A Day in the Life of a Ready Mix Driver

Ozinga is lucky to have talented, professional and hard-working individuals on our ready mix team. Our drivers work tirelessly to get the job done, and they take pride in what they do. After all, they were born to build.
Whether you're interested in learning more about our company or about what a ready mix driver job entails, take a look at our video featuring our very own Mick Jansey.

I drove a concrete mixer for 5 years, when I first started the company was called Carrier Concrete, the family sold out to US concrete then the company was named Titan Concrete, I drove Mack and International mixer trucks and I even drove a old Ford mixer truck., If I could get my health back I would get my CDL and go back to driving mixer trucks.

Have you guys ever noticed most mixer drivers look run down and some pissed off! That’s because being a mixer driver you work 6 days a week and have different start times’ you don’t know when you start work and you don’t know when you get off at my company we get a text with our start time! Sometimes during line up around 2 we will get washed out and told to come in at 11pm and work until 11am the next day it’s hard because not everybody can go to sleep when ever and get up and stay focused all night most mixer company’s that run you to death toss you in a death trap truck to toss you around in the cab most of the time that helps you stay awake though

Ready-mix is not at all good. It's a ton of work, low pay and hours of hard physical labor in a truck smaller than a local day cab. Lots of moving, stretching, lifting, climbing, getting cussed out by contractors. If you see this and are wanting to be local, keep looking. Haul fuel or become a yard driver. Btw, your more than a driver... Your a mechanic, laborer, customer relations, punching bag for contractors and a slave to the system. These jobs should easily pay 75-80k a year with all the BS and work that's involved.

I don't know where you heard that from or got your experience from but that's not the case at my company. Almost 25 and hour for driver and almost 27 for driver trainers. I done alot of hard physical labor construction jobs and driving a mixer definitely isn't one of them. As far as the 75-80k , that' is what were averaging annually down here in Phoenix Arizona.

In southeast Missouri, the job pays 14 bucks a hour and you average 40 hours a week. The contractors are allowed to chew you up and spit you out. You, the driver aren't allowed to so much as tell them off because you will be terminated for making the company look bad. Maybe it's just my part of the world but a mixer driver gets paid less than a pizza delivery driver or Walmart greeter. I'm currently stuck in my position but as soon as I can find a local trucking company that has nothing to do with cement, I'm out. It's literally the worst job in the trucking industry. I think I may even go otr if I can find a local home daily job just to get away from it. I'm glad some people like it, because we need concrete. I'm glad folks can handle the job. I'm just saying as a warning to maybe otr guys or local truckers, this isn't trucking. It's driving a long bobtail 10% of the time and the other 90% will be spent doing hard labour around the yard, at the customer location or other places.

@@harleyswinger9128 Yea it probably is the area where you live cause that doesn't sound anything like it over here on the west coast. And wow that is very low pay for mixer driver over there! I guess it just depends on where you live, the demand for concrete and working for the right company.

Japan could turn their barrels of nuclear waste into concrete and drown solid plastic sealed barrels down to crush depth. Molten lava that comes up on the sea bed floor might be radio active but turns to stone and isn't a problem killing and contaminating the ocean. They could fix it : )

You want to know how I handled them ? Told them to FXXK themselves ! Always in trouble with management owner actually but I was the union steward and best driver he had and he knew it ! Never got fired 30 years ! Retired now they still call me when there busy if the drivers stick together they don’t have to take shit from customers remember how are they going to replace 20 30 experienced driver’s? We were TEAMSTERS and we stuck together that’s how it’s done you have to show the company their nothing without drivers!!!!

Drive a front discharge and then come back and talk about your experiences. Or let talk about certain contractors that want to fight you when you show up on the job and treat you like crap and cuss you out. While you just sit there and smile. If you dont have thick skin and cant do 5 things at once and be a mind reader then this isnt the job for you!
