A Different Kind of Photography
I received an invitation from fellow landscape photographer, Andy Gray, to try something a little different; ICM photography. The ICM stands for Intentional Camera Movement. I have tried this kind of photography in the past, but I have never taken the time to delve deep until now. Andy shows me some great techniques and gives me plenty of hints and tips which help create some unique and unusual images.

This is for me. At 73 I find it hard to keep the camera still 😀

Richard is this your age or the speed he was doing holding a camera? I looked to be 74 mph to me.

Richard, Oh, Man, as an "oldie" every shot of mine is filled with unintentional movement (shaky hands) only interrupted by frequent visits to the loo. Fortunately my eyes are knackered so I can't see the faults and i'm going deaf so I can't hear the criticism. Now where did I put that ND filter???? :-)

Apparently, David could not keep his camera still at a much younger age and opted for this so-called style of photography.
Oh my gosh, this is so fun. I rushed outside and took some photos of a small windmill at 1/6 of a second and got a few crazy images. This is going to be great fun. Thanks Tom and Andy,
Very cool stuff. With Parkinson’s, my tripod has become essential for traditional landscape photography, but I am really looking forward to giving this a try. Who knows, maybe my involuntary movements will give some unique, ethereal images. Thanks Tom :)

That would be amazing, to take what could be considered a challenge and use it to make your art unique!
Stellar job on editing this together Tom, having now seen all the work you put in behind the scenes I truly take my hat off to you Sir! A quick skim through the comments here and not everyone hates me, so thats nice! 😉 Thanks for all you said here, and thanks for the huge increase in my admin this morning!.. 😂 Looking forward to seeing if you continue this in Iceland. Oh and thanks for breakfast!! 😃👍
Photography is an Art right? That's what gives unlimited possibilities to people's creativity. Thanks for sharing! Truly great technique I can't wait to try as well!

So agree with your comment!
Wow all those blurry wildlife shots I have now I can consider them as artistic.
I walked straight out of my front door and tried this. It may not be for everyone, but it is what I have been looking for ever since I first held a camera - thank you both so much.
This is why we love your channel, i become better in photography with each video i watch in ur channel
I did it too. From my last vacation I had a blurry picture which I always found cool. With this technique, the result is STUNNING. Thanks Andy and thank you Thomas
Had my doubts when I saw the title and watched the beginning, but changed my opinion as I watched the rest of the video and was blown away by the images created. Reminds me very strongly of a Turner painting. Can't wait to try myself.
Andys work is stunning. Reminds me of A turner painting. Thanks for sharing. This is something that i am inspired to do.
Wow, Andy is a true master of this technique. His images are amazing.
I'm surprised. I didn't think I'd be interested in this style, but by the end of the video it's become something I'd like to try. Love your 3rd shot!
Thanks for sharing about Andy and his ICM art style. I’ve been in a Photography slump lately and this has given me just the inspiration to get out there again. Also makes me pleased I never deleted all those shaky or out of focus shots. It’s winter here so will use the rainy days to go back through my library. Love your channel and appreciate all the hard work you put into it and your photography.
Oh! I like, very much! Both Andy’s imagery, and you showcasing not just other photographers, but getting out there with them. Fabulous watch! Thank you!
I didn't even make it through half way before I paused, adjusted the settings on my camera, and tried this out. What a fantastic new idea to try out! Excellent video.
Andy have some beautiful photos there! This is the part of landscape photography I really like. How diverse it can be. Always enjoy to watch other kinds of interpretation of the subject :)

Thanks Mads. Love your work! 😃
I love ICM but have always been very hit and miss with my technique. Really felt I’ve learnt something from this. Headed over to Andy’s channel to find out more. Thumbs up from me.
That is probably the most inspirational video I've seen in a very long time! Thank you Thomas! Thank you Andy! I'm going to pack my gear tonight and head out early tomorrow morning! I'm itching to try out that technique! You guys rock! Thanks again!
Some of Andy's images really touch me. So beautiful! The colours are amazing and instead of showing a scene that is plain and simple, he creates something that triggers my own imagination. It's more something you feel than see. By the way, your first image is my favorite. It has a lot of story to it. Would have been nice if you had allowed Andy to talk in the video. Now he was like a part of the background, while in fact the whole video is about his style of photography.

I'm not very talkative (especially with a camera infront of me and knowing how many people watch Tom) 😂
Love this kind of stuff. Both learning new techniques, and watching a great photographer try something new! Keeps the channel fresh. Thanx!
Brilliant Tom love your last two images will defo give that a try keep them coming
We enjoy learning with and from you, Thomas! Awesome video, thanks.
I loved this video, thanks! Don't let anyone question your technique. For me seeing a picture it's all about how I feel about it. This is definitely art.
Andy inspired me a while ago to take up abstract photography although my images are not the same as his it has given me back the passion in my photography. Glad you enjoyed the day.
Thanks, that was something new to me. I love trying out new things and this may not be something I do much of, but will be fun to try out.
Awesome whiplash noise .. Too helpful and will sure look at this new aspect of photography for me Thanks to you for the intro
I’ve seen Intentional Movement shots before but Andy is amazing. I think once you got the hang of things your shots got better and better but more the kind of thing I’d like where you can still see the subject. Really did love your last shot, you made it look like an Oil Painting
Love that last one. Truly looks like a classic painting. Beautiful.
Thank you, Thomas. I did not know Andy and am so glad you've introduced him and his gorgeous work. I played around a bit with ICM a few years ago, but I didn't know about or think about the differences that Photoshop could bring out. I have always loved that ethereal look. This is really awesome.

Quite clearly, strong Turner's influence. So British, ha ha! I love the idea, heading straight to Andy's channel. Thanks!
Thomas, thanks for highlighting other photographers. Your stuff was great. You make really great content.
Love this! I have been doing it for nighttime city shots but must now do it daytime! Thanks so much.
Interesting and very different images. ICM is something I keep thinking about trying out and the long summer days may just be the best time to give it a go... Thanks for sharing
An interesting watch, and look forward to watching Andy's channel. Your third image looks very watercolor-esque, and I guess the best images will be from a great ICM image plus some great post-processing to get the best look.
That actually really inspired me. I knew that I'm lacking a style but i never really got the motivation to find my style. I just take landscape pictures but they often just look nice. They don't have feelings in it. Now I got motivated to give me the time (even if it might take long) to find my style. Thank you!
Nice to finally see a video on this type of photography. I've had some of these happen over the years, a few of them even worked out.
I Absolutely love this. Something inspiring to try on an uninspiring photography day out. Cheers Tom and Andy!
What a technique! This opens a new way on my photography. Thanks for sharing.
Great to see you out with Andy! Although not a fan of ICM I love Andy’s work because of Andy and how much he puts into it!

Love you too Mali! 😘😜
I have been following you for the last year or so and recently had a bing watch from the very beginning of your journey. Oh how things have changed from the beginning. You have definitly up'd your game over the last 4 years. Even more so since you started to meet up with other vloggers like Gavin, Andy and Nick, all of whom I have started to follow. you all make a great team. My reason for commenting now is to say thank you, I am or was a photographer starting off doing weddings, portraits and god help me, baby shoots. I had to step back from all of that due to work commitments as I was unable to get a footing as a full time photographer. I was about to give up on photography altogether but since I started to watc you, you have given me a huge boost in pushing my photography again. You have inspired me to get back out there. Though the wife is not overjoyed as I sold most of my equipment and now need to replace everything (baby steps ) I have one question though, How does your wife put up with you galavanting all over the world? Let me know your secret lol Anyway Thomas keep up the good work and again, Thank you !!!
Fun stuff, thanks for sharing Thomas!
Great video Tom😊 love to see and learn something new! Have a great week buddy! Keep inspiring
Wonderful video. Thank you. Will try this myself
Great to see Andy in your vlog. Such a nice guy!
I must admit, not being familiar with Andy's work, that I was skeptical at the beginning of this video and did not think I was gonna buy into it. Wow, was I wrong. Those are some very interesting and beautiful images. I'm a fan. Thank you.
Great video this week Thomas. Thanks.
Wery nice Thomas. Im looking forward to to see you implementering this tecnik on "bad" days in your daily work.
Another great "different style" master to me is Ray Collins. Although his wavescapes are taken in maximun action they have an incredible soothing aura to them that gets me every time.
I'm off to Holy island soon I cant wait to try these thecnhiques. I have been photographing Holy island for over 20 years and something new is so good to try.
Thomas, I really enjoyed this video, especially since I've just started to explore ICM too and I've been incorporating it with my traditional woodland and landscape photography or when I'm out on a Kayak. I hope you continue with this genre and share your images.
Great vlog love ICM very artistic some very useful tips here to try out love it !!
That's something different! Thanks Thomas for showing this!
Thanks Tom and Andy, I've been trying this type of thing on my own, happy to know about Andy's channel.
As a former abstract painter, I was over the moon to see Andy’s work. Thank you for this episode. Wonderful and thoroughly enjoyed it.
wonderful and opening plenty of new ideas for me!
mmmm ok not really sure about this. but I will give it a try. One thing you can't knock is Andy's images are a work of art and really atmospheric. Food for thought and another KZread subscription coming up I think. Thanks for the video.
I don't do enough landscape photography, but I do quite a bit of Motorsport, I'm always trying to pursue that perfect panning shot, balancing a Sharp subject with a blurred background to give that sense of speed. However it's very hard to stand out and be different when so many do it. ICM could be a complete game changer. As always brilliant video.
Great stuff Thomas, cant wait to give it a go !
Love it! A very odd time, depending on what I'm shooting (if it works well) I do a zoom burst. During, say a 10 sec exposure, I slowly zoom out and leave the remaining 3 seconds say to have a tunnelled view of your subject of interest. Like rocks on beach or a person. It's fun. I never tried this technique before (except the accidental ones) so I must give it a try. Thanks for a great video and fair play to you for trying new things.
Great video and images! I love ICM I just never remember to do it when I'm out shooting. Thanks for the inspiration!
Hi Thomas, thanks for posting this. It's always interesting to venture out of one's comfort zone; it tends to open up creative outlets or provide insight into one's particular passions. This must have been particularly challenging for you as someone who prefers images tack sharp from front to back; having nothing sharp must have bothered you. This video is particularly timely as I'm going to Hawaii in a few days, so may find some interesting opportunities there for this style of shooting. Watching Andy's series from image selection to post-processing images shows that this requires fairly involved editing...it's not a few tweaks and done (although yours seemed to be such and were quite lovely!).
I love how the images look like oil paintings. So beautiful. I'm definitely trying this next time...
Great video, thanks for sharing this video and technique. Looking forward to trying this out. I preferred your 2nd image.
Nice to see something fresh on the photography scene. Inevitability this sort of thing like long exposure clouds starts to become over done and just posting an image of having done the technique is enough to satisfy a lot of people the image was worth posting. Some people think it is the trendy thing to do and probably a lot of them have never seen the work of the originators or good examples of using it expressively.
Have seen some nice ICM images before but never actually tried it. Yours and Andy's images were fantastic and very inspiring, will definitely give it a go 👍
Thank you for sharing this technique. I have tried something similar, shooting at night in burst mode while holding my shutter button down and aiming my lens at any light source available, but this seems much more artistic.
That was very cool and great job putting that together.
Truly wonderful invite Thomas to a new approach to capture, and artistic interpretation thru the lens. Thanks, I REALLY enjoyed that.... And by the way, you continue to make your videos enjoyable and entertaining, covering new ground w/ friends and locations, as well as humourful and educational.
Made me pick up my camera and try it , thanks for the inspiration Tom. Andy rocks it.
I can see that there is going to happen a new photography style movement in the near future: Impressionistic Blurrism / Andy Style photography. It probably is here to stay. So inspiring. Gonna try it out!
Absolutely love everything about this. That final pic is awesome
Andy's work is great , nice to see something different .
Thanks for sharing that! Very interesting. Really love these images!
I’ve known Andy’s work and always admired it. I used the same technique with the iPhone and the Spectre app (long exposure) to create some abstract wallpapers to give to my Instagram followers and I must say I did enjoy doing that, but never tried with my landscape photography. I shall do it now. Thanks guys, great watching you both :)
Love this video! Thank you!
I love abstract photograph. Always think how it's clicked. Thanks for sharing this.
Love the first image. Loved the texture and grunge. Gotta try this technique.
What an awesome place! Liked first photo a lot. It was beautiful and interesting. Thank you Thomas. Good luck!
Interesting stuff. always looking for something different to do.So much that I went right out into the garden to have a go after watching this haha. Now to see what I got! thanks Tom.
Impressed by the images. Great work.
Nice expansion of your photo repertoire. Your 3rd photograph had a pleasing watercolor look.
Can't wait to get out and try this!
The first photo at 6:25 gave me chills. What a stunning painting. 😉
Awesome video - would welcome more like these!
Thanks for sharing this technique, Thomas! I always tried to do this Turner impressionist style in-camera, but I always failed to. I think it's time to practice what you showed us!
First I hear of this, very cool, just followed Andy on Insta, thanks Tom!
This is brilliant, I’ve already cleared my schedule for the weekend and I’m going to fill up my card.
I have tried a little of this but never knew to hold the camera steady for a bit before moving it. I think that is what my photos have been missing. Definitely going to try it again!
oh boy! Can't wait to try this out tomorrow :)
Genuinely intriguing. Need to try this out sometime soon. Definitely a technique I'd love to add to my skill set. A way of painting with the camera.
I’m watching this in the wee hours as I can’t sleep and I read ICM as International Camera Movement 😆. So I’m thinking there must be some international worldwide movement or something...doh! Very interesting technique with some beautiful images that were more like paintings, will definitely give this a try.
So cool! Gotta try this!
love it! it's like digital painting with the camera!
I was there, at the hour zero, when entire Instagram decided to copy Andy Gray. I know it because I will copy him tomorrow.

That was very interesting. Andy's work, which I'd never seen before, has some of the spirit of JMW Turner, in my view.
This was awesome! I can’t wait to try!
