Video Highlights:
- Deeply valuing the intimate relationship with the ecosystem on his farm, Geoff finds joy in witnessing the dawn each day and fully embracing the rhythms of farm life.
- His journey into permaculture began with a pivotal moment in 1983 when he completed Bill Mollison's Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) course, an experience that profoundly altered his perspective on life, agriculture and sustainability.
- Describing permaculture as more than just a science, Geoff emphasizes its role as an ethical design focused on repairing the Earth. He advocates for using local biodiversity and appropriate technology to create sustainable systems.
- Permaculture spreads through a decentralized teaching model, empowering individuals worldwide to become educators and advocates. This approach ensures the continuous growth and evolution of the permaculture movement.
- Integrating his passion for activities such as horse riding and surfing into his permaculture lifestyle, Geoff finds parallels between understanding natural patterns and managing sustainable agricultural practices.
- Aiming for permaculture principles to be adopted as international policy, he emphasizes the importance of training more individuals in permaculture design and leveraging advanced technologies like LiDAR.
- Advocating for the cultivation of local food due to its efficiency and health benefits, Geoff believes that locally grown produce, rich in nutrients and supporting ecological balance, is essential for sustainable living.
- For Geoff, permaculture represents more than just a profession; it is a pathway to personal fulfillment. He sees it as a means to actively contribute to solving global challenges and creating a positive impact on the environment.

Thank you Geoff . The online PDC I took with you in 2019 was life changing!! I threw in my job and now do what I love - growing my own food, increasing biodiversity on my small farm and improving the local ecosystem. During your PDC you encouraged us to share what we are doing to encourage and inspire others so I took that on board and share my journey through KZread. It brings me as much joy, through communicating with others, as the actual growing does. I would not be here doing all of this without you - thank you so much Linda !!

Awesome Geoff! So true! Paradigm shifting! 8:30 I love body surfing in the ocean! And I equate birthing with surfing too… if you are relaxed and centered, you keep your balance and there is a joy and thrill of riding the wave. If you get distracted or are upset for any reason, your balance is off and you tumble under the wave.

You are right permaculture gets into you and you see the landscape differently. I totally agree that eating in season is the best and healthiest. The burgers with pale tomatoes on them no taste, leave me empty of real goodness. Why add them? We have lost the connection to the earth. In season food is the only way for me. Thanks.

Hey Geoff, I have enjoyed your KZread videos for several years now. They are one of many inspirations for my permaculture yard in Canada. You said something that really got to me. When you spoke of teaching people to read the LIDAR maps and making permaculture land management plans (or something like that). You said that hundreds of thousands of people need to know how to do this. If it was possible for AI to do this, do you think that would be a good route to speed this up?

@@geofflawton3198 Of course, silly me. There are limitations to LIDAR. LIDAR can't tell us the exact plants that are growing in said area, soil conditions etc. One day we will get there will fully automated permaculture. Drones and other robots will gather data (with LIDAR too) about an area and then implement a permaculture design. But you are right though. We need a lot of people trained in PDC to implement local permaculture projects right now. We can't wait. Also said people will eventually train AI. The more people, the better for this too. I want to bring up one barrier to your vision. It is great to have all of these people trained, but access to land ins't always easy.

😂😂😂 You're a rare breed indeed Geoff. VERY FEW farmers relish the pre dawn or dawn starts as the case may be. Dad always loved the opportunity to dry the cows off over winter because he hated those miserable cold wet winter starts, getting the cows into the milking shed. Can't say I blame him. I remember being gotten out of bed as a 7yr old to go help feed out hay on many a cold wet winter's 0200ish morning so that we didn't have a dead herd come morning. Wasn't long before my 5yr old sister and I firmly decided that (we) weren't going to be farmers nor marry one either - much to Dad's disappointment I think. Though I did start learning to drive the Land Rover as an 8yr old until Dad decided I was "old enough, fat enough, & ugly enough" to get out & feed out the hay myself as (he) got ot sit in the dry and drive! 😂😂

You've got beautiful cows, chickens, dog, ponies, horses, farm. It's wonderful. I think permaculture should be worldwide, but mandating it would bring in government corruption/ incompetence. We need to teach people how permaculture benefits them with better health, nutrition, less medicines, less cost, more resiliency, more localization, happier livestock, better wildlife preservation, etc so that they buy THIS, use THIS, live THIS instead of buying into the cultural/economic serfdom being offered by the mega corporate conglomerates/government.

@@TheWeedyGarden I think giving the bigger picture is helpful. I am for free market, but what we have is crony capitalism/oligarchy. Think it's important for politicians as well as consumers be aware that what is being promoted isn't "just a lefty thing." This is about better products with huge, other important benefits such as better hydrological cycles, better soil for growing plants and fattening/feeding livestock, happier livestock, more food, build other resources, on and on without being labeled "climate alarmists," or patsies for corporate malfeasance. If we raise others' awareness, they will more likely follow thru, as well as pass on the word. I do think one can push for more general use rail, because they have multiple benefits, as well as methane harvesting and it fits in the box of satisfying those interested in nutrition, versus those interested in environmental issues, versus those saying "let's not rush into every new thing"...

I go from very passionate to very discouraged. It does not change when you own land. I have a small piece of land (with a bond) but very often you get set backs and then you loose hope. Then you harvest a pumpkin or get a lamb and you are back in the game. Keep fighting the good fight. Debt free is already much further then most people are! 🎉
