A Day In The Life Of An Astronomer

Ғылым және технология

Many people think that professional astronomers spend their days gazing up at the night sky through a telescope. But this is far from reality. In this video, I'll show you what a professional astronomer does at work in a typical day and explain why it's much more interesting than simply staring through a telescope.

I’ve wanted to be an astronomer since I was a kid. I’ve dropped out of college twice because i was doing majors that I felt pressured to do. I was always told that astronomy isn’t a real job. But it’s my passion. Today, I’m going to enroll in school and start my journey of pursuing my dream career. I suck at math. But I’m willing to learn. Wish me luck.

Very interesting indeed. However, at the end you said "I can't think of anything more boring" when talking about looking through a telescope with your own eyes. I disagree. To me there is a star difference between looking at the brilliant images from the Hubble and other observatories on a computer, and the somewhat relaxing nature of going outside in a really dark piece of land and observing the sky with your own eyes the old fashioned way. The difference can be seen when you show non Astronomers, let's say Saturn, through a telescope and an image from Cassini. I think (as it does me) it helps them grasp what they're seeing and get a better understanding of the solar system we live in. Same for galaxies and star clusters. I could go on but I think I made my point.

I feel it depends on the type of person. I know many engineers, and one of the issues they came to terms with is you rarely physically see the achievement of your work. For some chemicals, it was how much efficiency they achieved. For some mechanicals, it was how much safer a process now is. Everything on the surface looks the same, but the conceptual is what changed in a drastic way. Many astronomers are probably at a point of not caring what the millionth galaxy looks like. They want to know the dynamics of it, and that takes many calculations. Unchartered data may be exposed, which could explain other theories. That is what they are striving for. I'm guessing aerospace photographers are the ones looking through the telescope many nights, as that is what they strive for. It's amazing how many go to college with a misunderstanding of what many professions actually do.

Now I am almost 14 and I am trying to take baby steps in studying physics more deeply outside of what I study at school. I love maths and physics and I want to work on it. I love what I study at school so I like to research further on stuff. I absolutely love physics. It fascinates me…I hope I will become an astrophysicist or astronomer some day. An astronomer should know astronomy, physics, mathematics, statistics and computer programming, so lots of work. However, it has an amazing feeling when you see the results of these efforts and understand how the universe works.
