A Day in Savannah, Georgia | Vlog auf Deutsch

Endlich ein Vlog auf Deutsch! I decided to vlog a day in my life on a family vacation in Savannah, Georgia. I don’t think there are too many German travel vlogs here, so hopefully any German speakers will enjoy this new perspective :) We wanted to explore the city and see a few key sites like the Cathedral, Sorrel Weed House, Market Street, Leopold’s Icecream and more. There is so much to do in historic Savannah; I would definitely recommend visiting especially if you are looking for a southern feel.

My name is Montana Showalter, and I was a participant in the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange program in 2019-2020. I started my KZread channel while living in Germany and continue to make videos on German vs American culture. I love finding aspects of German culture in the US as well as producing videos in German as practice! In the future, I hope to live abroad again :)

Everytime you make a whole video in German I get so impressed, it's amazing how you could learn German this well in such a short time... if someone didn't know they'd think you've lived in Germany for YEARS!

There is a Large population of Germans that live 20 minutes from downtown Savannah. It is called Effingham County. You can see German history at New Ebenezer.

Not that they would indoctrinate you it's really just places that usually have the rooms available to meet in with that number of people without having to pay to rent them. I actually really liked the experience, the semi-annual camping trips were especially fun!

The most unique thing I found in Savannah was tupelo honey, a very special honey variety. The Spanish moss on the trees is most fascinating albeit, botanically speaking, it is not a moss, but rather a bromeliad (with flowers).

Hey Montana, thought I'd finally leave a comment on one of your videos. Keep up the good work. To answer your question: as far as I know, most boyscout organizations in Europe used to be, well, boys and I'm not sure if there ever was an exclusive girlscout organization. There's at least one I know of which technically would count as girlscouts: the BDM (Bund Deutscher Mädel) which was basically part of the WWII regime in Germany. Since then, many probably don't a make a difference anymore, I think, so they'd just be "scouts" now. ^^ At least when I was young, we were boys and girls at the German branch of an originally Scottish (or English) organization I was part of. Oh and I think the stuff hanging from the trees is actually not "Moos" (moss) but "Flechte" (plural with -n, English lichen), so biologically something very different. ;) (I think both are kind of their own category of plants but if I remember correctly, lichen has more of a parasitic relation to its host tree. If I'm not mistaken, lichen is not necessarily a good sign when it comes to tree health. But my memory could be wrong on that.)

First of all, Girl Scouts has nothing to do with BDM. The German organization is called Pfadfinder (boys) und Pfadfinderinnen (girls). They come both in clubs that are associated with churches, i.e. the Katholische Pfadfinder, but also politically and religiously independent Pfadfinder organizations exist, even though the oath to 'do God's will' does not quite gel with that. Different organizations have different ways of dealing with that, from just cutting it out of the oath to adjusting it to their beliefs. In Germany, there are 5 large high level organizations and hundreds of smaller ones, for both girls and boys, and the organizations are wide spread throughout the country. During the Nazizeit, the Hitlerjugend occupied the headquarters for the boycotts in Berlin, as the Nazis tried to channel everyone into the HJ organizations, Pfadfinder were a threat to their concept and values. Some organizations ceased to exist during those years, some others adjusted and somehow arranged to stay in existence, some were meeting in secret,, and there are a few scouting organizations that worked in the underground organizations that were opposed to Nazis. It was a bit of a mix. In East Germany, after the war, the Pfadfinder were again under threat, as the Communists did not like them either, but in the West they began to thrive after the war. Today, they are mostly seen as one form of the German Vereinsleben. The Spanish moss found in Savannah and other southern parts of the US, is technically not a moss, but an epiphyte, but in American English it is called 'Spanish Moss'. it is a plant that attaches itself to the bark of the tree, but it draws its nutrients from sunlight and the particles in the humid air and therefore needs to hang freely. It can also attach itself to lamp posts or other free standing structures that provide it a basis for its growth. It is not a parasite and does not damage the tree, at least if it does not get so heavy that it breaks some branches. That is why it has a symbiotic relationship with the oak tree, as that tree does not mind if some of the humidity gets soaked up by the epiphytes, but the oak has huge strong limbs and grows to be tall and strong, but it does allows some sunlight through, and has a long life, all qualities which many other tropical plants do not possess. It does create a uniquely southern atmosphere, helps to create a bit of shade in the heat, and looks lovely.

Wenn man gendern will, dann müßte man wohl Pfadfinder*innen schreiben. Great video!

Which one is your favorite US state? Except for Virginia of course. 😆😄
