A Dark Night For Bert

Фильм және анимация

A holiday special that's actually on time? What a shock! I've been working really hard to make sure this video is the best it can possibly be. Sadly, KZread has really compressed the quality of it due to it taking place mostly at night. KZread's video processing codecs don't really like dark colors and film grain, so I had to render this out a lot and make a lot of unlisted uploads to see if I could get it to look just right, thanks to the help of Stephen (SudrianRailwayModelor) & John Hayes (JHRawkes). Another HUGE thank you to Kool-Aiden for making the scrapyard building used in this! I'm so happy I'm finally able to film on one of my favorite sets from the entire show, speaking of MASSIVE thank yous to Jake Orba for making the set itself! It's such an atmospheric and wonderful route. Some more thank yous go out to Xavier for making our scrap engine and moving doors, and Jake Earnie for making the Iron Twins themselves, I'm so happy to have these guys in Trainz. Final thank yous go out to Andrew for the scrap grabber! It's perfect. It grabs. I really hope you all enjoy this regardless of whatever quality KZread decides to put it in, I also really hope KZread doesn't destroy the quality again because if I have to render this again I will go mental.

I always like this story, as it reminds me of a story where a Diesel (can't remember if it was "Revolutionary Era" Diesel or one of the Scrapyard Diesels) got put in their place by an Electric Engine who put it plainly by saying "Revolutionary? You're just as clapped out as these old kettles on wheels, electric's the way forward now.."

well, if you want the technical reason for why the boiler tubes would be snaking out like that, the most probable cause would be a boiler Steam explosion. in short, if the water in the boiler gets too low, the firebox can collapse or buckle, and then you've got superheated water rushing inside. goes off like a small bomb, blows the boiler tubes out the front, and well... it's a bad day for those in the cab, to say the least.

“There is one place, however, that the engines avoid.” ... And it’s the one place the series (after season 8) *refuses* to bring back! In all seriousness, this is the best ‘Arry & Bert story, keeping them how they were originally intended, but also evolved them to having more realized personalities! The waterphone music (used in numerous horror media) is especially creepy. Bert being the more complex one of the twins is rather fascinating considering he’s the silent type back in his debut. I also like the small role Derek has here. Very sympathetic to the old engine’s fate and isn’t a one trick pony (him constantly breaking down would get old fast, no wonder he’s only prominent in one episode in the show).

I have made a character named Ansel he is a Beattie Well Tank Engine who came to Sodor years before Thomas arrived. Ansel happened to be a close friend of Edward’s Ghost Engine and some other long missing locomotives who haunt other sites. Since He was long taken out of service and placed in a dark dark corner of the Smelters he was glad he still had his face but he was very rusty from all the years awaiting his end which might never come and will continue to suffer the utter misery of the Smelters.

I loved stories like this as a kid. The great thing about live action Thomas was that it occasionally made episodes like this which were dark but had some form of moral behind them which wasn't forced down your throat. Animated Thomas has made a disgusting mockery of the classic era and sadly modern day toddlers are being raised with this shit modern version that only teaches you about friendship and nothing else. Kids need shows that aren't afraid to tackle dark realities because it makes you more resilient as you get older. I loved feeling slightly unnerved by certain Thomas episodes when I was little and now I look back at the first 5 seasons with a great nostalgic fondness and i can really appreciate just how much thought and care went into the visuals and music of the show. Plus what toddlers need to be reminded of today is that these are machines first and foremost which is why I think your episodes and animation style would work so much better than the episodes that are being put out for tv now. Kids need to see what Thomas should look like and be reintroduced to some classic characters. Who cares if the parents say it's too grown up and scary because I'm pretty sure that toddlers with a genuine love for trains will be much more gripped by these episodes than the rubbish they are getting on tv.

@@jacobmassey3897 - I never had a problem with CGI Thomas. It *did* had a rough start during Nitrogen’s tenure, mainly because of the writing. I felt bad for the voice actors, both Michaels and the animators at the time. Then, we had a short lived renaissance during S17-21. But because *hardly* anyone outside of the older fans watch the show and other shows like Paw Patrol are more popular, Mattel decided to copy those shows with very little success. But, now the show is officially over after 24 seasons and unfortunately rebooted into another hollow children’s show that’s copying *everyone* else and *not* attempting to showcase its own identity. I’m not looking forward to it. I’m sticking with the Railway series, season 1-7, The Pack spinoff, *most* of S8-11, the 4 Nitrogen specials, the majority of the Brenner era and Michael White’s episodes.

What a wonderfully simple, yet powerful and immensely affective story. I ADORE ghost stories, but this one was on another level. Addressing Arry and Bert's macabre role they play in the end of many engines lives. Even after it ended, I had to take a few minutes to think about it and let it sink in. That's how much of a punch this had! Very well done! Filmed, directed, written beautifully! 👏🏻🎃👻😁

Dark Night for Bert really moved me in a deep way. Just from a few lines of dialog from their debut in S5, we see a side of Arry and Bert we never saw before, and develop their character! The lesson the little engine passed on to Bert in respecting older engines and the concept of death was very touching. So much so it covered the subject in a unique way and with it provides an important value everyone should learn. It’s everything a Thomas Halloween special should be. I think it's a masterpiece. Bravo to the entire team at Sodor Workshops for making this project a reality. Happy Halloween! 🎃

I have to admit, that twist at the end gave me chills. I've been watching your videos for a while now, and I love the atmosphere that you bring to BuriedTruck's scripts, on top of Jake's narration. It's quite interesting seeing the diesel characters confronted with the idea of one day being in the shoes of the engines they revel in sending for scrap. Also a nice way of showing how Bert may well just be following 'Arry's lead in their actions after all, a nice tidbit picked up from their debut story where he's just the silent muscle of the pair. Looking forward to seeing more content from you guys. Great job!

I feel what gives this video a few points over other adaptations is we’re not shown the front of the engine until they speak to Bert. I don’t think it was yanked. The boiler tubes snaking from the smokebox could be the result of a boiler explosion. The tubes snaking out of it, real result. Has happened. Even thinking about it, basically your own oversized metal veins stabbing through your head, through your face… and the line “I was so sure that they’d mend me”. *Not only can an engine basically have their face stabbed through from the inside, but they can survive it.* *Oh god.*

You can argue this is why Arie and Bert changed after season 5. Bert realizing that he could end up being scrapped just like he nearly did to Stepney really showed him a different perspective in life. You can be the best at what you do now but one day someone can easily take your spot if you aren't careful. They still messed with engines afterwards but not to that extent again.

First built all the way back in 1952, the Class 08, of which both 'Arry and Bert are members along with Diesel, still has over 100 members in regular revenue-earning service into the 21st Century, with a further 70 in preservation. There are Class 08 diesels that have outlived some of the last generation of steam engines!

You know. I'm a huge fan of fan made Thomas and Friends content here on KZread. Out of all of them I've seen and they're all spectacular in their unique ways....you're by far my favorite. The way you shed light on a part of the Island we knew so little about in the TV Series and managed to put an eerie spin on it is absolutely fantastic! You do an absolutely impeccable job and I love watching your content. I look forward to whatever you do next!

I used to know a little engine. I don’t remember the name, but it looked like the one in the scrapyard, the little dark blue one, think it was a narrow gauge engine on the Mid-Sodor... - My unnamed duplex OC

Woah! This is the BEST Smelter’s Shed I have EVER seen in these types of videos. Most of the smelter’s sheds in videos I see aren’t that accurate, or they’re like the ones in TATMR and CAE but this shed is so accurate with the red eerie lighting. The outside scrap yards are extremely accurate also! Such a chilling and amazing adaptation to this story!! Well done!!

Well, Carson, after watching this new video of yours, I have to say that it was pretty good and it was also cool to see Richard again even though it was in a non-speaking role, but it was still pretty good. All-in-all, in the end, I don't know what you have planned for any more videos you may do before this year's over, but I sure hope we see more of Richard again, so until then, keep up the good work and stay safe during these difficult times!
