** Why does Alex honk? **
When I got Alex as a baby, he would bob his head and squeak. I would bob my head and squeak back at him and say “hello Alex!” Eventually, he started to mimic me mimicking him, and over time it just got more and more exaggerated until it became the honk you see today.
** What is he saying before the honk? **
Technically, he’s saying “hello Alex.” But it’s also a bit of “hello Dommi” for his son Dominic, and a bunch of other names of other birds I’ve owned. Because Alex has spent most of his life with lots of other birds, they would tend to teach each other to talk rather than listen to me, so he’s never been very good at speaking clearly.
** Is Alex Lonely? **
I often get comments from people who feel sorry for Alex because they think he only has plush toys for company. He actually lives with another real bird, Dominic, who is also his son! I used to have a whole aviary of cockatiels but had to say goodbye to most of them when I moved into an apartment. Dominic had been living with a friend for a while but came back to keep his dad company when Alex’s mate, Tina, sadly passed away in 2016.
** Thinking of getting your own cockatiel? **
I know Alex is cute and we all love to see him honk, but keep in mind that parrots are a big responsibility and require special care. Alex himself is almost 20 years old. That’s a lot of time, money, noise and poop! It’s important to do your research and think very carefully about whether a pet bird is right for you, and whether it’s right for the bird!

I loved the toy bell greeting. My oldest Precious has a bell that he's had for the majority of his 30 year life. He likes to wear it and also roll it along the back of his neck. No matter whatever new toy he gets his bell is his favorite. I think because his eyesight is so bad having cataracts that it's maybe a source of comfort for him.

My cockatiel loved his bell above all other toys. Anywhere that bell went was home to him. Not having the bell would make him mopey and sad. He had it almost his whole life (23 years).

Spicy Citrus Precious is a male Lutino cockatiel. He actually belonged to my folks for 8 years and due to unforseen circumstances they asked me to take him. We always joked that he would outlive them and sure enough both of them passed within the last 10 months. He's slowly declining so the main goal is to keep him happy and comfortable. He's always had the personality of a grumpy old man since day one and that has never changed. Things have to be his way and he let's you know when he's upset. Even though he's not affectionate like all the other birds I've ever had he's still special and I will miss him when he finally passes.

🐤🐥🐦Aww that's so cute! 30 years wow that's crazy! My birds loved to play with their bells too! I had 2 parakeets named Sparkle and Rocky and 1 conure named Kiwi. But they all passed away. It's very sad losing pets☹. But my aunt has a cockatiel and his name is Kiki and he's always playing with his bell🔔. So adorable!!!😊😋😃😍

It's so interesting how their songs and noises are different. One of my parent's cockatiels just passed away unfortunately, but he would say, "hey baby" and "give me kiss".
That's why i looooove animals. They have a pure and loving heart. No human would do that.
