What I love about Taemin's musicality is that he approaches each song as if it were a script, analyzing who the character is singing the song and performing it as that character. He doesn't just sing pretty notes, he infuses real emotions into his vocals and his entire performance. He wants his audience to feel his music deeply, internally, it's an experience, not a song you listen to and think "that's nice," and promptly forget.

yes! he has a great understanding of character and voice, and i think that plays a huge role in his overall ability to manipulate his vocal technique and make interesting choices that fit the identity of each song exactly right. he's such an incredible artist for this reason, and i just love him for it

Great analysis, thanks so much! As a musician myself I totally agree with your points. Taemin’s musicality, the way he uses it in his vocal and dance performances is probably a main reason I consider him an outstanding artist and why he is my number one favorite and most appreciated artist in Kpop. Of course it has to do a lot with the music that he offers, which is most of the time 100% my style, but I noticed that even if he releases something that is usually not my style it still becomes my favorite due to his unique, musically satisfying delivery. That’s his genius - he can convince me to listening to some music I wouldn’t have otherwise listened.

Taemin uses his voice to "play" with his music. This is one of the main things I love about his music and why he is my favorite artist, as I'm a geek about literary elements and analysis. It's not just limited to his title songs either. Anyone who has listened to his songs "Impressionable", "Mystery Lover", "Light", and "Strings" knows exactly what I mean. My favorite is "Impressionable" which, when you peel away the layers of the lyrics and you realize the message the song is really conveying, is an absolute masterpiece. Taemin is no longer just given songs either. He chooses his songs and manipulates or changes the lyrics to match his concepts. In addition, he will actually rearrange the music to fit those lyrics and feelings he's going for. He co-directed and co-produced his 2020, 2-part album "Never Gonna Dance Again". He said he wanted to make sure the concepts matched what was in his head and conveyed his cohesive message throughout the album. Even his concepts of Stockholm syndrome and Plato's Theory of Forms, both very unconventional, were specific to that messaging.

absolutely agree! many of his songs have a lot of layered, metaphoric, often unconventional lyrics and thematic identities, and i think it's incredible how well taemin seems to understand these and convey them in his delivery of a line. everything is so cohesive, and that makes his music so interesting and satisfying to listen to

Not sure how you got on my list, but I'm glad. As a university professor (retired), I must say that your video is researched, written, and presented very well. One of the more interesting things about his solo journey is that it mirrors his life and relationship with being an idol, from the seductive draw of fame (Want) to his finding his own voice in a restrictive and controlled industry (Advice). I watched a video interview with him talking about his creative process. He gives great thought to every detail of his art. Yes, Taemin and SHINee are deservedly my ult, still killing it 15 years later when most groups don't last half that long. Thanks for the video!

thanks! in the past i've spent a lot of time listening to taemin's music, picking apart things that i heard and liked and just thinking about why i liked them, and that process is what led to this video. i definitely agree that there is a clear progression across taemin's solo work that parallels his own journey, and i think that makes it so much more interesting to hear him talk about his process. his attention to detail really stands out in every release, and his ability to emulate character through his performance is incredible. definitely one of the best artists out there!

I rarely see discussion of phrasing and vocal delivery in k-pop, but they are potentially as powerful as an instrumental or an artist's vocal skill. Both Taemin by himself and SHINee together can make a sometimes mediocre song into an enjoyable experience just through their unique interaction with a song and each other.

For me personally there a huge difference between singer and an artist, singer will sing song perfectly but will not evoke much emotion in you, but true artist like Taemin will make you an invisible character of that story feeling ALL and each emotion like they are yours. Taemin doesn't simply sing a song, he embodies the concept: each note, each choreo move, each scene in his iconic MVs is a well thought choice to deliver the message he wants to convey. Taemin is all round Artist with capital A, trully once in generation talent ❤

I thank the YT Gods for sending me this recommendation. While I've read a fare bit about the K-pop industry (in terms of structure and contrast to "western" music publication) I have really wanted to hear and learn from a serious analysis of K-pop artists musicality beyond simply an analysis of what instruments are employed and basic song structure. Thank you for this. Oddly enough my inner musical soul somehow groups Taemin not with Michel Jackson - but Barbra Streisand. They both have a perfectionist's respect for phrasing choices, enunciation, playing with the contrast between the vocal/stylistic choices and the musical structure. Each, in their own way, passing their performances off as though it is off the cuff when it is anything but spontaneous. Taemin, like Streisand, hides his technique/choices so well. They're vocalists from different eras, different genres, different cultures and some how my musical soul wants to draw a line connecting them. Again, thank you for this. For the seriousness with which your analysis respects Taemin as an artist. Much appreciated.

His phrasing and vocal dynamics engage the audience and take us on the journey. He is an evocative storyteller and by far my favorite performer and SHINee is my favorite group. Nice to see a Taemin fan talking about his vocal technique specifics instead of "omg his voice is so emotional". Maybe someone will finally explain another mystery: how do people know how good Taemin is at delivering specific emotion at specific points, when they don't even know Korean at 3rd grade level?

What a fantastic analysis! Thank you! The songs that you picked are very distinct Taemin and most kpop songs are no match to them. What makes Taemin the king of kpop is the symbiosis of his body language in performance, which is an interpretation of the song, and his dramatic voice. Songs like "Heaven", "Love" or "Holy Water" show his vocal range which might not be as big as other singers but what he does with it is very touching and recognisable. I love the way everything means something in the lyrics and the fact that it is, as you clearly said, darkness and sensuality that drives this solo career, reflects a lot about what he thinks about, wants to be or is interested in. A lot of kpop solo arrists still need to please the audience with stuff they are used to. I never ever felt that with Taemin, even when he probably had little control over his music in 2014.

Thank you for this in depth analyzation of Taemin! He had always be my ultimate bias from the first time I had heard Advice, I just thought he had this kind of genius no one in the industry possess, in both his dance and music I see and feel his strong artistic intent and thinking, which just completely blows me away with how crazy talented he is . I think from both music and dance aspects Taemin is truly the king of Kpop, really hope he gains more attention and love for his incredible talent !

Can we also talk about taemin's concept and repeated use of religious symbolism? I think Want and Idea show it the clearest, but I'm pretty sure Taemin is supposed to be the fallen archangel Lucifer. (or not, just the snakes surrounding him, the literal gates of hell appearing behind him, wearing a lot of red (in want), being in a while heaven like location and then being in a dark on fire location (in idea)) I just don't know of another idol that can express this theme so thoroughly and embody a character like that. Like Taemin can be so captivating on stage its scary!

This was incredibly informative and insightful. I think you are correct. I was only able to notice his incredible ability to communicate intent through his singing, in the remastering of "AMIGO" in part 2 of MMTG, believe it or not. And I think, like you said, it is about 2 things that he does. Essentialy, his sensibility and intelligence in making musical decisions, and his ability to execute them, I'd say, perfectly (almost at the drop of a hat). This contributes to an incredibly curated and elevated end product. This is truly an artform. That was the moment I realised people do not just underestimate his vocal skills, they underestimate them greatly, and also underestimate the level of musicianship and artistry that he is playing at, 15 years into his brilliant carreer.

Controversial but I'm coming from a place of wanting everyone to shine. I'm a multistan but I wish suju members's solos are given the same "artistic touch" like. I'm not sure if it's totally because of the person soloing or the company not providing creative direction enough for suju team. I'm not saying the suju solos were bad, but they can be better and sm artists in general are talented at least in their vocal and performance dept. SHINee members are the perfect example of musical creativity under a pop company without losing their own color. The suju vocal line should explore some creative direction to break the regular ballad format just like Onew did. Ryeowook definitely needs to express some more divan-ess like how key does it. D&E and Eunhyuk solos are good but still their sound has this a little bit of "dated and samey" vibe here and there. The person who's directing taemin's comeback should lend a hand to D&E. Look at TVXQ Changmin's Devil (which I believe to be made for Taemin but he's in the military at that time), Changmin can rock the "newer" sound just fine with his top-of-the-line vocal and performance and OWN the song 110%.
