Pee Wee Herman’s father was one of the first US pilots to fly the German fighters in Israel. The story I heard was the first flight after The German fighter was reassembled in Israel was a combat mission against a tank Attack at the start of the war. No test flights, Straight into combat!

Didn't know it was PeeWee Herman's father. If I remember correctly this was the first or second day of the War of Independence and there was a huge Egyptian tank column about 15 miles south of Tel Aviv. The entire Israeli Air Force fighter component was just 4 Me-109s (actually the inferior Czech version with tractor engines and bomber propellers). They attacked the tank column. I think just one bomb was dropped and they also strafed it and they had malfunctions. One of the Israeli fighters was shot down and I think one crashed on landing. Thankfully in the months to come they were successful in filliing in their need of fighters, bombers and transports.

I realize the B24 had better range and bomb load, as did the Lancaster, but the B17 was renowned for reliability, durability and ease of handling. It was sweet looking, too. If it looks right, it is right. Boeing overbuilt everything on this bird, brought a lot of guys back because of it.

Good point. Strategically the Lancaster was a far superior aircraft, it was a lot cheaper than the B17 per unit and although it had a lot lower payload, the B17 had better defensive armament. The B17 was more survivable if needing to bail out as well. The Lancaster and the B17 were both very reliable though. I love the sound of the Lanc along with B17 and they’re both beautiful to view.

@@adamlee3772 Actually, the Lancaster had one other issue, besides having shorter range (both US Heavy Bombers were designed as patrol aircraft to intercept an attacking fleet approaching the US), and that was the altitude it flew at. With most bomb loads it flew about 5,000 feet (~1,524 meters) lower than the US bomber formations (the top units were more than 15,000 feet (~4,572 meters) higher than the Lancasters!). This placed it well within the Range Envelope of the 88mm Anti-Aircraft guns!!! (The B-17's & B-24's were barely in this envelope and therefor had a much shorter time that the 88's could shoot at them!

I do know there's a Canadian connection with one of Israels B17s. I joined the Canadian naval air arm in 1950. I was 17 years old. We had a naval air base on the Dartmouth side of Halifax harbour about 10 miles or so east. It was called HMCS Shearwater and I believe it was inherited from the Canadian Air Force coastal command in 1946. Now I'm not certain if this B-17 was a part of the group mentioned in this video. Only that it was trying to make it's way to Israel by flying up the east coast of the US and Canada and across the North Atlantic via Greenland/Iceland/Scotland etc. The story I got from first hand personnel was that the aircraft lost an engine or two, declared an emergency and came into our base in the middle of the night. I can't remember if this was 1948 or 1949 because it was so long ago. But I got the story from actual personnel who worked on the aircraft for the next few days. I have no idea what went on behind the scenes with the upper echelon of our base, nor do I know what sort of communications went on between the base commander and the Dept. of Defense in Ottawa. All I know is what was told to me by mechanics and air frame personnel who worked on the aircraft to get it airborne. I was told the aircraft was loaded to the gills with small arms, small arm ammunition, mortars, hand grenades etc. All personnel involved in the incident were sworn to secrecy and the aircraft was rolled into one of our maintenance hangars for repair. Apparently it was known that this was an illegal flight and the situation was kept under wraps. Our guys worked on this aircraft for the next few days until it was airworthy and able to continue its flight toward Israel. It flew out in the middle of the night and was never seen again. In addition, we had two fighter pilots, who will remain nameless, who flew the Messerschmidt 109 for Israel in 1948/49 as well. When I watched this video it reminded me of this story, so I thought I would share it. Many countries were supportive of Israel and turned a blind eye toward a lot of the shenanigans going on behind the scenes. Probably through guilt, because many of them, including Canada, refused to take in Jewish refugees fleeing Germany in 1937/38.

In this dim dinky library, there were several hand written - photostat, as well as printed published books. I do recall reading on some Canadian pilots playing a very active part in the establishment of the IAF, pilot training programs, tactics and such.

It bears remembering and correcting you that the Muslim people living in what was called "Palestine", were not displaced when Israel was declared to be a partitioned sovereign nation by the United Nations. The UN intended that Israel would be shared among the Jews and Muslims. The incoming government of Israel begged the Muslims to stay and to work together with the Israeli Jews to share and to help make the new nation a success, and that both Jewish and Muslim religious and cultural rights would be respected. However, the Grand Mufti of that area and the Arab League refused to recognize the UN partition which created Israel, declared the new State of Israel to be against the will of Allah, and ordered every Muslim to destroy it in its cradle. Some tried and some did not, but no peaceful Muslim was displaced from Israel or ordered to leave. Those who left did so voluntarily and became the Palestinians. This was all entirely driven by their religious hatred and bigotry. Those who left exiled themselves.

Did the millions of neighboring Muslims help them and give them a place to live? As good and practical a solution as this would be for everyone, the Arabs will not permit this as it removes a major thorn in Israel's side. Unlike the Arabs, who deliberately and cowardly targeted unarmed children in many outlying Kibbutzim, the Israeli forces only attacked those who were fighting them and who represented a threat to Israel. Unfortunately, civilians are often killed and injured in a war. Haven't you heard? First of all, the entire adult population of Deir Yassin was not killed or even injured. Only those Arabs who fired at the Israeli forces were fired upon and, yes, some of them were killed. The Israeli soldiers knew what they were there for and did not target unarmed civilians. Why would they take the time and energy to do that when it was unnecessary, had no strategic object, was inhumane, and would create terrible publicity for Israel in a war in which the rest of the world's opinion and support was so important? Secondly, your willingness to ignorantly repeat that lie which was created as Arab propaganda indicates that truth means little to you. No, the Arabs did not get to push all of the Jewish men, women and children into the sea. Such a shame, right? Notwithstanding the Arab fable that you repeat, in war, every side commits acts that in retrospect are seen as heinous, and every side accuses the other side of atrocities, tending to greatly exaggerate how horribly the other side has behaved. This is the nature of war, always has been, and always will be. Did the Arab nations combine to destroy Israel immediately after the United Nations voted to for its right to be a nation? Yes. Did Israel have to fight a defensive War of Independence to prevent being destroyed by the Arab nations? Yes. Was the Israeli forces' attack on Deir Yassin a battle in Israel's' War of Independence? Yes. Did the Israeli's deem it necessary to do so in the defense of Israel? Yes. Was it a battle in a war against Israel that the Arabs stared in order to destroy Israel? Yes. Am Israel chai indeed! In the mid 70's my parents were returning to the USofA from their residence in Jerusalem as required for non-Jewish residents each year. They took a detour through Rome to take in the sights and found themselves at the "Judea Capta" triumphal Arch of Titus. On it there was a little sticky note in Hebrew which read "Am Israel chai". 2000 years and ancient Rome is no more. Yet the people of Israel are still here! God does not break His promises...

Both the B-17 and the B-24 had their advantages and disadvantages! A lot of crews, especially the pilots and co-pilots hated the B-24 due to a stability problem which made their legs "feel like a gorilla beat on them" due to constantly having to do rudder corrections. This also made their formations a bit "looser"! Despite the B-17 being "an airplane design generation"older, crews like it for its inherent stability and also its ability to take damage (more damage than the B-24!) and still get the crew home... Now, yes the B-24 had longer range, and often could carry a bigger bomb load to the same target... as I noted above, it has an advantage of being a newer generation, kinda comparing a F-80's dogfighting capability to a F-86! (Or a P-40 to a P-51, F-4 Phantom to a F-15 Eagle, etc. >added in edit

Thanks for this video, did not know the story behind the Israeli B17's prior to this. However, one minor correction - The Arabs were not displaced upon the creation of the state of Israel. The founding charter stated that all would be equal as Israeli citizens irrespective of race or religion if they were already resident. The large scale exodus of Arabs was called for by the 5 invading Arab armies who wanted them to get out of the way so they could engage the Israelis and they were told they could go back to their homes once victory was complete. It didn't quite work out that way. In his memoirs, Syrian President Haled al Azm stated, "Since 1948 we have been demanding the return of the refugees to their homes. But we ourselves are the ones who encouraged them to leave. Only a few months separated our calls for them to leave and our appeal to the United Nations to resolve on their return" Meanwhile, the Jordanian Army had taken Judea and Samaria (Which they renamed 'The West Bank') and East Jerusalem, where they remained after the 1949 ceasefire until the Israelis took those territories back in the 1967 six day war. They carried out ethnic cleansing of those areas with Jews having to either evacuate to Israel or face execution.

In one of the grandest underestimations of the 20th century, when the UN voted for partition in 1948, the expectation was that the surrounding Arab countries would annihilate the Jews in short order. The UN and the Western nations did everything they could to ensure that the Israelis were under armed and under supplied. What they did not foresee was the Israeli talent for improvisation. What most people do not quite understand is that the issues between Israel and the surrounding Arab countries is entirely a European creation. It was the Romans who drove the Jews from their homeland, it was the Europeans as a whole who created social and economic conditions for the Jews that only a race of geniuses could have survived, it was the Germans who attempted to exterminate them and it was the British and the French who both thwarted the nationalistic aspirations of the Arabs and who simultaneously betrayed the Israeli Jews during the 1948 war. Europe deserved every consequence it ever got out of all of that.

Usaf and royal air Force had abounded b24 bomber aircraft in chakeri air field in kanpur uttar pradesh in 1945-46. After independence indian air force needed these aircraft but problem was they were badly damaged by royal air Force. More than 450 aircraft were grounded. In 1949-50 indian air force was searching bomber aircraft and these abounded aircraft were chosen to raise squadran. It was HAL who selected 48 aircraft and refurbished these aircraft with scavenging parts from other aircraft. Two squadron raised in indian air force. My father was in that squadron. It is was very interesting true story. After retirement 4 aircraft were kept as show piece. One in indian air force, one for USA Canada and Britain. You must make a video on these issue. 😊😊

@@josephtein3835 Alright I’ll answer your question. The answer is no. Someone has to be realistic though and say that yeah this stuff happens. It’s not fun to talk about and I don’t have to agree with it but that doesn’t ignore the fact that people do bad things. Every single side of every single conflict has done something they shouldn’t have at one point or another. As for your second comment, what I said still stands. People do bad things. This isn’t new. It’s terrible that it happened and that it continues to happen but it always will. I really don’t know what else you want to hear

True, the Lancaster and B-24 could carry bigger bomb loads. But the B-17 was an older design. 4 years older than the B-24, and 7 years older than the Lancaster. And, the Lancaster was based on a twin-engine design that sucked, the Manchester. The Lanc had a smaller crew, no belly protection and they flew primarily at night.
