Actually, that's insanely hypocritical. I mean, a Dalek, blaming humanity for war, ambition, aggression, hate? At least, the Humans have compassion, mercy, and all manners of redeeming qualities. But what do the Daleks have? Nothing. They are just way worse than the worse humans.

Darlek Sec is pointing out that humans share a lot of Darlek nature (which is true). He doesnt blame us for war, just acknowledging how good we are at it.

Actually, that was his response. A Dalek fused with a human and latched on to all the dark, evil facets of humanity, and learned nothing. All Sec had effectively done was give himself legs. Same thing when 12 tried to make Rusty into a "good Dalek" and just gave him something else to hate even more.

RTD has always been ahead of his time with his writing. He's a very socially aware writer, and I get the feeling he wants to go further with ideas like this throughout his Doctor Who era but I doubt the BBC would let him, or perhaps he just didn't feel it appropriate for a family show. Either way, I'm looking forward to his return and seeing what he does differently this time now that society is more accepting of differing/minority views that can be quite critical of our society.

One moment that stands out to me is at the end of The Idiot's Lantern, where the disgraced, bigoted father is leaving home, but the Doctor and Rose convince the undertandably bitter son to embrace him instead of completely shutting him out of the family's lives. It would've been so easy to punish that character with a humiliating death, or just have him leave in total disgrace, but nope. There's a real beauty in forgiveness, and hope.

Maybe that's why the Doctor puts so much effort into protecting humanity. He sees what the Daleks became. He sees the same potential in us. He just doesn't want us to become the next Daleks.

i think something the show implied several times is that humans are actually more warlike and powerful than other species, not so much different to the Daleks or Sontarans. not just here, but with the Tocalafane and the way UNIT ends up defeating the Sontarans in battle (something that surprised even the doctor).

I like how Sec talks of pain in this scene. It isn't in anger, as you can tell when he is angry. He makes it clear when he is. No, it's more of a fascination, almost in a giddy way. He's experiencing things he's never had the chance to experience before, something his people lost long ago. It's at this point I think he starts enjoying the emotions he was given, and the fact he can enjoy anything at all.

I would thumb up but it's at 69 and I'm not ruining that, lol. On a more serious note, I agree. Pain, as much as people might hate it, is important. It's a teaching element, and also something you HAVE to feel. Without pain, suffering, anguish, you can't appreciate the good things. Love, pleasure, relief. Without a frame of reference, these ideas are lost and meaningless. It also opened the door to the concept of empathy for him. He's now felt pain...and knows what it feels like. Knows what it is like to be hurt like they hurt others. The moment he began to feel he stopped being a Dalek and began a path to something greater than he could have ever been before...a shame it ended as it did.

Meanwhile, on the surface, the girl who waited and the last centurion and sitting in their new home with their new son, with no idea that the man that left them behind is there that night, before he even knew who they were

That would be Dalek Jast, the quietest of the cult, and the most loyal to Dalek Sec. He probably saw the Doctor as a threat to his master.

I was just starting to like Dalek Sek, he was smart enough to realize that the old ways weren't working so he had a plan to make a new way. Mixing Dalek intelligence with human strengths was brilliant! Gross.....but brilliant. And in the end he saved the Doctor! He is the only likable Dalek. Edit: SO when I first made this comment I didn't expect it to get so much attention LOL. But I made the comment before I had finished the series so I was very biased. I will agree that Dalek Sek isn't the ONLY likable Dalek, but they remain my favorite.

A lot of people think he doesn't make sense (in terms of reasoning for becoming half human). But I'm sure the Dalek in Genesis of the Daleks said something along the lines of 'we are programmed to survive, we will adapt in any way necessary to ensure that survival' when they first rebelled against Davros. I liked him too, I wish he'd been given a bit more of a chance. He could have been a very interesting character. I still can't help but wonder what would've happened if he'd faced off against Davros in Journey's End.

Observer675 Davros would've called him a freak and claimed he had gone against what he had intended for the Dalek Race. Sec in turn would've said "Even like this, I'm more of a Dalek then you! You're just a blind crippled Kaled who wants to use us Daleks to take over the universe! Daleks tend to twitch their appendages when their fighting the urge to fight or run. You'll notice they only spasm like that when their around something they genuinely find threatening (I.E. the doctor)

+TheDreweMaster It was stupid because it made no sense. Why didn't the daleks just instantly destroy the human daleks once they started rebelling? Instead 2 more daleks died due to stupid writing. Tons of plot holes, and of course the *EMERGENCY TEMPORAL SHIFFFFT!* was just old at this point. The concept of an emotional dalek was great though.

I like to imagine an au where Sec could became a companion of some kind. He's one of the closest times a doctor felt humanity for a dalek. This clip doesn't a lot for Sec, but later on the episode.

I Like how Dalek Sec was reverting back to his ancestor Kaleds with his emotions being returned to him. Reminds me of Gharman and Ronson.

This episode was a very interesting concept. The Daleks were created from a humanoid species, what could happen if they manipulated themselves back into that form. I know many people don't like this story, but I thought it was great.

"Hello! Surprise! Boo! Etc!" I love that line, wish he would use it more often.

I personally think that Dalek Sec could've made a very interesting companion to the Doctor. Think about it: He came to the conclusion that the way the Daleks have life wasn't sustainable and he was eager to actually figure out how other life forms succeeded where the Daleks failed. Even if he didn't fully turn and become a loyal companion to the Doctor, eventually abandoning him in order to start his own, more benevolent race of Dalek(ish) beings, Dalek Sec travelling with the Doctor and Martha, for however long, would've been so intriguing to see. That... and I just really like his character. A once stalwart member of the Dalek race and leader of the group designed to think outside of that rather small sized box, deciding to start again with a modified version of his own race, flying in the face of all his own species stood for, for its own good. (Note: whether Dalek Sec may never have intended to make his new race of Daleks peaceful; possibly fully intending to have them as warlike as the original race. But the chance that he could see peace and discovery as the solution, rather than wanting supremacy and death, certainly seemed like it could've been what he was going for before he was killed).

The villains are always so polite with Ten, they let him have his little speech instead of just killing him on the spot

Such a pity no one thought to introduce Dalek Sec to one vital element, that's lead to mankind's survival over the years, besides its usual instincts; Diplomacy. For with diplomacy comes understanding. With understanding comes a focus. With a focus, comes things like compassion, as well as ambition, which also brings out a chance to realize the concept of empathy, and a possibility to find other solutions to settling dilemmas, other than warfare. Even ones that are ultimately more practical than warfare. And with that... It could bring a new purpose to Daleks as something, other than just a war machine with a primary, and virtually sole function for devistation of all who oppose them.

“PROTECT! PROTECT! PROTECT!” And also attac.

I stopped watching shortly after the winter break on Matt Smith's doctor. I've been meaning to catch up, but I don't really like watching TV by myself.

I loved this episode, and Dalek Sec is an incredibly underrated character. Don't at me.

That Dalek was in 2012 and yes they did say it was screaming when they found it 50 years ago but it was screaming because it was falling through time and it went insane according to the Doctor but even if it was in pain that's still 1962 and this is in 1930. And before you say that the cult of Skaro were in 2006 they were in the void ship and Eternity could pass them by at this very moment Dalek Sec is the first to feel this pain.

And very clever." - Often overlooked thing, imo, is how the Doctor is aware of just how brilliant the Daleks actually are and sort of respects it even though he hates how they use that brilliance (at least when they're forced to cause "Ex-Ter-Min-ATE!" doesn't work).

You know, warlike Humans DO share some similarities to Daleks in terms of mindset but hey, the Daleks evolved from the humanlike Kaleds who themselves are a lot like warlike humans so it's only natural that Sec would find Humans to be somewhat like Daleks.

***** And there's also more to the Daleks then being warlike and genocidal. Each Dalek is selfless and is willing to do anything to ensure the survival and triumph of the Dalek race, even die or beg for mercy. Also, they're highly intelligent, resourceful and adaptable which is why they keep coming back from the edge of extinction. While representing the worst of ourselves, they also represent the best of ourselves at times. Even if they're mutated creatures in travel machines, are super intelligent, logic based, hate filled and genocidal, they're in some ways a lot like Humans.

@@girlgarde and there were times when they truly brought out the best of humanity in them. Like here, where Dalek Sec turned himself into a human... something never thought of by other Daleks. Or Rusty. Where the 12th Doctor turned Rusty from a Dalek that hated others to a Dalek that hated other Daleks. Which, now that I think about it, is funny because some of The Doctor's best friends are his enemies or the same species as one of his enemies. Like Strax and Vastra. Or even, The Master.

It looks like he has a mini-Beholder stuck on a humanoid body.

This episode was a historical moment in Dalek history for so many reasons. First of all Dalek feelings. Questioning Davros and how he created the Daleks. And the last of the time lords being faced with the last of the Daleks as they were so close to being wiped out.

The worst part is they could have done so many neat things here. The idea of a dalek becoming human and in the process realizing what has been lost with emotion.

Me when someone asks me the main antagonists of doctor who:

the human dalek is probably one of my favourite creatures in the franchise, it’s really fascinating

People give this story such a hard time. It was doctor who at its finest, right down to the cheap practical yet impressively made prosthetic.

"Ohoho that must've roasted up your power cells" and there's the answer to everyone's question about this episode, why are the Daleks hiding from 1930s humanity? Simple their plot shields aren't working which means they would eventually be taken down by the military (or hell without those shields they can easily be taken down by TorchWood)

Reminder, they were in New York, during the era of the Great Depression. I doubt WW2 era weapons can pierce Dalekium alloy. It was their SHIP that ran out of power, not the Dalek's themselves.

That and even if human weapons couldn't do too much The fact is that they are only 4 And depending on how much power they have, they may not be able to keep using those gunsticks of theirs And the plungers are more a desperate move for if they have no power But exposes then if they are out numbered The odds are stacked aganist them to a degree, the most they have to keep the numbers up are their Pig Slaves But they are clearly not meant for much

@@Jarock316 What ship? The Cult of Skaro time-jumped without a ship. I think you're confusing 'Evolution of the Daleks' with 'Victory of the Daleks'

You can see the Doctor visibly testing the Dalek-human hybrid here to decide whether or not it can be spared safely.

You would think a Dalek-Human hybrid would essentially be a Kaled.

I HAVE SOMETHING TO SUGGEST MY IDEA TO BE USED IN SPINOFF SERIES INVOLVES HYBRID-DALEK: Now I can imagine for a storyline that one of the Daleks secretly collected a sample of the HYBRID-DALEK DNA before he had escaped from being destroyed by (The Doctor) in Manhattan in the year1930, and I imagine the reason why is because he had genuine respect for the Dalek who had made himself the first Human-DALEK hybrid, and to add I imagine that he secretly had genuine guilt about what he participated in doing to his fellow comrade, I also can imagine he could of as well felt genuine guilt in not speaking up about his thoughts on how their comrade was being treated, and I can imagine that the Dalek has no more anger towards his comrade who had become a HYBRID that had betrayed the him, and the rest of the DALEKS to save the planet: EARTH, to help humanity, and to add even work with their most hated enemy (The Doctor) & also to add I can imagine at some point the Dalek had come to the understanding to why the HYBRID choose to do what he had did, and that includes risking his own existence to save the lives of those who are DALEKS. To add I can imagine that this particular DALEK had decided after traveling for a long time to find a place to settle down on, and make it his home to try to coexist with any life-forms that might exist on it, and to add to start making plans on trying to perfect the HYBRID creation process so that no one has to be sacrificed in order for a HYBRID to be formed, and also to add try to figure out some way to make himself a HYBRID as well so that a new type of version of DALEKS can come into existence. In addition I can imagine that the brand new species might call themselves (The HYBRIDS RACE) & it is because they are a combination of DALEK DNA, and of DNA from alien beings that expresses genuine emotions; That goes for humans from planet: EARTH, and all other types of alien beings species as well. Plus to add I should mention that I imagine that this brand new species would be completely separate from the regular known evil conquering DALEKS, and so I imagine they would never a-line themselves with the evil DALEKS, and to add would never aline themselves with any other evil conquering alien species neither, and yet I can imagine that this brand new species wouldn’t mind alining themselves with (The Doctor) & also to add they wouldn’t mind alining themselves with (The Doctor’s) instant daughter JENNY neither, and it is because they genuinely respect them both, along with they genuinely want to become friends with them.

This clip right here was the first thing I ever saw of Doctor Who. And I'm glad I saw it so long ago.

One of my favorite Dalek episodes. Really wish they kept on the idea of a Human Dalek, just be nice to have a change to the Dalek's in future too.

We never see this old style of dalek anymore, just standing around the doctor

How The Doctor manages to get people to not shoot at him before he starts talking to them and then distracts them from the fact that they were trying to shoot him long enough to create a diversion to then escape again will never cease to amaze me.

The song played on the radio is such a JAM

You gotta admit, human dalek Sec’s actor was actually really good

IMO such an underrated two parter

Notice how the Doctor doesn’t raise his voice until Sec starts talking bad about his favorite species

I personally wish we had a good dalek storyline. Like what if there were ones that weren’t conditioned to hate?

You mean, if the dalek actors had a say in the plot of the episode they were featured in? I could imagine a collab where the cult of skaro and the doctor work together to defeat a common enemy. Just make some super strong enemy like Thanos or Ultron. Then they could go back to fighting after that, of course, for the sake of continuity.

I like when dalek sec says humanity, he looks away like he's ashamed.

this is probably the closest thing to the mythological Hybrid (Dalek - Time Lord hybrid that is)

I always thought Sec was the stepping stone towards a rebirth of the Daleks into the Kaleds

So "report status" is the dalek equivalent of "dude, you alright?"

I like it when he said “then it’s just noise”!

Honestly, his assessment of humanity isnt wrong. Our only limitation in our capacity to wage war is our technology. Humans have a warrior spirit that only the Daleks can match. Even when faced with superior enemies, who have superior resources and numbers and technology, we still fight. And fight the will to win. We fight with a level of vigor that can only be experienced in battle. It's to the point that throughout history, there have been great mercenaries and soldiers alike who became ADDICTED TO WAR! The feeling of victory and conquest. And when faced with destruction, even our most meager and peaceful citizens will take up arms and fight with the will of a mythical creature.

this is actually the first episode of Doctor Who that I watched that was aired on Disney XD ( For some reason) and it scared the crap out of me

Daleks Sec the first Dalek to feel, well once they stopped being Kaleds. I wish he hadn't been killed off. I feel like there was a lot of potential with Dalek Sec

I would say this is more a reversion than anything... It would have been brilliant if they had referenced their original forms, the kaleds, as that is what dalek sec could've represented... A return to form after centuries of perversion by davroses toys

That "I think it does" is amazing when you consider the Daleks don't have individual thoughts, until now.

I’m glad RTD is back in the writing chair with Gatwa as the leading role

I both love, and am appalled by, the fact that Sec was birthed with a suit and dress shoes.
