A DIY Bed Lift for Campervan that's Under $200

I am all about space saving. But how much space can you actually save in a Ford Transit Connect? This video shows you the parts that I bought to make my very own bed lift for $200. Not counting the bed frame. A bed lift will give me a full size bed and still manage to have a sink cabinet underneath. Best of both worlds. The bed frame was made out of 1"x3" extruded aluminum. Just a simple electric motor, a drive shaft, and some seatbelts and I have myself a very simple yet effective method for raising and lowering a bed in my camper van. Something that has been very desirable with recent builds.
Honestly, I didn't think it would fit in the smallest of smalls van build with the Transit connect. But all signs point to success. Now I can build out the rest of the van!

    As I said in my other message, I was quoted over $2000 for a project 2000 bed lift complete system bed frame included here in the UK. I did manage to find another supplier who could supply the motor etc for me to install it myself and build the bed frame myself for just over $1300. I decided that if you could do it so could I. I did manage to find all the items in your list that you kindly provided, and the total cost is just over $320 here in the UK. That is, with slight modifications to your design. I will fit another bearing just after the arbor to take the load off of the motor shaft. I will fit a seat belt buckle at each mounting point of the belts, that way the belt can be released and hidden while the bed is in the down position, that way you don't see the unsightly belt hanging down while you are in bed. Again, many thanks for the inspiration and hope you return to vlogging.

    Really like the KISS design. No reason to complicate something that should be simple. Thanks for giving us the detailed supply list. That's really helpful. 👍👍

    GREAT video man. So glad I found you. Just starting van conversion. How has the motor you selected lasted you? I plan on using daily, just wondering about the longevity. Again thanks

    Good ideas. I have see people use ratchet straps (using the ratchet part at the upper mount as an adjustable length) instead of seatbelt . And awning motors as another choice.. Either way, great ideA

    Hey bud :) thanks for sharing!! This is exactly what I wanted to see. I noticed they use windscreen motors which are 20-30 gbp and seat belt polyester which is available by order cheap and I noticed they don't seem to have guides. While webbing is safer and softer, I'm wondering about cutting 1/2 8020 or using a small uni strut if applicable, top wall curve cut out as it doesn't need to be strong and using shoulder pulleys with appropriately sized and pre stretched cable which would hide in the guide rail with a channel truck. What do you think? I'm also wondering how you wired this winch, as it was mounted on the moving platform. Did you go with wires on a loose track to keep under control?

    Thank you. I appreciate the feedback and you stopping by the channel. I’m excited for this little van if I can make everything I want to do fit inside it. It’s giving me new ideas for the big ambulance build that’s next.

    Hey mate! Nice video!! Would you be able to update after using? I’m curious to know if it holds the weight while sleeping.. I’m about to build my own and this is my only concern at the moment! Thanks!

    Hey Ryan! Going to attempt to install this system in my box truck build. How would you suggest attaching the anchor support buckles to the ceiling? I see you sort of just attached them to the built in seatbelt mechanism, but unfortunately we do not have those in our truck. Should we bolt the supports to the box? or to the frame we are going to build?

    How did you solve the buckle "hooks/mounts" or whatever its called in the ceiling? I've got everything I need but haven't figured out a good way to fasten the nylon belt in the ceiling.

    Right now I have about 30lbs hanging from it and the motor still sounds strong. Granted my jump box might have been running low on the test. Still have to add plywood to the top, some sort of finished ceiling on the bottom. Then I have plans to use the bed frame as closet storage inside. So it might be a good little test on the motor here shortly. Fingers crossed emoji.

    Does the motor have to be energized for the bed to stay up in place?

  • @ryanhoffmeyer

    @ryanhoffmeyer

    9 ай бұрын

    No. The bed only draws power when moving and the motor break keeps the bed in the closed or open position. I did however add some bed supports for the frame in the corners to help take the weight when sleeping. It seems to take all the weight from being on my anchor points for the belts. I have been meaning to do another video on this. Will try to get something up soon. Thanks
