I know Disney television animation shows have been covered before, but this is the first episode covering original tv villains so it should be said here. It’s really funny how this department of Disney with less of a budget that started off selling toys would go on to create villains that were arguably just as iconic as the theatrical villains. And later on, would become the only place in Disney for good villains during the 2010’s.

I definitely think Disney was cribbing some ideas from The Smurfs for Gummi Bears. Which might be why their primary antagonist is more of a physical villain and they kept their magical antagonist in the back pocket. I could easily see a criticism at the time for Lady Bane being "She's girl Gargamel" if she were the primary antagonist.

Seeing as how Disney TV Animation's 40th birthday is this year, I've been picturing 2 AMVs to honor it: 1. Remember when Disney's Sing Along Songs did a series dedicated to the Disney princesses? I'm picturing a version of the music video If You Can Dream, except it's about the heroines from their TV shows, like Eliza Maza Luz Noceda, Kim Possible, Anne Boonchuy, Elena, etc. Rules would be that they have to be original heroines, so no Rapunzels, Ariels, or Lilos. 2. Remember the direct to video film Once Upon a Halloween? It's basically a clip show that pays tribute to Disney villains. It had five different montages. The first one was about their most iconic and scariest moments, the second one was about evil laughs, the third one was about iconic poses, the fourth about henchman (set to an original song by Pat Carroll), and the last one is, of course, about their defeats. I was thinking about a version of all of thenwith Disney's TV villains, like Bill Cipher, Draken, Doofenshmirtz, Xanatos, Belos, etc. Again, no villains from film based shows, unless they're original, like Hamsterviel or Mozenrath. Shere Khan in Talespin would be an exception, since he's a different version of the character. Anyway, this retrospective could be helpful in finding what villains to use.

@@maurycyoseka1057 YES! Well, they are in some respects. Paul Ruddish's Mickey Mouse show has a dark ride in Disney's Hollywood Studios. World Showcase has a scavenger hunt game that went from starting Kim Possible, to Perry the Platypus, to Scrooge McDuck. And there are a decent amount of meetable characters from television. But I too would prefer having more Disney show representation at the parks. There's so much missed potential. And it would be really fun to meet characters from Owl House, Star VS, Amphibia, Proud Family, Jake Long, Motor City, Wander Over Yonder, and Gravity Falls. And to bring back characters from Gargoyles, Talespin, Kim Possible, and Darkwing Duck.

12:18 to compromise your concerns and a decent backstory, I have 2 Ideas, what could happend: 1. Igthorn was a young knight with an innocent look at chivalry and knighthood. He had a " Hero", someone, who he admired (perhaps the current king). But as the story goes on, he becomes disillusioned. That the job is more mundane and the hero stories are that: Only stories, nothing more. Perhaps with a king, who gives orders, that doesn't matched with his view of knighthood and chivalry. Of course Igthorn didn't saw the bigger picture and assumed things. He thought, he can do a better job and started a coup d'etat with the well known consequences. 2. Igthorn and his brother Victor are both enlisted as knights. Both of them are great at their jobs, but Victor get's all the glory. Igthorn did his fair share of chivalry too, but it was never acknowledged and sometimes he got scolded, why he wasn't like his brother. We also see, that Igthorn was overambitious and think, that he can more. Sigmund never wanted the attention and wanted only doing his job as a knight, but could never tell Igthorn about it. Igthorn developed an inferiority complex, because the people looked down on him and his brother is (in his eyes) better than him (of course it's not true). That's why he wanted to proof to everyone (including himself) that he is better, by overthrowing the current monarch. He failed and was exiled for his crimes. Victor quit the knighthood, because he thought, it was his fault, that Igthorn lashes out. That he could prevented it, if he only talked to Igthorn, but at this point it was too late. Both version shows, that Igthorn wasn't a misunderstood good guy, who turned evil, but someone with a relatable backstory, who made the wrong decisions. But what do you think? Could it work? Are the stories decent or don't you like them? If so, why and what would you change? I'm very interested on your opinion.

Even if "The Wuzzles" was rather run of the mill, I loved the heck out of it, and found it fascinating how everything is a mix of two things right down to the weather itself. It's pretty creative world building that to me made it stand out from everything else at the time (I mean I love the Care Bears, but their world is essentially heaven in a cloud world). Although I always mentioned that Croc is weird in that he too is a mix but still remained an alligator/crocodile in terms of look. Also am I the only one that thinks his VA tried to do a Pat Burtram/Sheriff of Nothinham imitation due to the twang in his voice? That always amused me

It's great to get a glimpse into early Disney TV series, the concepts and the characters as a whole, not just the villains. With the recent additions of a pretty decent villain from Wish (direct ripoff of Ursula's "So much for true love." line not withstanding); the Stage in Playful Land event in Twisted Wonderland (showcasing Gideon and Foul Fellow "gajinkas" as our main baddies, and the first event to prominently reference the Disney parks); and the recent showcase of The Black Cauldron in another mobile game, there will have to be another catch up episode required for this series. That is saying nothing of Malleus Draconia, direct inheritor to Maleficent's legacy in Twisted Wonderland.

Gummi Bears, however, I was obsessed with them and I still feel like it's 100% watchable even today. The lore is fun and leaves me wanting more and unlike shows like Care Bears (which I also loved) it doesn't feel like it was written just for kids...it's like a Disney movie, it has something for both kids and adults. Actually in Poland Gummi Bears are hugely popular to this day and practically everyone knows this show and the characters. Even one KZreadr focusing on Polish voice actors devoted a special episode to the actors playing Ightorn and Toadie - kzread.info/dash/bejne/a6OryqidhtWah9I.html And many years as a Polish, I was a bit surprised that in US apparently Gummi Bears are largely forgotten, while in Poland there were countless reruns. The most likely reason The Wuzzles isn't available on Disney+ is due to it being a co-production with Hasbro. You may notice that both companies have a copyright on the IP. Disney had the idea for the show but saw that Hasbro had a similar idea for a toyline. Instead of getting into a legal battle over the idea, they teamed up. This is also a reason why the show only lasted 13 episodes. The other was the passing of Bill Scott, the voice of Moosel.

This was an amazing video, Colin! Although I'm a 2000s person, my mom introduced me to various 80s Disney movies and shows, which is why both The Black Cauldron and Adventures Of The Gummi Bears are special to me. Wuzzles looked like a cute show, but I'm sad it only lasted 13 episodes. My favorite Wuzzle is BumbleLion for being part lion, my favorite big cat [thanks to The Lion King and the MGM Lion]. Back to Gummi Bears, Cavin and Taran look so similar that I could easily imagine them actually being related. Taran being a lost relative of Cavin could make for good story material. Speaking of Cavin, I was always annoyed by episodes where he got in trouble for things he didn't do/things that weren't his fault [Crimson Avenger and Up, Up And Away are the two biggest examples], it frustrated me so much to the point where I wish that Gregor and Tuxford WERE allowed by the showrunners to learn about the Gummis. Speaking of the Gummi Bears themselves, Zummi's my favorite, but admitedly biased on my part as he's voiced by Paul Winchell, who voiced my favorite Winnie The Pooh character Tigger, and my favorite fast food mascot 70s era Jack [Jack In The Box]. Sadly, there's only three 1970s era animated Jack In The Box Commercials and three 70s JITB comics on KZread, but I highly recommend checking them out, as Winchell did a wonderful job bringing the characters to life. I recommend starting out with the commercial simply titled Jack In The Box Animated Commercial 1970s and the first comic How A House Makes Noise.

I kind of read up on some of these shows a bit before watching this, but only a little. The Wuzzles was more of a warm-up for The Adventures of the Gummi Bears, which was a huge gambit for Disney since the quality of the animation was much higher than its contemporaries, specifically Hanna-Barbera and Filmation, both of whom use very, shall we say, "economical" animation methods to make their shows. It's fortunate that Disney itself is a massive company that can handle licensing fees better than the other two. Either way, Gummi Bears wound up being a huge success, and led the way to other incredibly popular and fondly remembered shows. I don't recall watching Gummi Bears as much as a kid, though I definitely did watch it. There were some fun concepts, and overall, I think the premise and set-up is quite good, especially for a cartoon that came out of the 80's that was literally just Michael Eisner going "I like Gummi Bears, here, make a show based off this candy". Duke Igthorn himself is a fun first villain in a long line of memorable Disney TV villains, I especially love how he manages to boss around the much bigger but also much dumber ogres to do his bidding. Again, I wish I could say more about him, but I didn't watch that much of it as a kid and I honestly haven't had the time to revisit the show on Disney+, so I don't have much to work off of. I don't think we'll be getting any more Gummi Bears stuff out of Disney anytime soon, since they apparently couldn't even use the name when they were referenced in the DuckTales reboot, which is a shame since there's a lot of potential here. At the very least, this show wound up being a good indicator for what kind of fun Disney animated shows would follow. As for The Wuzzles, I think I ended up watching every episode of the series when it aired on Toon Disney, which isn't saying much since there were only 13 episodes. It honestly only feels fitting that Disney's first TV show was a toy tie-in (this was the result of Ronald Reagan's presidency and "deregulation", but that's a discussion for another time), like many animated shows during the 80's, even if it was mostly in preparation for the Gummi Bears. For what it's worth, the premise is kind of fun, with a lot of silly word-play and wacky combinations of various things when it comes to the premises of a lot of episodes. It's typical "slice of life" stuff in the lives of these hybrid animal characters, quite different from the more adventurous Gummi Bears show would be. Crock feels a lot like if Pete were a reptile instead of a cat-like creature, big, fat, lazy, greedy, and always causing trouble, albeit usually on a smaller scale. Don't have much to say about Flizard and Brat, I guess every bad guy needs a goon or two to deal with and take their frustrations out on. Literally never heard of "Fluppy Dogs" until this video... although perhaps I've seen the the name pop up a few times hear and there whenever I looked into Disney TV Animation. Hearing the premise when compared to the toyline reminds me of how Care Bears were essentially cute fluffy stuffed animals who's main message was "hey, show you care" or whatever, yet when it came time to have a TV show based on them, even THEY had to have bad guys like Professor Coldheart and No Heart, as well as "weaponized" caring with the Care Bear Stare. The 80's certainly were a different time. One last thing I'll add is that, looking back on the footage used for this video, my God was there some good animation in these older cartoons, even The Wuzzles had a lot of dynamic shots and details you rarely see, either from TV cartoons back in those days, or even in TV cartoons today! It's genuinely impressive stuff... most of the time.

Great Video, and happy holidays. I got to watch both the Wuzzles and Gummi Bears, and they were incredible. My main issue is how Igthorn was so compitent, but so comedic at the same time. Lady Bane is really what I like in a villain, since the main job of the villain is to constantly challenge the heroes, and I'm not saying Igthorn did that, but there was too much hilarity with him. R I. P To Bill Scott, Roger Carmel, and any other actor that passed away dfrom these shows.

While I really do enjoy your videos, I feel a minor correction is applicable here; whilst humans can only benefit from gummiberry juice once per day, *ogres* can repeatedly empower their strength by drinking fresh doses of the stuff. It's one of their few natural strengths (outside of being nearly impervious to the soporific magic of slumber sprites). So Igthorn's desire to acquire it to power-up his army makes a lot of sense, even in the earlier episodes where ogres are explicitly stronger than humans to begin with, which the series seemed to mildly retcon in later episodes.

One possible reason Igthorne gets away with so much is actually canon. The Duke is the King's brother. This would cause the King all kinds of real life medieval problems for both the king and the princess. Related to the villain? Yikes!

Also with igthorn, I always imagined the reason Igthorn went bad was cause he became disillusioned with the knight code when he felt like he should have gotten more recognition for his accomplishments: and that led to things like twisting the rules and outright scheming and backstabbing. I don’t think Gregor was a bad guy with Igthorn being good, but I think he might have been TOO forgiving of Igthorn when he was on the way to corruption, giving him too many second chances.

I did a review of Fluppy Dogs for a long-dead blog years ago, and I stand by my impression that I had back then - the pilot/special made a mistake by putting the most interesting concept for the series in the backstory instead of making it the plot. "Sliders with pastel dogs" is a more interesting concept than what the pilot set up, unless they were gonna use the Earth setting as a framing device. But that would have gotten old pretty quickly. Probably was a good idea to test the waters with the special like they did than just diving into a full series.

I also think there were parallels between the 3 main adults and the 3 kids on Gummy Bears . The older squire is a jerk who relies on brut force and wants recognition, you got the royal, and you got the nice one who isn’t as skilled but bc they are friends w the royal gets better treatment. If the series went longer I wouldn’t be surprised if the older kid got fed up and jumped ship to Ighor.

Maybe it's just me, but I figured the ogres followed Duke Igthorn because of the latter's intelligence and he probably promised them a great reward in return for their servitude. It's kind of like how the hyenas in "Lion King" followed Scar to achieve a massive food supply, only with the ogres being dumber. Though speaking of the ogres, I love that concept art of the ogre looking like a monstrous ape. And while "Wuzzles" was just okay to me, I remember enjoying Croc for his lazy personality and Southern drawl. The latter kind of reminded me of Foghorn Leghorn.

And I can tell Ratigan's video is gonna be a good one. Ps: its been a while since you've talked about Muppets (the thing that introduced me to your content), but I'm curious: out of the three designs for classic Elmo's World, which is your favourite? While I've grown up with all three of them, I always liked the second one the best, due to the toon aesthetic fitting in with what the series wanted to be. The first design, looking back, feels empty and eerie, which is the last thing you'd wanna associate with a character like Elmo. And the thid, more cgi design, while slightly fast paces, is more dull than what came before.

This was a time where I freshly got access to the (aussie) disney channel before that i had only access to cartoonetwork which at the time was mostly filled with constant reruns of hanna barbera cartoons which were much more simplistic & dull & a big chunk of the shows felt the same. One, they both have the same type of car straight down to the color scheme. Two, they both have a vendetta against dogs, which could potentially lead them to work together at One point Three, they both love using animals for their own personal benefits, with Cruella loving to wear the Coats of animals and JJ loving to showcase them as personal trophies or pets They both are quite wealthy And own large companies and businesses They're both villains hands down, and if they were both sent to the Isle of the lost, JJ could potentially have hooked up with cruel light. I don't know what exactly the legal standing on Wuzzles actually is and if Disney has 100% ownership of the property. Mattel and Dreamworks basically share the rights to He-Man, where as other Hasbro series are 100% their own. I don't know if Hasbro owns any legal attachment, but I found it suspicious that the Wuzzles episode of Ducktales 2017 doesn't even name the Wuzzle mutants, instead going for context clues and hoping some over 30 year olds were in the audience. That said, I can see why the show wasn't exactly successful. The toyline and cartoon were NOT in sync with each other. The toys were these cute, round, Care Bears-esque chubby little things and their original book fiction was syrupy sweet. But the cartoon comes out and they have wackier, cartoonier designs, the humor is dense and wacky as well, and they have voice actors famous for off the wall characters, including a reunion between Stan Freberg and Bill Scott. One of the show's running gags was Rhinokey fat shaming Hoppo. Completely day and night, and with a sly, snarky edge to it. The show only lasted a 13 season one year run, but the toy line at least managed to stuck around for a year or two with more characters added to the toys.
