Quite contrary it felt like it was the happiest moment in the series. From the get-go it was established Kaori had a short amount of time to live, and even that time would be hard. Even if the operation was successful it was just buying her time. If a person's death can't be changed then all you can wish for is the living to move on. The fact that Arami manages to do that with his ability to play the piano would have been a bittersweet ending as it is. But the letter allows Kaori to tell her feelings, say goodbye and gives Closure all while the other characters and their bonds strengthen and move on to a hopeful future.

I've never really understood the criticism of YLiA being melodramatic, every action, every decision the characters always make all feel like they come from a place of genuine understanding. I've seen a rising number of people criticise it's comedic timing (which is fair) but I can never get aboard it being overly dramatic. This video reminds me about what makes the show so stellar and I feel it's pretty needed. Great video and congrats on 100k! :D

as you say, I don't think its necessarily a satisfying critique to attack it for being melodramatic or overly dramatic, I was a big fan of your lie in april for a long time being one of my favourites. Now there is a video out on youtube somewhere that I watched a long time ago, sorry for not having a link and from there the person was critiquing your lie in aprils slap stick comedy contrasted with the violent trauma the main character is supposed to have after her moms strict coaching of her son. This violent trauma doesn't sit well when all of his female friends always act violently towards him for different reasons and that it doesn't really add up that he wouldn't feel like he wasn't ok when that happens, while the comedic part is obviously played off as something that's not serious, i still came to agree after listening to the video for a while. It was a hard pill to swallow as it was my favourite anime for years, but I agreed with what he was saying

@@bansmoth i think it has to do with misunderstandings and the teenage love drama and how it's often used in shoujo works, mostly just to add tension to the plot, but a lot of the time actually using it twist and kind of unfairly change a characters emotions and desires, it basically makes a lot of the meaningful stuff the characters do feel worthless because they're basically not really doing it with true intentions, just kind of unknowingly doing it and it isn't so much a reflection of the characters true desires as it is just solely plot device to write the story. It's obviously different here as it's truly based around the misunderstanding, which is actually a meaningful plot device, It's totally intentional, extremely understandable and by the time the full reveal comes any frustration is washed away. Though i still do think it was played up a bit much, mostly because i think the proper romance melodrama has points that were a bit unnecessary and tacked on, to get more people to like it, due it being common and liked in a lot of other popular shoujo romances but that truly does not take away from the actual meaning and brilliant parts of the show,(To be clear i'm a big fan of shoujo stuff, even ones that does have some of super drama that in it, but it's easy to mess it up a bit and the fitting amount for it is different in different stories ). it just sometimes makes some of the more inconsequential quirks of the show frustrating to watch, even though it's purpose is ironically the opposite, to add entertainment value. Not the drama in general itself or even a lot of the teenage romance shenanigans, just some of it that seemed to just pull at the string a bit too hard for the comparatively benign trouble that it was. It's some terrific writing to be able to do that but maybe a bit mishandled and overdone.

I'll be honest, anime like this scare me. Not because they are literally frightening but because they make me face things I try so hard to suppress and that is painful. I used to be very emotional as a child, and it was the cause of a lot of bullying. Anything someone did got a reaction that I literally could not stop. It made me an easy target. Eventually I became muted and found it difficult to have strong reactions to anything, I think you have expressed the same. I've been seeing a voice acting coach for a couple years now and have hit a wall recently that has left me frustrated. Whenever things get hard I have a habit of running away emotionally and mentally. I'm so thankful for her because even when I don't believe in myself I know she believes in me and it helps me push forward. I know this is all over the place but maybe it's time I do the same thing with the anime I have been avoiding as a start to help me regain some emotions I haven't been able to express. More than sadness and anger i'd like to feel hope and happiness again. I'm going to keep working on my craft for my goals and I know you will too. Just as art inspires from Your Lie in April your videos are just as much inspirational art to me. Keep pushing through your walls so that you gradually won't need to hide in public, showing your face is a great step as you've said that is a big hurdle for you. I'm rooting for you and will do my best too!

Agreed. I too used to cry a lot, and used to be cross eyed, I tried everything I could to make friends but looking back, it just didn’t click sometimes, often the “cool kids” would outshine me, and you know kids. I still remember one day I was crying when my class returned from the park, and a chaperone said I wasn’t actually sad, just crying for attention. Imagine a kid who’s known for being a crybaby crying for attention, I honestly don’t know why she’d ever say that knowing her job. Over time, I grew quieter and quieter, until completely silent. Fast forward to middle school where puberty begins and you start to look at the girls differently, and when I first started watching anime. My first one was Sword Art Online, and I enjoyed it for its concept of a death game. A place where your skill of the game mattered most, maybe I could’ve been Kirito and have more confidence myself. Then, enter Asuna, also a strong character but in the middle of the aincrad arc, something about her changed. Instead of being the strong and sometimes stubborn personality, she’s more intimate, she fights less, and seems weaker than what she used to be. She began to love Kirito but I never realized that. For the most part, it was the same story for all others. Your Name? Didn’t she’d a tear Silent Voice? Ranted about the stupidity of the suicide scene Toradora? Hated Taiga and her blue haired counterpart (don’t remember the name, sorry) I wish I could say, your lie in April changed something in me because it focused on music, and me being a musician meant something. But no, it was one of my firsts, long before the listed three above. So, in a way, I might get you. But unfortunately, I’m 18 and I still don’t have a good understanding about what love can do to a person.

What was really cool about re-watching Your Lie in April: there are little details ALL OVER the piece. Now this is kinda SPOILER stuff, so be sure to finish the show before reading this. . . . . . . . . The seasons and their colors have symbolic value. When we begin, Kousei's world is trapped in winter, colorless and bleak. In his first encounter with Kaori, his world begins to take on color, the cherry blossoms- in particular- drive this image home: of beautiful rebirth. The seasons cycle through, Kaori collapses for the first time as spring ends and summer's heat sets in. Yet, despite the colors being duller in summer, she comes out to shine once again-- as the beautiful red and yellow leaves of autumn begin to fall; yet, the beauty of those leaves are imbued with a deep melancholy-- the understanding that they are dazzling, yet falling to their deaths. When the winter bears down on Kousei, despite the overwhelming snow piling up all around outside-- inside his mind, Kaori appears below a cherry blossom in their "final" performance together. At the very end. Spring begins again, and life continues-- Kousei's seasons will continue to come and pass. As the cherry blossoms fall this time, Kousei's eyes are filled with color. The attention to detail of this piece is breathtaking. Beyond the changing of seasons, there is the train that noisily zooms past through the show-- reminding us that life waits for no one: There are even details in the comparisons that could be drawn between Kaori and Kousei's mother in their hospital stays... AND most importantly, the stray black cat mirroring Kaori. That one is sprinkled all over the place if you're looking for it, but what you probably don't realize-- is from the very beginning, Kaori tracks down the black cat to feed it her favorite snack-- a Canele. Anyway, those were just some of the details I noticed, I'm sure there are TONS more! What are some details you guys loved from the show?

To know I'm not the only one that was moved. I don't remember Kaori and her anime with sadness, I remember her with a smile, with peace, because even if it's just fiction, fantasy, the impact Kaori did on me and many people was real. Thank you Kaori, Kousei's heart is not the only one where you'll be living, there's an endless amount out there. One of the profound take aways I got from your lie in April was the portrayal of Arima’s mother that physically and emotionally abused him ‘for his own betterment’. Yet later on we also see the soft, loving side of her in Arima’s bright, vivid memories. Her characterization hit close to home bc just like real ppl, she was deeply flawed but not solely defined by them but by her own sense of humanity. This video was beautifully poetic and quite appreciated, great work hiding.

Your Lie in April was my first anime. It made me cry, and at the time I called it "a heartbreakingly sad show", because it was, and is. I was obsessed with this show, looking up and listening to this OST so much that I could recognize "Watashi no Uso" and "Again" at the very first few notes. Yet still, my resolve to call it the most powerful sad anime was cracked after multiple other giants like Violet Evergarden, AnoHana, and Koe no Katachi (all of which I STRONGLY recommend), which even after I tried to save some face by differentiating kinds of sad, still got pushed out of most heartwarming, most singularly painful death moment, and most singularly painful healing moment by the other shows. And so, a resolution I had to watch Your Lie in April again this April (I'm pretty relatively new to anime) crumbled. It was just... no longer the saddest anime I'd ever seen, and I couldn't even remember why I'd liked it so much in the first place. I thought, "Was it really just nostalgia that hit really fast?" over and over, cued every time I thought of this show, and didn't want to watch the show to answer myself. However, you've provided a video I can't help but call eye opening. I finally see why Your Lie has its place, even among other shows that (arguably) hit deeper sometimes. It's not the most heartwarming or the most sad all in one moment or one episode or in one set of episodes. It's a sad, yet uplifting story, a whole story, a story that travels the full path of despair and healing and shows its audience that there is life beyond depression so bleak it feels like death, that it is possible to want to live again, and it can prove it. Your Lie takes the time to complete itself, and while it's not like I can't argue that about the other shows I mentioned, I actually can't argue that this show doesn't deserve to be called whole. I've actually been on a bit of a slump lately in anime to watch, because I burned through a lot of quality shows early. Maybe it's time to return to the beginning of my life as an anime fan, eh?

Your Lie in April was actually the first anime series I ever saw (yes, a rather unusual starter anime) and that's why it'll always have a special place in my heart. I don't think any piece of media has affected me as deeply as the final episode did. I wrote a goddamn fanfic to process my feelings, lol. The second ED song remains one of the two anime songs to make me cry just from listening to them (the other being Shin Sekai Yori's second ED). God I love this series

Kaori's love was hidden all through..... She used frndship to bring back kosei. Kosei on the other hand crushes on kaori but never showed up. So kaori's efforts were pretty much successful. After kosei recovered kaori took her exit. It basically symbolizes that kaori came in his life to bring him back. ❤

As a photographer, musician, and currently a university instructor teaching media production and communication design, one of the things that I teach and practice is the power of the visualization that happens when a photographer captures a scene, edits it according to their vision, then prints it, and is made seen to an audience. Meaning changes hands and words between these vessels of reality. But, they do not just change, they also become more whole, as if snowballing to become an even larger message than the sum that each vessel can hold. The lessons that KimiUso taught to me, especially as I watched it exactly on April (when my country went full-on lockdown due to the pandemic), was this: it's in the sincerity on how you play that makes music worth listening to. Indeed, there's no need to hide behind the podium when you're playing in public: you're in a sense, naked. And it is in presenting "naked" that true sincerity sparkles. After all, this lack of inhibitions turned Kaori into the lovable girl who she is, was, and will be in our hearts and minds. This is what kept Tsubaki and Watari as spiritual siblings to Kousei, despite Watari having to play Kaori's game and Tsubaki ending up falling for her childhood friend. This is what brought Emi and Takeshi into the world of classical piano, after all: it was a Kousei, uninhibited by his mother's dying wish, who gave them light. This is what Kousei found in the end, despite losing his mom Saki, and then his love Kaori. And this lesson, alongside many others, helped me return to being a pianist of sorts, and overcome the loneliness that this pandemic brought to the world. Again!

I adore YLIA, it gets me every time because it's a story very close to my own experience in a lot of ways. I had a dear friend, someone I loved, who was born with an illness that ultimately ended his life far, far too soon. Kaori reminds me a lot of my friend. Like her, he was bright, and vibrant, he loved life and wanted to experience as much of it as he could. His passing broke something in me to where I was almost incapable of sharing the unbeatable optimism, I no-longer believed that everything would work out, I no-longer believed that any happiness I managed to find would last. Things that were connected to him in my mind grew too emotional, too painful to touch with a 10 foot pole. I couldn't bear to watch baseball for example, a sport he loved almost as much as Kaori loved music. Eventually I found my way through and was able to rediscover what made my friend so special, and learned to carry that with me.

Dont know, never was able to get into 3-gatsu, mainly because of shaft epilepsy inducing head-turns, weird close ups and the likes, also, asking your audience to learn and even more important, understand shogi is a pretty huge expectation, YliP was wiser in this regard, and chose music for its analogy, you dont have to understand music for you to feel it. Also, YliP is a finished story, while 3-gatsu is still ongoing, thus leaves holes

@@HelloOnepiece Yeah, but you don't need to get Shogi at any level to understand the series. I even watched Sangatsu a couple of times and never got that part, but still is my favorite series. But I understand why some people get turned off by this. Also, season 1&2 closes the main arcs and could be considered as a complete story. If you want to give it a try, you could just ignore the shogi matches and you'll miss almost nothing. But I know it's not an ideal way to watch a series, tbh. I'll give it a try to your lie in April because I like what you told about using music as a medium. I'll agree that's a better way to get some feelings across PS: What's that about Shaft epilepsy? I don't remember anything like that showing up.

@@lucasgomez4656 Shaft (studio) gained this moniker in my country, mostly thanks to the monogatari series, but they still do it in their other, on a lesser level though. They use many many close ups shots, so the camera, and the angle is changing really fast, but not trough fluid animation, but through cuts. Annoyingly the many times they do this when it comes to monologues too , not just fast pacing comedic scenes. And in general i dont like their close up shots, like why is the camera focusing, on random objects/places on the face, during a simply dialogue, its not like they add much to the scene, or meaning, its just distracting, and also costs more. I liked oregairu S2 more in this regard, where the animators spiced up the dialogue with minor gestures, all the while showing us the faces, like in a normal dialogue

As a sad college kid and causal pianist, I've seen a *lot* of anime, and not many have had that impact and deepened my appreciation for music, friendship, and even life as YLIA has. Same but for me I think for me I think Kaori should've been less generic?? Like the basic cheery girl, (?) Idk think that's the reason why I clutched on Tsubaki in the first ep, I don't hate her tho, just not best girl for me if you know what I mean

I appreciate you touching the idea that art is both the way we express ourselves yet limited to restrictions in the world. Its an interesting duality, to think that we need something open ended to express ourselves, yet have to have rules so it can be understood. It's a concept I can't say I've thought too hard about until now."i know, this is like an ad or whatever" top tier line. "i hope to see you all soon, in person next time" 100k hype.

I'm so glad someone talked about the more abstract and hidden tones of your lie in april. This is my favorite anime of all time and I've seen about every major and average anime out there. I rewatch your lie every year and every time it moves me beyond words and helps me look forward to the future. With every watch I find someone new and it's impact never fades. Love the videos

I was so excited when I saw the thumbnail, this is my favorite anime I think. Not only for the amazing story that had me crying at the end. But also because it pushed me to finally pick up an instrument. I’ve watched your videos for a long time and I’ve commented many times as well. I have a job now and I don’t have much time to consistently watch these videos. But whenever I do it’s always something special. So thank you, thank you for making your punpun video which is one of my favorites as I’ve stated in the past. And thank you for making this one which is something I will love later on as well.

KZread just suggested your channel and I’m so freaking grateful about it. I’ve been watching anime for not more then 3 years now and I’m so passionate. So seeing the way that you talk about them, all the lessons that you took, how you apply on your life experiences... is so incredible and inspiring. You made me love anime even more. Thank u! You deserve all the success in the world! (I’m Brazilian, so apologies for any mistakes with my English haha)
