A Daring Civil War Prison Escape

Фильм және анимация

In 1864, Sgt. Berry Benson escaped from two Civil War Prisons. The first escape from Pt. Lookout Prison resulted in recapture. In the second escape from Elmira Prison, the wily Confederate crawled through a tunnel and set off on an amazing adventure that saw Berry hiking, boating, and hopping rail cars for over 300 miles and three states before the resourceful southerner finally found his way back to Dixie and Lee's army.

My great great grandfather Peter Seaford from Davie County, NC was captured at Gettysburg and imprisoned at Cape Lookout where he attempted to escape but was recaptured. He died there from starvation and was buried in a mass grave. Northern prisons were every bit as bad as any in the south but that story is seldom told.

A very nice video presentation thanks. It almost has me admiring this man, until I remember that he was fighting for the continuance of human slavery.

War of northern aggression? I’m sorry but hadn’t the south taken federal weapons and property by force repeatedly before firing on fort Sumter?

Benson was the only one that walked through the door and escaped from Maryland. I guess the other prisoners were happy there... what happened to the other 9 soldiers that escaped from Elmira and why didn't more soldiers follow them

That's what I was wondering. A statue of one of my forebears, but on the Union side, was torn down and beheaded by anti-fa rioters.
