys for my HiFi setup.
Many years ago I bought two Concorde styli for DJ purposes. They were the first generations and I still have them. Both carts still have two brand new replacement styli as well. They look great on a Technics turntable and a very easy to install. For hifi purposes I would buy the Audio Technica VM450ML instead. Certainly for the asking price of the Concorde Elite; the AT is a far better cart and has a better stylus profile.
I like how different that looks. I only have used the om5e because my pro ject came with that cartridge.
Hiya Frank! There IS something about those Orto(phones)! I contacted Ortofon about what their Concorde's STD designation meant...some Vinyl Engineers had an interesting concept, but Orty assured me that it was an abbreviation for "Standard". I own 2 Concorde STDs, 2 Concorde 20s (low mass, requiring a weight to a standard tonearm), a Concorde EC-10, the 2M Blue and Bronze, OM-10, 0M-5E, all of which either coming with a turntable or at an "I can't say no" price... They're all wonderful carts, but those Concordes asthetics are to die for... Got snow? Oh, by the way, there's an interesting comparison of the 2M family, Blue, Bronze, and Black on YT to the Dire Straits tune When It Comes To You...listen to the gradual noise picked up by the higher ranking carts...off topic, but related to Ortofon. Oh, BTB, I saw my comment and all it's er-rors...had to correct 'em...!
Great choice for record samples 😀. I just bought a Technics 50th anniversary edition 1200 and have been looking at upgrading from the Ortofon pro to the Blue. Great video.

I am an enthusiast but my AT95e and edifier speakers sound great - can’t imagine the sound upgrade is so significant with this cart that the cost is justified.
This is a great review, and as a DJ who has used Ortofon forever, I may try them. Their claim on not cleaning the records with a solvent is dubious at best. Maybe they are protecting themselves after selling you a $500 dollar cartridge, but I have been cleaning my collection of 25K records with solvents for 40+ years and never had any kind of problem at all. Thanks for the review! I've been eyeballing this cart, having just splurged on a Technics 50th Anny TT last summer. I'm also coming from an Ortofon 2m Blue. I noticed the output on this cart is fairly high at 8.5 mV compared to the 2m Blue's output at 5.5 mV (I assume that's because Ortofon pushes it as part of their "club" cart line). Out of curiosity, did you have to adjust any settings (gain, etc) on your pre-amp or receiver when you installed this cart?

I had an original concorde and it rocked! But you might like it more cuz it's way louder than your other carts. But careful Frank...that's a lot of weight pushing down on those records with the suggested tracking force.
Ortofon uses a glue for the diamond that can desolve with some of the fluids - so big nogo with ortofon stulys.. And - is this compatible with the old OM series like the old Concorde series?

Glad you enjoyed the cart. I personally do NOT believe in a "break in" period when it comes to equipment. If you don't notice a difference, or if something doesn't automatically blow you away then "breaking it in" will distort your original opinion. You will become used to the sound and unfortunately for a lot of companies that's exactly when the warranty conveniently expires.
@AT-wl9yq
Жыл бұрын
Belief has nothing to do with it. Phono carts do break in. How much you notice, as always, depends on many factors. However, when it comes to break in, phono carts are in a league of their own. I've had carts that literally sounded defective when new. For the first 20 to 25 hours, you can hear a change from record to record. The differences are not subtle, and anyone with normal hearing can instantly hear it for themselves. (As long as they are willing to tell the truth. That said, I know nothing I say will ever change your opinion on the matter. There's no reason to argue the point. I'm making this post because I know a lot of people read these threads. I lost track of how many times someone contacted me asking for advice on what's wrong with their system after they installed a new cart. Its intended for people who may be having an issue.
I think Ortofon has made this Cartridge with an eye for Users that own a SL-1200M7L or some other Technics Special Editions with a golden Tonearm. I own a white Edition of it, and it would be absolutely perfect for it because it matches the Colors 100%. I dont´t think they reinvented everything, it looks a bit like they combined some MK2 Club with a Bronze Needle. It will sound very well, all Ortofon Cartridges sounding good, they know what to do. I had the MKII Club, 40th Anniversary and the Century here for a Test on my 1200M7L, i also had the MP110 ( which works always fine with small Speakers because of its massive Pressure in the lower End Bass ) but in the End i always ended up with may Goldring 1006 or now with the 2400er. I would say, go for a 40th Anniversary Ortofon, which doesn´t need so much weight on it, and it has a lot less surface noise, because the output Voltage is not that high. Will sound very well and costs here 100 Euros less at the Moment.
@Channel33RPM
Жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely - I believe that was the original intention.
@AT-wl9yq
Жыл бұрын
A lot of what you are saying is true, but not the part about surface noise. Output voltage has nothing to do with it. You need a certain amount of gain to turn the phono signal into a line level signal. How you go about doing it shouldn't have any effect on surface noise. I think its possible you're mistaking surface noise with overall sound quality or too much gain. All other factors being equal, the lower a phono carts output, the better it sounds. The electricity needed to make a signal is mechanically generated by the movement of the stylus through the groove on the record. This puts out a very weak signal. The cart in the video puts out 6 mv. A typical low output phono cart can be as low as .5 to .3mv. 6mv is 12x more output voltage than .5mv. In other words, you're trying to get 12x the output power using the exact same record spinning at the exact same speed. You sacrifice quality for quantity.
Nagaoka MP-200 would be apples to apples vs. the Concorde Elite ($369 shipped from Japan).

As for the Ortofon statements: The reason they don't want you to use stylus cleaning fluid is because they don't want complains of people who screw it up. However, it's just fine to use every once in a while, if you have caked on gunk that doesn't go away by a dry brush. Just NEVER use it while holding the cartridge upside down - that way you prevent fluid from leaking into the suspension. While Ortofon claims you need a Bearwald alignment, the Technics 1200 tonearms have an alignment that's way closer to Stephenson... Bearwald requires a lot longer overhang.

@@QoraxAudio alignment question since I have been going down this rabbit hole the past week while looking at carts, and noticed your comment. If the Technics 1200 is closer to a Stevenson alignment, can you still use a Baerwald protractor to set up a cart on a 1200? Is the difference discernable in terms of listening? I asked someone who worked in a hi-fi shop this question and they mentioned that they prefer Baerwald for all TTs except for Regas (and Rega carts)

@@grapefruitplussoda Well, the maximum tracking error with bearwald is the lowest of all being fairly linear. However, Stevenson has less tracking error near the center, but a higher tracking error near the edge. They're all tradeoffs... the optimal alignment differs, depending on stylus shape and the way a record is cut. I prefer the Technics alignment, simply because it's easy to perform using their supplied overhang gauge.

@@QoraxAudio my 50th Anniversary Technics did not come with an overhang gauge, sadly. I do have a Baerwald protractor though. Just wanted to make sure it's not "wrong" to still use on a Technics in terms of wear or listening if the difference is small enough.
Good review, Frank. For me personally, for something where it tracks heavy, I can't use solvents to clean records and the stylus is not user-replaceable - meaning you just toss the whole cartridge when it's dead - that's too high a hill to climb for that price. It really, really needs to be incredibly compelling at that price for a completely disposable (I assume) cart. I hope all is well! Cheers, Tom

Sorry, I should have been more clear - the stylus is definitely replaceable. The cart is in a fixed position though, meaning you can't adjust the overhang. So it can only work on certain turntables. Interesting that they don't recommend using solvents. It sounds very good - but it is not cheap.

@@Channel33RPM I worked for Panasonic in the late 70s-early 80s... take my word. I remember that sales-rep's would say the name an inordinate number of times to impress upon buyers the proper way to say it. At the time, I was just a flunky and didn't care. Somehow, over the decades, I seem to have gotten kind of militant. Panasonic was trying to make word-play on "technical".
At 400$ i would go with a REAL hifi stylus like Nagaoka. Sorry, but 400$ for an Ortofon stylus? not gonna happen...
You used a magic number!.$400 ..I stopped the vid there!

How is it fun? You don’t mix or blend with it. You just play records! 🤦🏻
