In today's video, I'm heading into the office before heading home to spend time with my family and shoot a KZread video.

    Public transportation is the best for the reasons you showed- you can read or blog or watch videos while someone else drives. I'll trade the privacy of a car for the ability to use that time freely any day.

    I totally agree. The one caveat is that commuting during rush hour on the trains can be a nightmare of jam packed trains and all kinds of delays. So I avoid all of that and have a more peaceful commute by heading in early.--Tasha

    Abroad on a Budget Hmm there are pros and cons. Buses are late, the DC metro is single tracking sometimes and therefore making me late, the yellow line was closed this weekend. Carrying groceries is a lot harder if you have to carry them in a bus or metro and the. walk home carrying them from the bus/metro stop to your home. I like the metro and I don’t really like driving, but I wish I har a car too. In the US public transportation is not the best. Like if I want to take a train from Washington DC to say Charlottesville, Virginia I can’t because there isn’t one. Also while you can drive straight to where you’re going by car there might not be a bus going straight there and you might have to take 2-3 buses for just 5 miles. It happened to me. There are pros too ofc. No car payment, reading in the metro, not worrying about parking, but please know there are also so many cons.

    I was born and raised in Texas, which essentially has no public transport outside of the DFW Metroplex, so I absolutely appreciate how unrealistic it is to go without a car in most places in the U.S. However, I would still rather deal with delays/late busses/trains when "idling" is just me standing and waiting, instead of being trapped in stop and go traffic for 2+ hours thanks to an accident, or rush hour. I agree that there are pros and cons to both situations, but it depends on what hassle is a more acceptable hassle for you. From experiencing both sides of it- growing up in a very small town in Texas, living in Dallas, dealing with Austin traffic 0_ö - and then living overseas with excellent public transportation in both Japan and Sweden, I find that I prefer the inevitable inconveniences of public transportation over the inevitable inconveniences of owning a car. Both have their potential negatives (like everything) but when I consider what my time is worth, where I want to spend my money, and how I want to be able to be efficient (hard to read in that stop and go traffic) it's definitely worth my having to carry groceries on my lap or deal with delays and hanging out longer than expected at bus stops. :)

    I think it just depends. I have the ability to commute by train and I did so for several years but like Tasha said crowded commute trains lack of parking, concerns for safety including people getting robbed for electronic devices had me buy a Prius and get back in the car. It has proved to be fast driving now a days because the trains are never on schedule. I do like the idea of taking public transportation so I hope it will line up with my life at some later time.

  • @AbroadonaBudget

    @AbroadonaBudget

    It's interesting to think about the safety argument that way- I take a slightly larger view on that. Driving a car is much, much more dangerous than taking public transportation. I agree with you, though, that it all depends on what you are comfortable with. I would rather risk someone stealing my electronics than getting in a car accident, and I would rather be on a crowded train than in stop and go traffic. Like everything, the best choice for one person is not the best choice for another. I think the main thing is, I wish more Americans especially had the option to explore their "it depends" and make a choice- for many (if not most), the choice is made for them. You have to have a car in the majority of American towns and cities to go about your daily life in comfort, safety, and timeliness.

    You have this morning routine down!! I've never lived in a city with reliable public transport and I'm a bit jealous. I hate driving (It's especially stressful during the morning commute). I would love to sit back, relax, and read a good book on a train ride. Or get some work done--I'm all about productivity;) Anyways, I'm so inspired by this, and I'm hoping to try a similar morning routine this summer during my internship. Thanks Tasha! I am very interested in getting a chromebook now but I have one question about how you use it on the train, and that is do you have internet access on the train you are on?

    There is not internet access on the train. We use our phones as a hotspot. The Chromebooks can still run things without internet and have much more storage than when they first came out. - Joseph

    What time do you go to work? It’s still dark, I’m in South Africa, our sun rises at 04:00-04:30 in summer and 5:00-6:00 in winter, it’s so cook and weird at the same time to see someone going to work in the dark...and the rides, that’s way too many rides...this is why I want to go live overseas for a while...just for the experience of different things especially driving on the left, that always fascinated me, I mean how does one do that, especially being right handed 😂😂😂, I want to try it!!!

    I feel like this left out half the story: day in the life of a working mom. Where was the mom part (apart from meeting your kids at home)? My biggest challenge is juggling the need to carry out my professional tasks and my mummy tasks. Showing kids being part of the morning routine (getting ready, getting them to school) and afternoon school pick-up etc. would have been the most helpful part. Cos if you’re a mummy who doesn’t have to worry about that, your routine is not gonna look any different from just a single person’s routine, which is waaaaay more simple but doesn’t really do justice to the title of the vid. And won’t help us working mummies who do have to deal with the kids too.

    Why do you drive to the train? Why do you use public transportation if you have a car? I understand that you get stuff done on the train, but isn't the compute hours faster if you drive yourself, plus you don't have to wait, and walk between stops? It takes me 20 minutes to drive and 2 hours to take the bus.
