A Day in the Life of a Mechanical Engineering Student (Syracuse University)

Hey y’all!
After the majority of you voted on my poll for a day in the life of a mechanical engineering student, I finally got around to making it. I hope you’re all able to get a better understanding of the time it takes to fit everything into a day with such a demanding major. It is very possible to do this major and still enjoy your college experience, you just need to learn how to properly manage your time and maybe miss out on a few nights of sleep.
This was my first time “vlogging” so there’s a lot more for me to learn. If you liked this type of video then let me know down in the comments and maybe I can start to make some more :)
Also, I’m starting a new thing where in each video I will recommend a current song that I have on repeat at the time of uploading a video and would love for some name suggestions for what this song series should be called. (I.e. Replayed recommendation, this episodes “spin that song” etc)
🎵 Song of the video: Weight of the World - Jon Bellion 🎵
I really appreciate all the support, and just working to make each video better than the last!
Cheers!!!

Hey, I’m transferring to engineering (want to become mechanical) next year and am so conflicted on which laptop to get. I have apple products and have an mb air m1 at the moment but everyone says to get a 2 in 1 windows laptop. price range is anywhere below $1300. Whatever will last me long and has good battery/ performance tbh. keep up the vids!

Is double majoring in engineering and business realistic? For example, if someone was to double major in mechanical engineering and finance, would that be too much to handle?

  • @NathanLemoine

It honestly depends on how much you're willing to give up with other organizations/clubs and social life. Mechanical engineering continues to get harder each year and peaks junior year. I had a lab my junior year where I'd spend 70-80 hours on each lab report which each ended up being 100+ pages. That's just for one single class and I had 4 others each with homeworks quizzes and exams. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I already felt swamped with just engineering. You could probably fit in a business minor. It would be fewer classes needed and would still give you some time for yourself.

Before I can recommend one, it really depends what you plan on using it for. Do you currently have an iPhone or Android? What major/career are you going into? budget?

Hey congrats! And for your first two years as an undergrad you need to take a lot of pre-requisite classes which will mostly be held outside of Link Hall (the engineering building). Link Hall itself is definitely outdated and needs to be renovated which I think they have plans for in the upcoming years. There are 4-5 computer labs in this building with any type of software you will need to succeed in these majors. The professor's are very good though. You will have a mix of professor's that you like and dislike but I do believe they all care about their students doing well and are always willing to help if it is needed. ME and Aero are both very challenging majors and you need to be prepared to have a large workload and a lot of class time, but if that is where your passion lies then the program will teach you both problem solving and hard work which are life long traits. There are also plenty of jobs on campus, from the dining hall, to the gym facilities and library assistants. It shouldn't be too difficult to get one early on. I hear each of these jobs are very flexible with student's class schedule and shifts usually last between 1-4 hours so its not like you will need to work 30+ hours a week if you don't want too. Hope this helps a little and if you decide to go to Syracuse University and see me next year don't be scared to say hi! :)

I haven’t tried too many out, but for the past year I’ve been using the iCarez Anti-Glare Matte Screen Protector (2-Pack) which can be found on Amazon for right around $9. I haven’t had any problems with them, they make it feel more so like you’re writing on paper and you get two for the money. :)

Is it realistic for me to study and do homework 12-14 hours a day for 7 days a week? Reason why I am asking this question because someone told me that I have to spend this much time doing schoolwork if I want to succeed and graduate regardless of my major.

  • @NathanLemoine

    @NathanLemoine

    Жыл бұрын

As someone who is in a top 5 hardest major I can say this is NOT true. Even with mechanical / aerospace engineering, you do not have 12-14 hours of homework a day. It is possible to do all of your homework as long as you manage your time correctly and are willing to miss out on parties and going out with friends. It is very difficult but people do it every year so it is possible. I will say, specifically with my major, Junior year was incredible difficult and I honestly did put in 10 hours a day into studying, homework, and projects. I lived in the engineering building to do all the work I needed to do. Even other majors within STEM don't take up as much time as what mine did. I have friends who dropped mechanical engineering and went to civil or environmental and they would joke around with me about how they felt bad I stayed in my difficult major so theirs was a lot easier now. As for other majors outside of STEM (psychology, business, education, communications), most of them are jokes. Not to discredit the majors as there is still work that needs to be done (projects, presentations, papers) but I know so many people who could comfortable go out and party 4 times a week and still felt they barely had homework. Where as I would limit myself to 1, maybe 2 nights of relaxing or hanging out with friends. Keep in mind, this all depends on your goals. I strived to graduate on the Dean's List (essentially honors in high school) so I needed to put in extra work to get great grades. If you just want to pass with C's then you don't need to put in as much time. I hope my view on this helped clarify a little :)

  • @NathanLemoine

Hey, congrats on getting admitted!!! And it is exactly the same as undergrad. There's 3-4 bars right near campus everyone goes to which are fun (but get stale pretty fast). There are always house parties you can go to but they usually don't like random guys showing up, you'll probably have to pay some money to get in to them. Then there's always tailgates you can go to during the warmer months before football games which are fun! I'm personally over the party scene and I'm too busy with KZread now to get drunk each weekend haha

In this video is essentially my diet, I pretty much eat the exact same thing every day but sub out whatever carb/ vegetable the dining hall is serving that day. When I bulk in the winter Ill throw in a third piece of chicken and a little extra for a carb. I also have some oatmeal and a Greek yogurt at the end of the night to finish off my macros. For hard gainer’s I recommend drinking more whole milk as it’s a great way to get easy calories in. I highly highly recommend getting creatine pills as it’s the only supplement I’ve been taking the past 2 years and have noticed a huge difference in my muscle mass. Hope this helps! :)
