It was a quiet night down at MB2 Raceway in Sylmar, CA this past week, so I decided to give a quick overview of the principles behind a proper racing line, including braking, steering, passing techniques, as well as what that proper line is on the current layout at MB2. Before the night was over, I got to meet a fan (wasn't expecting that!). His name is Jaden, and he's only been karting for a couple of weeks. We'll get him up to speed in due time ;).

    If you know where to lift slightly on corner-entry - you can use the understeer and soon as you feel the front-tyres grip - then get back on the throttle

    For polished concrete, it's a pretty good surface. If you've driven anywhere with an asphalt surface though, you'll notice a bit of difference.

  • @TwoFlagsMotorsports

    Every turn is different. Some require you to brake, others you can just lift, and others still you can take full throttle. As a general rule, you want the car to be balanced entering a corner as much as possible; this helps to ensure the most traction. Sometimes you'll need to brake or lift, not necessarily to slow down, but to transfer the weight of the car back to neutral. (Most of the weight of the car is rear-biased under acceleration.) Also, you want to brake in straight lines as much as possible. Turning while under braking puts you in a position where the car's weight is front-biased which, again, is not going to provide as much traction. There is a technique called "trail braking" where you enter the turn under braking and gradually reduce your brake input as you get further into the turn - this is an advanced technique though, and it's not always necessary.

    @@TwoFlagsMotorsports but how i will know where i'm going to brake for transfering the weight of the car back to neutral?

    If the car is understeering or oversteering in a given turn. Understeering means you need more traction over the front wheels; oversteering means you need more over the rear wheels. You will learn to feel the weight shift the more time you spend driving. At any given time, pay attention to which way the g-forces are pulling on your body - the weight balance of the car will mimic that. Other things like how heavy the steering feels and how much traction you have under acceleration will let you know also.

  • @TwoFlagsMotorsports

    Yes; you can see some other videos on my channel for outdoor racing. Running too wide on turn exit usually means you will not be able to carry as much speed as possible out of the turn, which leaves you vulnerable to being passed. (You'll feel understeer coming out of the corner if this is the case.) In general, try to open up your line on turn entry so you can use more of the track before you apex. Possibly also apex later in the turn so you can take a narrow exit (close to the track limit) which will allow you to stay straighter.

    Two questions: Are racing lines in racing cars the same as karts? And if you in a tight corner I see many people drift in these corners and it looks the fastest way around but is it faster than the line?

  • @TwoFlagsMotorsports

    @TwoFlagsMotorsports

    In answer to the first question - it depends. The general principles of the racing line are true for all vehicles; karts, cars, motorcycles, etc. However, there are nuances to each vehicle that may result in subtle changes in things like turn entry, braking & throttle points, etc. Most of that depends on the total weight of the vehicle, weight bias of the vehicle, the amount of drive wheels, the orientation of the drive wheels (rwd, fwd or 4wd) and the overall level of grip. We had car guys come race with us every now and then. Some of them fit right in; others had to adjust their driving style. Guys that did more open-wheel racing found karting more intuitive, whereas those who raced traditional cars needed a little adjustment to their driving style to get the most out of the karts. As a general rule though, time in karts will make you a better car driver, regardless. In answer to the second question - drifting is about the orientation of the car, not the racing line. Most drifters utilize what can roughly be called a proper racing line in their competitions; the difference is that the orientation of their car is not the same as it would be if they were trying to carry maximum speed. Most of the time, drifting will be slower, but there are exceptions. Rallying is a good example of where drifting/sliding can be the fastest way around a corner. Cornering on dirt and/or in very tight spaces is usually done more efficiently with a controlled drift, as it sets the car up for the exit of the turn earlier, allowing the driver to get on the throttle sooner than they would otherwise. On a standard race circuit and/or in vehicles with low power output (like these karts) though, drifting will be slower.

    It depends on the corner and what your intention is. If you find the right line around any given track, you will use the brakes less than someone who is offline. With that being said, there are other reasons for braking & lifting besides just slowing down. A common secondary use for braking is to shift the weight balance of kart before going into a turn; only lifting off of the throttle doesn't necessarily do the same thing.

    Depends on the type of corner. Fast comers with are long and curve gradually, you can just lift the throttle if your car doesn't have a lot of understeer taking the corner. On hairpins and slow corners. You need to brake and brake efficiently so you can accelerate at the apex and take the corner quicker. General rule of thumb, late braking (if your brakes are good) allows for fast entry, slow exit (best when when the run off area is small till the braking zone of the next corner). Early braking allows for slow entry, fast exit (great for long straights). The racing line is the fastest but requires a lot of space. When overtaking, you have to choose one of the other two or you'll never pass them. Hope this helps!!

    why a cart have no mirrors? than you can better deffend your position and it is more savety. i mean i do carting a lot. and if i drive on a regular day, no race event. i am 3 4 seconds quicker than the other drivers. that means they are suppriesed when i am sidie by side with them out of nowhere. some guys get shocked turn away from me and ending in the barrier. and is it a race day, i wont see what is the guy doing behind me like i said
