A day-trip to the Isle of Eigg inc the CalMac ferry from Mallaig: my first steps on the Small Isles!

This part of Scotland is up there with my absolute favourites - the number of times I've stood on the beautiful beaches around Morar and gazed over at the stunning geography of the Small Isles and yearned to get there! Well here we go at last - it's one of my epic day-trips again, so I am limited to one island only. The one I wanted most - Eigg!
Join me on this 21 hour trip to see if I can get to the very top of the island - the magnificent peak of An Sgùrr.
Filmed on Monday 28th March 2022. Ferry price as a foot passenger £8.70 return (please note you must book a place in advance, even as a foot pax!)
Mallaig - Eigg: Departure 10.20, Arrival 11.40
Eigg - Mallaig: Departure 16.40, Arrival 18.10

Thanks Steve for satisfying a childhood curiosity. I remember as a child looking at a large map of Scotland on the classroom wall and seeing these 4 small islands with curious names and wondering what they were like. Always aware of them I've never given them much thought in the past almost 60 years. The isle of Eigg is certainly larger than I thought , thanks for taking me there. Wonderful video, I look forward to see what other places I'd almost forgotten existed.

I spent several days on Eigg 45 years ago with my father when the island was owned by Keith Schellenberg. He initially invested a lot of money in the island and seemed to be quite popular, but later fell out with the locals and I heard someone tried to burn his house down. But. I believe he started or at least resurrected the Small Isles Highland Games and we had a fantastic day with all the events held in that large grassy area you walked over. I remember the caber was so heavy that nobody could even lift it let alone toss it, so they had to keep sawing bits off till at last someone managed it. That was a magical time. Thanks for bringing back so many wonderful memories on this and your other trips in the Highlands and West Coast.

Mallaig looks a grand port, with beautiful scenery all around, and of course they have the steam trains running to there at times. Sgurr is like a monument to geology. Thanks for posting. You got me away from writing reports here in Dorset for a brief lunch break. I've been on Eigg several times but never got chance to explore much on land as I was there for the diving, which was stunning. the Small Isles have clear waters, plenty of lee shelter and huge diversity of marine life. There is a wall not far from the harbour entrance on Eigg that drops down to nearly 30m and has all sorts living on it. There is a steep shell gravel slope at the bottom with free-living cup corals (Caryophyllia smithii) living in it. This species is usually attached to rock, so would be well worth seeing (anorakly speaking) for any diver.

Last bit was 'of its time', maybe but you don't have to be Action Man (also 'of its time') or brave. I am so envious of your walk to the top of the Sgurr! Hubby and I took a boat trip to the Small Isles quite a few years ago. It only stopped at Eigg for about half an hour, but that I took a photo of that magnificent rock, which has been on our wall ever since. We were allowed to spend longer on Muck which I can highly recommend. Interesting little crafty shops selling things made by the islanders, a lovely coffee shop, lots of cows and a great view across to Rum. And very very peaceful. Thanks for showing us Eigg, Steve!

Great day out that but what a long day. A couple of days needed on that magnificent island. Weather has been great all over northern Europe so great to see you making the most of it. Incredibly photogenic one this one. Misty on the water, sunny in the uplands and a sunset in a broken clouded sky to die for. Scotland eh. Footnote, love hearing those Scottish accent on the Ferries, that's what you long for when your away.😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I got married on this beautiful Island 17th September 2003. Stayed in Sandavore Bothy when it had gas mantles for light. It has been modernised now but our stay was magical back then. We were married in the kitchen of the registrar at Kildonnan x Beautiful place and wonderful memories x

Many years ago CalMac used to do what they Island Hopscotch. You chose which one to do from a variety. My then wife and I did one starting from Ullapool finally ending up on Skye via Outer Hebrides etc all done on my motorcycle. Amazing sunsets, vistas, as Scotland can give you, plus on Skye being eaten alive by the dreaded beastie midge !! Never been to Eigg, great trip, maybe a wee bit long for just a day !! Cheer, Steve 👌👍

We used to have our holiday's with the kids for many years at Arisaig, (invercamb camp site) which is a few miles from Mallaig, we would drive there for a day trip and for me fishing off the pier for cod. We used to walk up to the white hotel at half 11 at night just to watch the sun set - and a few beers! Each evening we would take our ice bloc's to the hotel for them to freeze them for us, then each morning I would drive up and collect them and buy fresh eggs and milk which was sold in whisky bottles! The clegs there were furiousness! We stayed in a rented caravan.

It's easy to climb as long as you don't tackle it from the front.Much easier around the back. The front would be a technical roped type climb and dangerous.Bit like the Salisbury Crag's in Edinburgh try them from the city centre facing side and there's a good chance of dying but around the back an easy walk!
