There are excellent courses on TeamTreeHouse.com as well as Cybrary. If you commit to learning a few hours a day you'll be an engineer in no time. I am homeless and study 3-4 hours a day. It took me 28 days to grasp the Python language and now I am working on Django. Hopefully will be employable after that! Django uses Python, too. There is also Flask. Python is the way to go since it's a very general purpose programming language that is used all over for a massive variety of projects - machine learning, robotics, data analysis with TensorFlow, games and more!

I felt out out of place in my class because I was the only black student and it felt like I wanted to achieve something that wasn't meant for someone like me. Till I asked myself what's the point of associating my dreams with the colour of my skin because at the end of the day, the results of my work aren't determined by the colour of my skin, but by the quality of work and the effort I put in. Watching this video shows just how happy I could be if I just focus and follow my dreams. I really needed this, you changed someones mindset within a few minutes!

For all software engineers, make sure that you stay mentally and physically fit. For example, Take walks while coding. Walking helps your brain think more clearly. I have written my finest code from the ideas that simply came from coding. Second, be careful of eye strain, and carpal tunnel. Ask a physical Therapist to suggest exercises for both. As for me, 30 years and going without glasses. My wrist hurts because my fingers cant keep up with my brain, so i have several rubber bands that are aligned. I slip over my fingers and then fan out and in. Love to see more Software Engineers because our industry needs you with your creativeness, and ingenuity. Just make sure you show respect to the older engineer, where both can work together and write some kick butte software

Great points! I want to expand the last part you said - the respect for older engineers. I feel that we should respect everyone. The thing about older engineers is they might have a wealth of past experiences that gives them a set of values of what constitutes a good design/architecture/solution. Question them on 'why', dont just dismiss it out of hand OR just take it as fact. "it's elegant" is not a good answer. "it's elegant because it's simpler (demonstrably), more testable, and more maintainable" is one that you should listen to

@CJ Spencer the average shows that it is $89,000 a year. I did not go to college and straight out of high school earned 60k first year at a solar company no experience trained on the job. This year after doing the math I know by the end of 2019 I will be making over 70k and its only my second year here. Now keep in mind I have no debt. I love technology but find it crazy straight out of high school I can earn such a salary with no education and no experience. I literally found this job on craigslist in richmond VA. Majority of people that work here are young like me no older than 20 and we are all making this pay. I did not have to spend 4 years at college no hate though. I love cyber security and programming its just I will end up with the same pay and no debt.

  • @brandonbarnes8997

@CJ Spencer I do not doubt potential earnings but what is clear is that statistics do not lie and if it is saying the average is $89,000 than that means majority of programmers working are earning around that salary and considering all the lines of code written the books read the logic the debt I can earn the average with zero education is amazing it's not some minimum wage fries In a cup job but it's not comparable to programming

I think the number one thing someone doesn't talk about is everything you do before you start coding for a project. Dicussing design, order servers, DBs, getting access to products that your team doesn't own, reviewing the product with IT, how to scale the product, etc. That really is about the majority of what people do as a software engineer. If all they do is code, then all they are is a programmer. Great video. I can relate

Just curious on the difference between the two as I was told the degree in Software Engineering is with engineering courses, but computer science is without those. Both have quite a considerable amount of programming though. In terms of the workplace, i believe some positions require either/or a software engineering or computer science degree. Thanks for replying.

I never went to any university and I'm a software "engineer" tho I prefer to just call myself a developer or simply a coder. The truth is you learn most of the things yourself at home. I started coding when I was 12. Good companies don't look at your degree but your skills and experience that obviously you can't gain at school without working on a real project. Regards.

Yeah that's definitely true, companies hire people based on experience and some also require an undergrad degree (that's why I'm pursuing a degree for those companies that are a potential hire) plus at university that im going to have mandatory coop for first hand experience which is really nice, though side projects are also a amazing idea in your free time.

At my university, there is no major dedicated to software engineering. There are courses to prepare those for software engineering, and those courses are within the computer science program at my school. I know this is similar to other university computer science programs in the United States. Computer science covers a large scope of theoretical computer-related topics to allow students to determine where in the ecosystem they best fit whether that be working as a data analyst, a software engineer, a game developer, a data recovery specialist, etc.
