The vault is terrifying, they can create an artificial scarcity which will raise prices for people who haven't discovered pirating

Seriously though, it artificially locks classic films away so people can't discover them. I'm thinking specifically here of young people who grow up with a distorted sense of film history because many films have been in Disney's vault for their whole lives.

Well, the same happens with diamonds. The difference is, keeping things away from the public only works if no one from the public has a copy. Once information goes out in any way possible, especially with content, someone will make a digital file, make a torrent and push it to pirate sites. Artificially scarcity in diamonds works because you actually need to physically break in the warehouses to grant access to the public. Holding digital content in a vault, will in the long term do more harm to the company, even if they can temporarily raise the price. The only people wanting access to the hardcover copies would be collectors.

Yes, exactly! The overall effect over time is to reduce the cannon of "classic" films that everyone loves, and leave the studio with more and more forgotten films in their vault.

@@prod.hxrford3896 Because timing is everything in comedy. The joke may be simple, the joke may be complex, but depending on the context waiting too long or belting out your punch line too fast can spoil the entire pot. Even if that joke isn't your cup of tea either because of the subject matter or its simplicity, at least understand that it would have been a vastly inferior version of that joke if there *was* hesitation. Hesitation implies regret, consideration, or forethought and all of that would make the joke less impactful both in terms of being funny and in terms of presenting the idea of him having completely been corrupted by the power of monopoly to the point of being a contradiction to its own point. The timing of a joke is... pretty rigid in terms of the mark, since when you have an audience's attention they are impacted by these little details whether they realize it or not. Having a split second too short or too long to think on the buildup to the joke can completely ruin it. It's like if you were doing that classic "interrupting cow" knock knock joke, but patiently waited for the other party to finish asking you "interrupting cow who" *before* you Moo'd in their face. Is it a funny joke? Eh, depends. I'm sure it's very impressive to second graders, but even they would have the joke ruined for them if the entire point was missed by just being even one second too late to capitalize.

I recently decided to watch some Recess for a nostalgia kick, I was legitimately surprised how objectively well written it was. Didn't expect clever social commentary, diverse range of cultural references, and experimental story telling. It isn't just good for a kids show of good with nostalgia goggles, it was actually a really great show that exposed kids to adult ideas/movies/philosophy/economics/emotions/societal structure/etc in a easy to understand and relatable way. Just watched the substitute teacher episode and I legit spit out my drink laughing at a really quick joke when Gretchen invents a perpetual energy device for a school project and suddenly government agents come in and immediately confiscate it. Feels like the writers really had fun throwing in ideas and jokes they thought were funny and trusted kids to be able to follow along instead of pandering to them

Washington specifically stepped down willingly...twice. He forfeited his role as general and his office as president without pressure from others, who would have let him sit for the rest of his life undoubtedly. Jefferson also showed great restraint in how he acted as president, taking the Constitution very strictly, only bending the rules when he knew it would benefit the country greatly, like the Louisiana Purchase. And Franklin never wanted political power to begin with. These men were some of the most noble leaders in history because they didn't want to lead. They were more concerned about the common good and allowing people to live in freedom. Fuck Jackson.

I remember when Wreck It Ralph 2 came out, my theater only had two showings, and my manager emailed a Disney rep to explain that she was going to remove a showing of Nutcracker: The Four Realms in order to make space for Wreck It Ralph. The Disney rep (probably following a template response) threatened to prevent Disney-owned films from showing at our theater ever again. It's such an over-flex for the situation, but it is scary how crippling that would be for a theater. Edit: To specify, Disney was so protective of Nutcracker that they threatened us, even though removing Nutcracker for Ralph would be far more profitable. They’re *that* concerned with maximizing profits, but not smart enough to listen to common sense.

There's something really screwed up about the product dictating the marketplace. When Disney puts out a film, they're basically selling people the rights to re-sell a movie to an audience and if that product isn't valuable then it only makes sense that people wouldn't buy it. But NOPE! The people making the products are able to just force people to purchase their products, and because most people aren't theater owners it's just fine for them. Definitely feels like that crap should be illegal or something.... I mean, imagine if I went into a Gamestop and they didn't let me buy the new Devil May Cry unless I also bought SFV, Fallout 76, Star Wars Battlefront 2, and some random Sports title. Nobody would want to stand for that crap!

Yes, it's kind of hard to make many sequels/prequels when you don't own any IP like Pixar in 1995 and very easy when you have some very good and successful IP like Pixar in 2006. Also, Pixar, in average, made more original films between 2007 and 2017 than between 1995 and 2006. During the earlier period, they released an original film (not counting Toy Story 2 as the only not original story) every two years (or 0.5 films/year). During the newer period they released 0.7 original films/year. Which makes things better for everyone. Those who don't like sequels/prequels still get more content from Pixar (and in my opinion, the content itself got better, I'm sure that if it wasn't for nostalgia, I wouldn't be rewatching Toy Story and Monsters Inc like I rewatch Coco and WALL-E). And those who also like sequels/prequels can get more content from franchises they already love.

Recess also has lessons on political strategy. In the episode where they would vote for a Student Body President, T.J. and Vince employed a strategy where they introduce an additional rival candidate to run a similar campaign to Gretchen's. The goal was to split Gretchen's base so that Vince would have a majority vote and win. Recess definitely challenged the intelligence of its audience and it had such good writing.

I noticed Disney might be getting too out of hand when they created Disney Plus. I mean, come on. Creating their own streaming platform where you can only get their classics on there? My problem doesn't lay with Disney keeping their movies and shows to their own streaming Platform. Netflix and Amazon make their own films too and only allow them on their own respecting streaming services. There's nothing wrong with that. It's no different than Comedy Central creating the Chappelle and then not allowing the Chappelle Show on a channel like BET. No my real problem with Disney is they are buying up and ruining everything! I love Star Wars and they've taken it, applied their Disney virus, and ruined it. They bought up Marvel so instead of getting great super hero movies we are left with a zillion plot holes and 50 zillion marketing possibilities. Now this will back fire on Disney. If they keep making shit films then people will stop watching them. People quit buying Ford Model Ts when Chevy began selling cars with better looks and different colors. The same thing will happen to Disney. My family is one of those people. We are not paying for Disnet + just so that we can watch the Disney classics that we already own on DVD. "Oh but PJ. You're missing out on the Mandalorian." Yeah I don't care. I already saw season one. It's alright but it's not that big of a deal. Hell the only episode that got me pumped was the finale of season 1 when Luke shows up. But even then I'm not paying their huge price tag for just one show that I'll binge watch over a weekend and then close the app for the rest of the year. Disney can follow my magical bouncing balls. Stupid Nazi mouse.

i always try to legally watch things, pretty much the only times i pirate anything it's when companies like Disney refuse to stream it or sell it, or TV channels rarely if every air a show. There was recently a TV show i was trying to watch that stopped airing years ago and there is no legal way to purchase it, the only people selling it are a few collectors who bought the few DVD's they sold years ago and it would cost me roughly $5-$7 per episode to buy them (not per season, per episode). There are also alot of old movies and TV shows that the producers have either abandoned the IP or they've sold off the rights and someone essentially has it in their own "disney vault" indefinitely, so the only place to get it is either finding someone on Ebay selling a copy for an inflated amount or to pirate it. What do companies expect people to do when they either refuse to sell something or they want an insane amount for it? Moonshining was rare until prohibition and dropped stiffly when it was legalized again, because people prefer to buy legally for a fair price rather than buy illegally even if it's cheaper.

I was miserable in school and got C's and B's until they opened a sort of home school program where you can do all your class work and home work at home and essentially teach yourself using the exact same curriculum and just turn everything in once a week. I was able to get all my work done for the week in roughly 6-8 hours and my grades went from a roughly B- average to a B+ or A- average, and i was ALSO able to start working part time at a technical school towards me eventual career. Schools are more of a child prison/state funded babysitting service than they are about teaching anything.

What you're saying at the end is true but also misleading, as the disney acquisitions most effect theaters and traditional media/services. These days there are actually way more options to have a film produced and published than ever before. It used to be the big studios and maybe some independents, and everyone else had to get private funding and go to like Sundance or straight to home video to get their film seen. These days the streaming platforms are a huge competing service, while offering a more convinient and more cost effective option. Now you have Netflix, Amazon, Apple, even Hulu (though it's owned by Disney its management and greenlighting process is different), and other upcoming streaming platforms creating original film and show content. A lot of what gets made now is more unique and diverse than ever bc these services reward more interesting ideas, have more need to produce films, and have much more cost effective ways to get it to a large audience.

No, part of the issue that led towards the Paramount Decision was the lack of access someone back in that day would have to see a different studio’s movie. Today, access to streaming entertainment is essentially universal - anyone wanting to watch Netflix is also capable of watching Disney+. A good amount of shows are also funded by the studio as incentive to provide their viewers with entertainment. Just like the Paramount Decision didn’t include television channels (which would be ludicrous), they should not include streaming services as well. The death of theater is not coming about because of the death of access - it is rather the abundance of access that leaves the audience of today less reason to go out and watch a movie like they did before.

  • @francoisrd

    @francoisrd

Jonathan Juan wrong. Everyone can pay to access any one streaming service, but you need to pay for 7+ to access all the content. But not everyone can afford 100$/month in subscription fees. So access is, in fact, restricted. The Paramount Case needs to updates to include streaming. Companies like Netflix should be lobbying for it, since they will soon go bankrupt with Disney+ around.

@@francoisrd ^this. the problem with streaming services is best shown with Anime streaming, since individual streaming services have exclusive licenses to each of the anime that they distribute. the problem is that this has led to an explosion of pirated anime, since the prices for individual streaming services quickly add up, and none of them are under any obligation to provide all their content in all regions equally. a service can choke an anime simply because of how they handle it's adaptation and distribution, since there is an artificial lack of competition for each service.

If they were bound to lose rights to a franchise by it becoming public propertie, they could'nt afford hanging on to franchises too long. Arguably, dismantling the companies could have a bad effect on the economy as well. If you're just talking about studios splitting off from them, then that'd be fine, but if you outright took down those big companies and didn't leave a sizable amount of smaller ones in its place, you'd have a problem. The best way to deal with Monopolies is competition, since then prices are lowered, and, with entertainment, more risks are taken and true gems are created.

Excellently said, written, and executed. Your use of music in videos is clever and your arguments are put simply and entertainingly. This is an issue I bring up often, and it delights me to see someone explain it so perfectly. Well done.

Clark Strange, sorry for the long reply, but important. Not insulting our founding fathers, I have respect for them. I was Insulting the “crypto-humans” behind our phony FIAT, pay-to-borrow currency called the US dollar. The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 passed by Woodrow Wilson handed America’s banks over to a private banking cartel in Europe. Every dollar we print, we owe 30% to a privately owned, offshore NON-AMERICAN banking corporation. This our 22 trillion debt. We cannot be in debt to ourselves.

The Mouse House has WAY more control than you give them credit for. Hollywood is a small town and you don't piss off the Disney gods unless you are a literal star. Even then.... it's risky business. No one dares cross Disney because it is a career ender unless they have already made it.

I knew that it wasn’t good that Disney was taking over these different studios, but I fully grasp the kinds of damage they were doing until I saw this video. Also, the Recess example was a good way to lead into what Disney’s actually doing. Thanks for your time and effort, this was really informative.

@Lyoko920 Disney cancelled many Fox movies, because they just won’t work. Films are cancelled everyday in Hollywood. Disney fired many employees, because they were non-essential as they already had counterparts at Disney.

Any company having a monopoly on forms of media as influential as movies, TV, news, newspapers, whatever it is, is always an extremely dangerous thing, and the whole reason the United States is supposed to look down on concepts like monopolies isn't because "it's unfair," it's because we have rights, and are supposed to be able to expect respect, as well as realistic content (as opposed to propaganda or misinformation,) from the providers of media services. Other countries-like Russia, Germany, and countless others-have made the historical mistake of allowing dictatorial, or soon-to-be-dictatorial, leaders, rise to power and take the same sort of control over various types of media as Disney has in the US, and those media outlets become dangerous propaganda machines for the unethical leader(s) at hand Now let's talk about Disney. Disney is a family friendly, kids' content creator, right? Well, not exactly. They do make that sort of content, but they make all kinds of content for both kids and adults. Plus, Disney has more than a little bit of history to reaffirm anyone's decision to rethink their trust in Disney's content decisions. In other words, Disney has already done some pretty gross and unethical stuff. Disney has historically supported Naziism, sexual deviance, and a lot more stuff, whether it's the subconscious imagery found aaallllllll throughout all the classics, or Disney's affinity for working with the government to make various kinds of influential pieces meant to sway public opinion about something the government wants to do, but the public generally oppose. That last piece is the definition of propaganda, and Disney has already engaged in this sort of thing on countless occasions. This would be far too long if I listed examples, but if you're not lazy then I'm sure you can find yourself a decent intro by making a quick Google search. A company like Disney, which has (at least arguably,) already produced propaganda for the American government, now has a monopoly over movies, one of history's greatest methods of disseminating propaganda, both in the US and abroad. It's suspicious and untrustworthy, at _very_ best. At worst, it's transparent and not surprising.

Regarding the 1948 Paramount Case, I would argue that the biggest circumvention of the spirit of this law is the emergence of services such as Disney+. With this, we're back to a similar situation to when studios owned cinemas, and can keep their films exclusive to them.
